Its current owners have brought in some 21st century renovations. The kitchen is almost futuristic complete with a wine cooler, a gas cooktop stove and marble and granite countertops. But the spacious house still retains the charm put there by its original owner, Capt. William Haffards. Haffards served in the navy during the Civil War and is remembered for grand gestures of kindness, such as voyaging across the sea to Ireland during the potato famine to deliver a ship 38 N. Main St., South Yarmouth MADELEINE LIST/CAPE COD TIMES full of corn. He was also deeply red walls and white floor boards. involved in the local community, The floor boards are endearingly and made large donation to the Methodist Meeting House. This house on North Main that he had built between 1852 -1858 was another contribution to the community. The lower level is a string of large rooms with 8 -foot ceilings, each painted a different rich color. Its spaciousness and style allure you to host a party, and you can almost imagine guests mingling with champagne glasses in their hands. The colorful walls are accented by tall, floor -to -ceiling windows made with 19th century glass that bend the sunlight as it comes through. At the opposite end of the house, the first floor culminates in a cozy front parlor room with deep uneven with varying widths, a sign of the times — builders then had to use whatever slabs of wood were available and couldn't be choosy. Upstairs the bedrooms are small and painted all white. Particularly charming are the gothic -style windows that look like they were plucked off the walls of a Victorian church. Haffords died in 1881 after spending about 30 years in the home. For the next 125 years the house remained in his family until it was bought by current owners. Now, the big house, with many more features to discover, is ready for the next phase of its history. — Follow Madeleine List on Twitter at: @madeleine list. About this house LOCATION: 38 N.
