RE: Bat Incident
Camp Wingate Kirkland, White RockRoad, Yarmouth
Inspector: Amy von Hone, R.S., Assistant Health Director
I received a call from Karl von Hone, Director of Natural Resources at 11:16 am. The
maintenance worker(older gentleman) at Camp Wingate Kirkland had captured a bat
located in one of the cabins. The bat was captured in a net, placed in the bed of the
maintenance worker's truck, and transported to Natural Resources Department. The
maintenance worker was asked several times by Director von Hone if he had any contact
with the bat. It was further expiained to him that if there was any type of exposure, the
bat would need to be euthanized and tested for rabies. The maintenance worker
reconfirmed that he did not touch the bat, and he often captures bats on the property and
releases them. He has been present when Natural Resources staff have captured ather
bats on the property and is aware of the issues of bats and rabies. He hrought the bat to
Natural Resources because he was told Natural Resources would want the bat, and not
because of any human exposure.
Director von Hone stated that the bat appeared lethargic, probably due to the cold
weather. He felt confident that the maintenance worker did not touch the bat based on
the conversation he had with him. Ue discussed the very low probability of a secondary
exposure from contact with saliva. Both the Director and I agreed that, based on the
conversation with the maintenance worker, the bat did not need to be tested for rabies.
