All structural work shall be coordinated with the architectural design plans and shall conform to the following governing standards: A) The Massachusetts State Building Code, sixth edition, and all other agencies having jurisdiction. B) ACI "Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete." (ACI 318-02) C) The Code for Welding in Building Construction by the American Welding Society (AWS D1.1) D) AISI Specification for the design of Cold Formed Steel Structural Members. E) The Timber Construction Manual, 4th edition, American Institute of Timber Construction. F) The National Design Specification for Wood Construction, latest edition. 2. All construction is to conform to the Massachusetts State Building Code and all applicable product and design standards. Absence of specific items from these drawings does not infer that the Contractor is relieved from the statutory code requirements. 3. All materials and methods of construction shall conform to the approved rules and standards for materials, tests, and requirements of accepted engineering practice as listed in Appendix A of the Massachusetts State Building Code. 4. The Contractor shall verify all dimensions and conditions in the field prior to commencing work. Any discrepancy between what is shown on the drawing and actual field conditions shall be reported back to the engineer before proceeding with any work. 5. Design Vertical Live Loads: Attic Floor Load - 20 psf Floor Load (Sleeping Rooms) - 30 psf First Floor Load (Not Sleeping Rooms) - 40 psf Exterior Deck Load - 60 psf Snow Load - 25 psf 6. Design Lateral Loads: - Wind Load: Zone - 3; Exposure - C Reference Wind Pressure - 21 psf FOUNDATIONS 1. Assume maximum safe soil bearing pressure - 4,000 psf. 2. All footings are to be placed on natural undisturbed material or compacted granular fill. Subsoil bearing strata shall be free from all vegetation, loam and organic material. 3. All footings shall be placed on a 4" layer of crushed stone compacted to 95% Standard Proctor Density. 4. Slabs on grade shall bear on natural undisturbed soil or on controlled compacted fill. Remove existing fill material where necessary and replace with clean granular fill compacted in 6"-8" layers to obtain 95% standard proctor density at the optimum moisture content. CONCRETE 1. Concrete mixture, form -work, delivery and placement shall conform to all requirements of ACI 301 (latest edition), unless otherwise noted. 2. Concrete materials shall be: Type 1 or 2 Portland cement, sand and gravel aggregates. Concrete shall be air -entrained per ACI recommendations. Concrete compressive strength, (f'c) in 28 days, when tested in accordance with ACI 318-02, shall be as follows: All concrete work - 4,000 psi 3. All mixing, transporting, placing and curing of concrete shall be done in accordance with the recommendations c: the American Concrete Institute, 4. Reinforcing steel shall be deformed bars conforming to ASTM A615, grade 60, except where noted. No. 3 bars may conform to ASTM A615, Grade 40. All reinforcing bars welded to a steel section should be of welding grade 40. 5. Welded Wire Fabric (WWF) shall conform to ASTM A185 with a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi. 6. Reinforcing steel shall be placed to provide the following minimum concrete cover (see section 7.7 ACI 318-02 for conditions as noted): Footings - 3" Slab on Grade - 1" top Grade Beam - 14" top, 3" bottom Piers - 2" 7. Sill plate anchors to be ASTM A307 bolts embedded into top of concrete foundation wall at maximum spacing of 4' on center, unless noted otherwise. Anchors shall have minimum embedment of 8" into concrete and shall have 90' hook unless noted otherwise on plans. B. Column anchor bolts are to be furnished and installed according to design plan. All column anchor bolts shall be set by template. 9. All continuous reinforcement shall hove Class "B" splices (ACI 318-02, Section 12.15) unless noted otherwise. 10. All lap splices In WWF should be on mesh plus two Inches. FRAMING LUMBER 1. All framing lumber shall conform to the latest edition of the NFPA "National Design Specification for Wood Construction and supplement "Design Values for Wood Construction", latest edition. Maximum moisture content shall be 19X 2. All exposed wood members used for structural framing, decking, stairs, rails, bracing, etc. shall be pressure treated with ACO preservative, or approved equal, to minimum detention of 0.6 PCF in accordance with AWPA C3. 3. The framing lumber shall be of the following minimum grade and species for the specified use. All lumber shall be grade stamped by a recognized grading agency and shall be surface dry.
