TECHNICIAL SPECIFICATIONS
1.) All wood dimension lumber shall be Southern Pine certified by the Southern Pine
Inspection Bureau as No. 2 or better grade, smooth four sides (S4S) and shall be
treated as recommended by the AWPA for salt water contact. limber sizes are nominal
dimensions. Either full size (mill rough cut) or nominal size (S4S) timber may be used for
the top wales.
2.) Hardware, rods, and steel products shall consist of structural steel shapes meetingg
ASTM A36, bolts meeting ASTM A307 and Nuts meeting ASTM A 563, Grade C3 or DH3, all
galvanized in accordance with ASTM A153 with 2 oz. of zinc per square foot. Alternate
grades of nuts may be used if approved by the Engineer. Dock washers (3"0), standard
washers and ogee washers shall be installed as indicated on the plans and galvanized
as indicated above. Washers shall be used on both ends and on lag bolts with the
exception of carriage bolts where washers are requried on the threaded end only.
Carriage bolts shall be installed with round end on wood wale side only. All exposed steel
shall be covered with a coating of bitumostic sealer.
3.) Emergency environmental controls shall be available on-site for immediate use by
the Contractor in the event of an oil spill or other potential contamination event.
4.) Filter fabric shall be a strong woven geotextile drainage fabric such as Jennian
woven monofilament GTF-400EO or equal. Contractor shall provide a submittal of
the fabric proposed for use for review by the Engineer. Fabric shall be installed and
and anchored by stone with excess provided for stone settlement.
5. Vinyl Sheet Piling shall be manufactured with an interlocking feature that ensures
adjacent panels maintain alignment. Sheeting shall be homogeneous, uniform in color, free
of cracks and defects. The color provided unless directed otherwise shall be "Clay".
Manufacturer shall certify that the selected produce meets industry standards for Vinyl
Sheet Piling. Design is based on sheeting with a minimum Section Modulus of 16.9 in 3/Ft.
with on allowable design stress of 3,200 PSI.
6.) Composite Recycled Plastic Deck Lumber for the sheeting cap shall be installed
as recommended by the manufacturer using fasteners approved for such installation.
The recycled lumber shall be 5/4" thick x 6" wide provided in a woodland brown color
unless an alternate color is selected by the owner. Confirmation of color desired
must be made before ordering this product.
7.) Anchor Piles shall be treated in accordance with AWPA recommendations and shall
meet ASTM D25 for Southern Yellow Pine units with a min. tip diameter of 6 inches.
8.) Drainage weep holes shall be provided at Elevation 4.8 placed at 8' o.c. along the
entire length of the wall. Stone backfill (1CF) shall be provided around each drain
location with a geotextile fabric encapsulating the stone.
9.) The elevations shown on this plan ore based on Mean Low Water (MLW) = 0.00 as
verified by field measurements of high water levels established on site on 4/17/08.
The mean tide for this site ranges from Elev. 0.00 (MLW) to Elev. 3.2 (MHW).
10.) Additional backfill soils shall be clean, granular Coarse to Medium Sand or Sandy Gravel
classified in the USCS system as GW. GP, SW, SP, SP -SM, SW -SM, GW -GM or GP -GM. Backfill
shall be placed in 10" layers to 95% of its maximum dry density as determined by in-situ
compaction testing. A typical suitable soil would be Mass Highway Gravel Borrow.
Excavated loam shall be stockpiled and reused for landscaping of the construction site.
11.) Crushed Stone shall meet Mass. Highway Standard Specifications (M2.01.1 or M2.01.4).
Stone for the wall base shall be max. 1-1/2". Stone for the drains and backfill max. 3/4".
12.) Deck slab concrete shall obtain 3000 psi at 28 days cure (Max. 3/4" aggregate) proportioned
in accordance with ACI -211.1 using a maximum water/cement ratio of 0.58. The slump of the mix
shall be maintained between 4" and 5" during placement.
13.) A chloride free mid-range water reducing admixture shall be included in the mix meeting
ASTM C-494 for Type "A" admixtures. Air content of the concrete shall be entrained between
4% to 69> A maximum of 15% of the cement shall be replaced with an approved Fly Ash.
The proposed mix design shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval at least 3 days in
advance of any concrete placement.
14.) Reinforcing steel shall meet consist of welded wire sheets of 6 x 6x W2.0 x W2.0 meeting
ASTM A-185. Sheets shall be supported on chairs or concrete brick at 2.5" off the base gravel.
