Review: You'll find huge portions and good prices at Mike's
The roast beef sandwich was worthy of my attention. The beef was warm, pink, tender and sliced paper thin — and there was plenty of it.
If you're looking for fast food that is also freshly made with good quality ingredients, Mike's Roast Beef & Pizzeria is
the place to go. My husband and I went there for lunch after church on Sunday. Our experience wasn't perfect, but the
highlights made it worthwhile.
The setup is that you order at the counter and go sit down in the utilitarian dining room. When your food is ready, an
employee calls your number and delivers your food on a cafeteria -style tray. The menu is huge and listed on a board
over the counter. My best advice is to grab a take-out menu and peruse it instead of ordering off the board because the
take-out menu has detailed descriptions of the food.
If my husband had done that, he would have known the wings come plain, Buffalo or teriyaki. He ordered six ($6.95)
expecting Buffalo wings and instead got plain wings. Service was very friendly, but the person behind the counter
should have offered him all the options. The wings were battered and fried, which isn't his favorite treatment of wings.

Even the small size servings at Mike's are huge, so we inadvertently ordered way too much food. I wanted to try one of
Mike's signature roast beef sandwiches, which come in five sizes. There is a junior roast beef, a regular size, a "super beef' and an eight- or to -inch roast beef
sub. The regular ($5.99) seemed like a good bet, and it would have been if I hadn't also ordered a "mini" souvlaki salad ($5) and a small order of steak fries
($1.95)•
There was nothing mini or small about the salad or fries, making me wonder what the larger versions looked like. As it turned out, I ate the entire roast beef
sandwich and about four steak fries and brought the salad and remaining fries home. The roast beef sandwich was worthy of my attention. The beef was warm,
pink, tender and sliced paper thin — and there was plenty of it.
There are a variety of toppings for every sandwich and I chose horseradish, lettuce, tomato and onion. It came on a sesame seed bun. My only criticism of the
sandwich is that the beef was seriously under -seasoned. It took an entire packet of salt to bring it up to flavor.
Steak fries are pretty hearty and need to be cooked long enough to make the outside extra crispy or they are just too much potato without any payoff. My steak
fries were undercooked and unseasoned.
My husband ordered the pastrami bomb ($6.95). I'm pretty sure this is a sub that only a man would love. Even one bite was much too greasy for me, but he ate
the whole thing. It consisted of diced and grilled pastrami and salami with sauteed peppers, onions and button mushrooms and was topped with melted
American cheese. The grilled sub roll was a bit soggy from all the ingredients. The word "bomb" when referring to a sandwich is a cautionary word indicating a
messy meal.
After lunch we had a busy day of errands, work and new puppy care. We planned on cooking dinner, but suddenly it was 7 p.m. and neither of us had the
energy to do so. Our leftovers were turned into an easy and surprisingly wonderful dinner.
The salads at Mike's come with a large homemade pita. It was hands -down the best pits. I have ever tasted. I tossed the salad of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes,
cucumbers, red pepper, shredded carrots, shaved red cabbage and red onions, feta cheese and olives with the house Greek dressing.
There is no way to describe my joy at the plentiful pieces of marinated grilled pork tenderloin on the souvlaki salad. They reminded me of spiedies, my favorite
food from my hometown of Binghamton, New York.
I stuffed the large pits with all the ingredients from the not -so -mini salad and tucked the pieces of gently re -warmed pork on top. I reheated the steak fries in
the toaster oven, along with the remaining three chicken wings.
Our visit to Mike's provided two meals for just $32.26, which seemed like a pretty good bargain. The prices at Mike's are incredibly reasonable for the portions
they serve. I would definitely go back My only conflict would be whether to order the roast beef sandwich or the souvlaki salad. Both were exceptional.
