The Challenger Sports Code of Conduct and Practice
Introduction
1. Challenger Sports firrnly 6elieve ihat sport can be an.extremely positive ex�perience for
� children.I�Iot only does it coatribute to physical fitness,but also to social,moral,
emotional,and psycholvgical development of a child.Far tlais to take�pla.ce children need
�� to be guided by an info�ned,caring,lcnowledgeable coach who operates with tb.eir
realzns of lcaaowledge,skill,and a clear ethical:frameworl�.
2. In order to establish and maintain the highest possible standards it is important for all
coaches ta vvork within acceptable framework.Challenger Sports believe that the highest
standards of praatice and tha highest ethical standards shauld be inaintained at all tirnes
by Challenger coaches. . '

3. This Code of Conduct and Practice sets out the�ramewark for these high standards. It
identi�es the key responsibikities for coaches,establishes the core values to be pronnoted,
and identifies how ta protect children for whom coaches care for.
4. Coach.es who are e.mplayed by ChaUenger Spo�s are expected to compty with this code
and to#ake responsikiility far their actxons in relations to:themselves,cluldren,parents,
other coaches,Cla�llenger Sports,and the coaching profession.

Cliallengex Sports staff are expected to conform�to ethical standaxds in the areas of:
humanity,provision of claildren,co-operation,integrity,conftdentiality,abuse of pasition, .
pexsonal standards,sa�ety,and aompetence.

Challenger staff should respect the rrights and.self-worth of all htunan beings regardless of
age, gender,ethnic origin,cuitural background,religious or sexua�orientation.Everyone has
the right to be treated.both£airly and sensitivety.

• Challenger coaches must balance the cluld's perfarn�ance needs with their social,moral,
em,otional,and psychological needs

take responsibility for their perfoxmance and behavior in all aspecis o�life
3. Caaperation
• Coaches must work with any re�ated parties in ensuxing meeting the needs of the child.
This may be other coaehes,senior staff,parents,medics,socia�services,and the police

4. Integrity and ethics
• Coaches should encourage fair play and obeying the rules of the game within all training
and competi�ions .
e Coaches should never facilita#e im.proved performance through any nneasures which
interferes with the child's safety ox well-being .

5. Confidentiality
• Coaches must recognize that inevitably they wilt gather much pexsonal infarmation
regarding clvildxen. Such informat�an should be treated wi�ti respect and establish what
inforimation is coti�idential.Personal infoxmation should not be used to humiliate,
embarrass,Qr for personal gain.However,coaches must also recognize that ce�tain.
inforrnati�n:may need to be passed to a third party(e.g.chiid'protection issues)
6. Abuse of position . . �
- e Caaches who come izzto contaet with children in any farm must never abuse the status in
`/_ ` which ihey are held.They should never exert undue influenee on a child for any
personal gain or reward
7. Personal standards
• Coaclxes should set co�nsxstently high standards and partray a pasitive image of bath their - � �

• Coaches should be appropriately attired for coachin�,pubiic appearances
• Caaches should never smoke or drinlc in or around coaching venues
• Coaches should never arrive at a coaching session either smelling of alcohol or bei�ng -
unable to maintain high standards due to excessive alcohol co�nsumption
8. Safety �
• In their rale of`Loci Parentus'coaches shou�d endeavor to provide the safest possible
environmer�t for all ehildxe�n under fheir responsibility � �
• Coaches have a duty to protect children from avuse and harm(see Clvild Protection
Policy) .
• Coaches should check equipment,playing surfaces,and surrounding areas for hazards,
both real and potential
• Caaches should identify hazards to childxen under their supervisian and outline thezr
responsibility for their own.safety{e.g.removing jewe�ry,throvv�ng chewing gum away)

• Coaches shQuld prepare children for all practices,competitions,and ensure they axe not
put at risk 6y exposing them to conditions beyond their capabilities(e.g.playing an 8
year old against a 1S year old in a snnal.I sided ganne)
• Coaches who operate within this frarne of reference and who act without negligcnce will
be covered un,dex the insurance o�'Challenger Sports.Thase who are negligent and act

9. Competence
• All Challenger coaches xnust hold a recagnized qualification approved 6y the F'ootball
Assoaiation of England
� + Caaches should recognize their level of competence and not work beyond these '
� capabilities.
• Coaches should endeavor to keep themselves up to date with relevant training and staff
� development
� Coaches should welcome evaluatian and constructive criticism from those nominated to
do so •
10.Criminal conviction
• Coaches must infoxm Challenger Sports Directors of any criminal convictian,regardless
of whether the conviction occurred prior to or at an.y time during emplayment.This
condition exists for all Challenger employed staff including full-t�ne,part-time,paid,
vo�untary,and temporary sta.�f .
