PHRAGMITES REMOVAL PROTOCOL
Billingsgate Land Management
DETERMINATION: A negative determination was given by the Yarmouth Conservation Commission for the
removal of invasive species on the property, including phragmites in the BVW adjacent to a salt marsh.
All Phragmites in proposed work area will first be re-evaluated. An integrated approach of mechanical and
chemical application will be performed on Phragmites according to the following schedule:
1) November 2014: Mowing, stalks mulched and/or removed. Provide Yarmouth Conservation Dept.
with monitoring and progress reports if requested.
2) Late Spring 2015: Mowing.
a. Mechanical removal (mowing), Late Spring 2015.
b. Continued mowing can be conducted by hand held brush saws and a low ground pressure
track loader an AS RC 60 with a ground pressure rating of 3.1 psi with a 60" rotary mower if
feasible. Use of rotary mower provides a more complete mulching of the existing and
previous years stalks. (Mechanical treatment may also include removal and proper
disposal of cut stalks).
3) Throughout growing season: Mowing and chemical treatments:
a. Phragmites may be re -cut as described above in July 2015 for vistas and to continue to
deplete its root reserves prior to chemical treatment. Mechanical removal contributes to
the success of the chemical foliar treatment.
b. After cutting, let the Phragmites in the project area regrow to an average height of 2', mid-
August, 2015. At this time the herbicide treatment of 1% Rodeo will be contact applied

using a hand centrelle4 48" wean •a'Rer which will be walked in a grid pattern across the
project area, or a backpack sprayer for increased flexibility. Let 2 weeks pass for chemicals
to take effect before recutting. Similar follow up cutting/chemical treatments may
continue through the end of the growing season.
4) Late October or November 2015. Final mowing, stalks mulched and/or removed. Provide Yarmouth j
Conservation Dept. with monitoring and progress reports if requested.
5) Spring 2016: Assess the success of eradication and repeat process if necessary with further
mechanical removal & spot applications.
All proposed herbicide treatments will be conducted by a licensed, trained and insured applicator, Keith
R. Johnson, License #35452. All herbicides in wetlands will be approved wetland formulations. Copy of
license and msds sheets are available on request.
