RICH WITH HISTORY
By Ethan Genter

The Simpkins family is
one that goes far back into
Yarmouth history, when
Nicholas Simpkins was one
of the first settlers in the
area. One of his descendants,
Nathaniel Simpkins, founded
the Barnstable Journal, helped
startthe Yarmouth Regis-
ter, and was a member of the
House of Representatives.
This Queen Anne -style
mansion was erected after
Nathaniel's son John died
in 1870. The estate, known
The exterior may be similar to some other houses
on the Cape, but walking inside is like taking a step
into Downton Abbey
as "Sandyside," was fash-
ioned for John's wife and has
gone through some changes
through the years but has
retained its regal attitude.
The home takes a page out
of the Newport, Rhode Island,
mansions' book. It sits back
on a winding dirt road. Next
door is another lot that used
to be part of the estate. But
the property is still quite
large, adding up to just under
five and a half acres.
The front of the home
is perfectly symmetrical.
Hunter green trim blocks out
the windows on the shingle
front exterior wall. On either
side of the front door, bold-
ened by its Greek Revival
molding, are two first -floor
floor -to -ceiling windows.
The side yard boasts an
open deck that attaches to the
home's fenced -in back porch,
and looks out on the massive
grassy backyard. The exte-
rior maybe similar to some
other houses on the Cape, but
walking inside is like taking a
step into Downton Abbey.
One of the most interesting
parts of the home is pass-
ing between the rooms that
were used by the Simpkins
family, and those used by
the servants. In the parlors
the styling is elaborate. One
features deep maroon walls
paired with wood built-ins.
The other, which bumps out
onto the deck, has bright teal
walls with repeating gold

Marble fireplaces are found in room

for simple, sleek lines, this Victorian
is all about the details. Wide doorways
with decadent molding, are present
pretty much in every rooms' entrance
on the ground floor.
The vaulted ceilings make room for
massive pieces of furniture, which
would be nearly impossible to fit in
today's standard homes. Near the
formal dining room is a bureau that
stretches almost to the vaulted ceiling.
Inside its dozens of draws are seashells
from throughout the years. Undated
notes inside leave bits of history from
the owners past. One of the drawers is
lined with a Boston Evening Transcript,
dated Feb. 18,1881.
With all this decadence in the main
rooms, the parts of the home reserved
for the help, are decidedly humble.
The kitchen is modest, with butcher
block counters and built-in cabinets.
Here details fall by the wayside. These
rooms were meant to be worked in, not
savored. But it's still large and perfectly
functions as a space in which to make
grand meals worthy of the formal dining
room. Name tags in the servants quar-
ters coincide with what appears to be
a bell system, to notify them when the
family needed their assistance.
This home isn't just for anyone. It
would be awfully big for a couple, with
its five bedrooms spread over nearly
5,700 square feet. These types of estates
need upkeep, but the history contained
