MURRAY Commonwealth of Massachusetts LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR Division of Professional Licensure DANIEL O'CONNELL SECRETARY OF HOUSING 239 Causeway Street • Boston • Massachusetts . 02114 AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT January 2, 2008 Dear Municipal Health Authority: DANIEL C. CRANE DIRECTOR, OFFICE OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS & BUSINESS REGULATION GEORGE K. WEBER DIRECTOR, DIVISION OF PROFESSIONAL LICENSURE Chapter 135 of the Acts of 2006 of the Massachusetts General Laws significantly altered governmental oversight of massage therapy. Municipalities no longer have direct oversight of massage therapists, massage facilities, or massage schools. However, local authorities do retain sole jurisdiction over some"body work" practitioners specifically excluded from the new law. The Board of Registation of Massage Therapy was not appointed until recently. Without a Board, regulations could not be promulgated, and the Division of Professional Licensure could not issue licenses or assume responsibility over inspection and enforcement. Without a viable alternative, municipalites have continued oversight despite a nebulous legal situation. Regulations are now promulgated and individual applications are being accepted. Business and school application procedures will be announced at a later date. This means that municipalities should stop issuing licenses to massage therapists. However, files or other historical documents should be retained since one method of obtaining a Commonwealth license will be to demonstrate the issuance of a municipal license. If possible, DPL would like an electronic copy of your license files. We will use this for verification and to generate a mailing list of prospective applicants. Additionally, the Board would like to know about any "problematic" license holders in your jurisdiction. Links to the rules and regulations, applications, and other public information will be on the Board's web site www.mass.gov/dpl/boards/mt. For applicants and other general users, there is an "Email -the -Board" link on the website. However, please feel free to contact me directly with any questions or to transmit data, my direct line is (617) 727-5369; my email is stgphen.j .nemmers(a,state.ma.us. (http://balanceflow.com/wp- content/uploads/2014/08/santasabina.jpg) Asian bodywork uses gentle hand and finger pressure along the body's energy channels. The objective is to restore and balance the flow of energy throughout the body. There are many forms of Asian bodywork, some well known (Shiatsu), some obscure (Seiki Soho). What they have in common is their foundation in Chinese Medicine. They differ in their use of specific techniques to balance energy. Below you'll find brief descriptions of styles that I have practiced. (Please note that I am not currently seeing new clients.) The links in each description take you to a longer article with more detail. Acupressure In Acupressure (http://balanceflow.com/baacupressure/) therapy, the practitioner uses a variety of tools (pulse and tongue diagnosis, questioning, looking, listening) to assess the relative strength of the twelve organ meridians. She then addresses specific physical complaints and their corresponding energy imbalances by working on individual energy channels. An acupressure treatment is very relaxing and eases you into a healing, meditative state. Tui Na In a Tui Na (http://balanceflow.com/tuina/) session, the practitioner uses standard Chinese Medicine assessment skills, but also uses extensive hands-on touch to locate areas of the body that are out of balance. Imbalances are addressed using soft tissue massage, joint moMT¢ation, and gentle pressure on energy points. This is a fairly active form of Asian bodywork — the practitioner remains in motion during the session and there is always something new happening. If you like conventional Swedish massage, you will undoubtedly enjoy Tui Na. It leaves you feeling both relaxed and invigorated. (See also What Is Tui Na? (http://balanceflow.convlk tuina/)) Jin Shin Jyutsu Jin Shin Jyutsu (http://balanceflow.com/bajinshinjyutsu/) is a highly developed form of acupressure therapy. Due to its gentleness and effectiveness, it is increasingly used in hospitals and outpatient settings as a complement to conventional healing methods. My sense of the practitioners I've met is that many have recovered from serious health conditions. They were inspired to become practitioners after experiencing the benefits of Jin Shin Jyutsu.
