SOUTH YARMOUTH - A
second -floor fire damaged two
unoccupied guest rooms at a
motor inn late yesterday morn-
ing.
The 57-room eastern wing
of the All Seasons Motor Inn
on Route 28 was unoccupied
at the time of the fire because
it was closed for renovations.
Construction workers at the
scene were not injured, saidYar-
mouth's acting fire chief, Robert
Kelleher. He estimated damage
at $150,000.
The fire, possibly sparked by
the renovation work, gutted the
two guest rooms and spread to
an attic space at about 11 a.m. It
took firefighters about 10 min-
utes to put out the flames, but
fire crews stayed at the motor
inn until 2:30 p.m. to make sure
the fire did not reignite.
Yarmouth Fire Department
officials believe a plumbing
torch ignited the fire at the
motor inn, which is located near
the Dennis town line.
The Hyannis and Dennis fire
departments sent help to the
scene. Yarmouth firefighters
cut a hole in the rear roof of the
eastern wing of the motor inn to
vent smoke and heat from the
building.

The property's western wing
and indoor lobby remained open
while firefighters worked on the
empty eastern wing. Firefighters
were quick to arrive because
of automatic fire alarms, fire
department officials said.
George Abbott, the property's
owner, said the response to the
fire was excellent. "Everything
worked perfectly,"he said of the
building's alarm system and the
quick arrival of fire crews.
Renovations to the eastern
wing of the motor inn began
about two weeks ago, with plans
to reopen in May.
