Is there life left in the former nightclub headquar-
ters of Cape Cod — the Mill Hill Club on Route 28 in
Nest Yarmouth? night to
The board of selectmen agreed Tuesday
renew the alcohol license for the business — with one
condition. The license will not be issued.
For the past year the club has been opening one
day a week for a few hours to maintain its license, but
town officials are uncomfortable with that arrange-
ment.
Yarmouth Town Administrator Bob Lawton said
Henry Vara, owner of the Mill Hill, could b oten-
investi-
gating either a renovation of the property or a p
tial sale.
"He really wanted to keep this license. It's a busi
ness decision," said Lawton. "I think he beet lieves a n t
easier to transfer the license than to g
license."

Lawton said Vara
believes he is preserving
certain rights by maintain-
ing the license and that it
allows him more bargain-
ing power with a potential
buyer.
Vara is also working
with the town to resolve a
zoning issue with the
club's parking lot. The
problem is a matter of
commercial versus resi-
dential and where the line
is drawn.
"What he really needs
to do is write a letter to the
planning board," said
Lawton.
The board ultimately
renewed the license, but
the document will not be
issued to Vara; it will be
kept on file at Town Hall.
It was clear, however,
that this is not a free pass.
"We've been watching
[the Mill Hill Club] more
closely this year. Next
year at this time if there's
still no movement on the
property, there will be a
different outcome," said
Lawton.
