After the stormy 66 -day ocean crossing in the cramped quarters of the Mayflower, the Pilgrims were pleased to drop anchor in what is now Provincetown harbor. However, an adequate water supply and defensible position quickly -con- vinced the Pilgrim leaders that Plymouth was the ideal location for their new settlement. Although the first years proved extremely trying for the Pilgrims, with many dying from exposure, pneumonia, dysen- tery, and possibly typhus, other settlers migrated from England to Plimoth Plantation which served to reinforce and expand the colonization of the New World. For more than two centuries Plymouth's principal oc- cupations were fishing and coastal shipping. It wasn't until the 19th century that true industries were established and they,in turn, drew the first non -British immigrants, all of whom have added to the unique flavor of the typical Plymouth character. Plymouth today retains the quaintness and charm of America as it was three and one-half centuries ago. The best way to see Plymouth is to visit its historic attractions-Plimoth Plantation, Mayflower II, and the many preserved or restored homes which serve as museums for priceless pieces of antique furniture and Pilgrim household articles. Of interest is the Plymouth National Wax Museum - America's only wax mu- seum devoted entirely to the Pilgrim story. Settled in 1656, named in honor of Elder Brewster, the town is locat- ed on the bay side of the Cape midway between Cape Cod Canal and Provincetown. There were approximately 115 known Brewster sea captains. Many saw service in the Civil War, and helped open trade in the Far East. Some were masters of ships at an age comparable today to a high school graduate. Some established chandleries, others fought Chinese pirates, organized the early steamship business in the Pacific, opened trade with South America, developed Oregon when it was still a wilderness, established sailing trade with the West Indies, carried the first American cargoes ever shipped to Hong Kong, and last but not least returning, as many did to Brewster in their retirement, to assume the responsibilities of town officers. The Library rl' has an extensive collection of books covering this period along with many paintings and models of ships. Fresh water bathing facilities as well as picnic areas, are available at the Roland Nickerson State Park located within the town. Ponds in the State Park are well stocked with fish. Small -mouth bass trout, pickerel, yellow perch and horn pout are native to these waters. White perch have been introduced and successfully established. Fly fishing from shore produces well. Trolling with outboard in the larger ponds is popular and productive. A few of the ponds provide boats for hire. Fishing at present in Brewster is principally for the sportsmen who know the channels and holes from which good catches of bass may be taken. Party boats take you deep sea fishing for tuna bass tautog and bluefish Tuna fishing is probably sport of p y the greatest p all, but bass fishing attracts the largest number of sportsmen and the beaches on both the bay and outer shore are popular bass haunts on weekends or holi. days. Party boats take you deep sea fishing for tuna bass tautog and bluefish Tuna fishing is probably sport of p y the greatest p all, but bass fishing attracts the largest number of sportsmen and the beaches on both the bay and outer shore are popular bass haunts on weekends or holi. days. The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is located on the north side of Rt. 6A near Stony Brook Bridge in West Brewster. Enjoy the nature trails, live exhibits and field trips. North of Harwich, near Pleasant Lake and Long Pond, are to be found vast areas of cranberry bogs. Chatham, one of the older townships on CapeCod, was settled in 1656, by a handful of Pilgrims, whose surnames still are prominent throughout the town. Originally a farming community, deep sea fishing was found to be ore lucrative. Covering an area of approximately twenty-five square miles, it is a combination of past and present - old fashioned and picturesque, yet with the best in modern facilities. V "`GA.%I lu.7 More than two hundred and sixty years ago, when the Nauset Indians still camped and fished along its shores, the parent settlement of Orleans was established, taking its original name of Nauset from the Indians. Some hundred years later the settlement, then known as Eastham, was di- vided by mutual consent. In 1797 the town was incorporated and named for the Duke of Orleans, later the King of France. Among the early industries were agriculture, shellfishing, salt - works and shipping. About 1820 there were fifty saltworks within the town, processing salt from seawater. Located on one of the most easterly points of land in the country, Orleans is a town with an area of about fourteen square miles. Not only is the town bordered on both sides by salt water, with the Atlantic Ocean on the east and Cape Cod Bay on the west, but it is deeply indented by a large body of water known as Pleasant Bay in the southern part of the town and the Town Cove in the norther part. Both these spots offer excellent boating and bathing opportunities, each possessing numerous town landings which are open to the public. In addition there are several fresh water lakes, nota- bly Crystal Lake and Pilgrim Lake, surrounded by pine woods, which are excellent for swimming and fishing. At Rock Harbor there stands a sign which commemorates the defiance of the Orleans citizenry during the War of 1812 against a British man -o -war. When its commander sent word that the town would be leveled by gunfire unless a large ransom was paid, the people refused to hand over a cent. A boatload of sailors then came ashore to change the stubborn Yankee minds. However, they never reached the shore before being driven back by the aroused men of the town, and the ship sailed away with no more money than it had upon arrival. Nauset Beach, now a lovely and favorite spot for swim- mers and sunbathers, is the only spot on American soil on which hostile shells fell during World War I. In 1918 a German submarine surfaced a short distance off the beach and with gunfire sunk several barges which were passing in tow of a tug, and then turned its fire upon the beach, A few shells fell harm- lessly upon the sands but itdoubtlesswas of great propaganda value to the Germans. ill Real Estate SALES a RENTALS 220 Main Street Phone 255-0091 Aft EAST ORLEANS 02643 There is a great variety of scenery, a wide choice of boating, fishing and bathing spots within the town. For evening entertainment there is a movie theatre, and the Orleans Arena theatre where excellent theatre -in -the -round has been produced. Pleasant walks may be enjoyed on lonely beaches, or on little sandy woodland roads that are well worth follow- ing for those who love nature in its quieter and more peaceful and remote moods. Eastham is the center of one of the most scenic sections of the Cape - from the beach dunes along the ocean surf, picturesque inlets and marshes, to attractive fresh water ponds inland and beaches on Cape Cod Bay. The Atlantic Ocean beach extends for miles with superb surf. Known as Nauset or the Great Beach, its broad sands invite leisurely strolls, swimming, and sun bathing. While Nauset Beach is ideal for all bathers at low tide, parents of the generally shallow- er children may prefer g y bathing available on the Bay shores at high tide, or in the clear, fresh water ponds. Fishing is. one of the most popular sports of summer visitors. During the summer the striped bass, king of salt water game fish in Cape Cod waters, is the chief source of fishing interest. Because of its unusual geographical assets Eastham's striper fishing is hard to beat. Surf casting along the tides at Nauset Beach attracts the experienced and the novice to the exhilarating thrill of trying to land one of the "big ones". Charter sport fishing boats are available to take you from Rock Harbor in search of stripers offshore in the Bay. Prize tourna- ments in nearby towns add to the excitement of the catch. Bluefish are caught in both surf and bay during season, Flounder, g tauto and a number of other good eating g fish make most any fishing trip from Eastham completely successful. The fresh water ponds of Eastham, well stocked with fish, offer the angler sport with rod and reel. Bass, pickerel, white and yellow perch and horn pout can be taken from these waters. The oldest Windmill on Cape Cod, built in 1793, is on Route 6 opposite the Town Hall -open June to mid-September. Wellfleet has managed to preserve the charm of the centuries in her homes and furnishings. The new highway by- passed the center of the village leaving all the older institutions intact. Visit the Wellfleet Historical Society to enjoy exhibits of yesteryear when Wellfleet was a thriving and bustling whaling port, due to the excellent harbor on Cape Cod Bay. An unusual point of interest in Wellfleet is the church clock which strikes ship's time, reflecting the nautical heritage of the village. Near South Wellfleet on the Atlantic Ocean coast, is the site of the first Marconi Wireless Station. The beaches in this area are fine for swimming and sunbathing, and the surf fishing is among the best. The Assembly Hall in the Marconi Area (formerly Camp Wellfleet) has an exhibit of the plant and animal life of the Cape Cod National Seashore. 2 walking tours through the National Seashore begin here. Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (Audubon Society) is located on the west side of Rt. 6 in South Wellfleet. Open daylight hours, all year. Nature walks and hiking trails. Near the tip of Cape Cod, just South of Provincetown, Truro offers good bathing at both ocean and bay beaches. Like so many other Cape Cod Towns, Truro was once a center of salt -making, and a famous bay fishing port. Historic Cape Cod Light (built in 1797), one of the most powerful lights on the East Coast, is situated on a high cliff facing the Atlantic Ocean. This is the first beacon picked up by ships traveling from Europe to Boston. Sixteen Pilgrims led by Miles Standish encamped on the shore near North Truro for the second night after they had landed on American soil, November 16, 1620. Here they were fortunate enough to discover water pure enough for drinking. After a perilous voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, the Mayflower cast anchor in Provincetown Harbor on November 20, 1620. Governor Bradford recorded it as a " ... harboure wherein an hundred saile of ships may safely ride." There is a marker at the west end of Commercial Street, marking the first landing of the Pilgrims. The Pilgrim Monument, an imposing 255 foot granite shaft is Provincetown's and America's greatest memorial to the Pilgrims. President Theodore Roosevelt laid the comer stone in 1907, and President William Howard Taft presided at the dedication ceremonies on August 5, 1910. Salting down the catch of the Grand Bank fishermen was a big Provincetown industry.
