Based on the depth of the exit pipe below the top of the foundation, the high groundwater table, and the old plans that show the leach facility to be a pit, I feel that the bottom of the leach area would be far less than 5' above the adjusted maximum groundwater table, and that it would propably need to be rebuilt, including a pump. Therefore, I have advised my client that if he wishes to add two bedrooms on, it would be more economical to direct the flow from the bedrooms to the restaurant system, and eliminate some of the restaurant seats. Based on the original design plans of 08/07/81, revised 08/29/82, the capacity of the existing system is 1,224 gpd. (Minimum design was 34 seats X 35 gpd = 1,190 gpd.) The addition of two bedrooms @ 110 gpd per bedroom would add 220 gpd. This would reduce the available capacity of the restaurant to 1224 - 220 = 1,004 gpd. Therefore, the allowable number of seats would be 1,004 divided by 35 = 28 maximum. In conclusion my recommendation would be to not use the old septic system, but rather to reduce the seating occupancy to 28 seats for the restaurant and connect the two bedrooms to the recently reconstructed restaurant system.
