I had never been there, but she told me it was one of her in-laws' favorite places to eat breakfast. Curious, I checked out the menu on their web - site. The prices were fantastic and the choices were eclectic. When is the last time you saw a sloppy Joe or a fried baloney sandwich on a menu? Route 28 Diner 928 Route 28, South Yarmouth 508-398-2888, rt28diner.com Hours: 5:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. daily There is nothing my father loves more than a diner, so we decided to treat him to a meal there during his recent visit. He was thrilled. The diner is quite small - only 10 booths with a long breakfast counter. I suspect there is a wait- ing line in the summer, but we managed to snag the last available booth on our visit at noon on a Sunday. <` Tuesday -Thursday: $24.99 , x ° Twin Lobster Dinner Friday: $14.99 Seafood Fry -Choice of fried clams, scallops, shrimp, calamari or fish & chips f' Saturday: $19.99 Prime Rib Night r ,`.. Riverway Gift Cards Make The Perfect Gift! Route 28 Diner is retro all the way, including having some old classic dishes on the menu, such as deviled eggs and sloppy Joes. [LAURIE HIGGINS] The decor is fun. Antique model cars line shelves and some of the tables have a vinyl 45 record lacquered on top. Display cases with an ode to Batman, Elvis and a Lego display of the diner itself are tucked in back of the shiny aluminum counter. Old license plates line the wall above the counter. Black- boards offer a lot of extra specials in addition to the large menu. We started with a good cup of coffee ($1.98 each) and two orders of deviled eggs, with three half eggs per plate. The regular deviled eggs ($2.98) were extremely creamy with a nice kick of mustard. The special deviled eggs ($3.10) included mashed avocado and a piece of bacon on top. They disappeared quickly. My father ordered the sloppy Joe ($4.98). He loves them so much that his favor- ite diner at home actually calls him when they have them as a special. This one didn't disappoint. It was beefy and juicy and served on a soft bun. It came with Route 28 Diner makes outstand- ing deviled eggs in a comfortable, classic-50s setting. The special deviled eggs, shown here, include avocado and a piece of crisp bacon. [LAURIE HIGGINS] a bag of potato chips and a dill pickle spear. As far as we could tell, they don't serve French fries. I had a hard time deciding what to order, so I ended up ordering too much food. The two -egg omelet ($4.98) with cheddar, bacon, tomato and spinach (an additional $.98 each) was light and well -con- structed. The bacon was crisp and the fresh spinach was wilted just the way I like it. The side of diced home fries were par -boiled, well -sea- soned and fried to a delightful crispiness. Instead of toast, I ordered a short order of lemon poppy pancakes ($4.50). They were fluffy with a distinct lemon flavor that was lovely. They were also huge. I barely fin- ished one. From the specials black- board, my husband ordered eggs benedict with avocado and grilled radishes ($7.28). It was an odd combination, but he enjoyed it. The English muffins were grilled golden brown and the poached eggs were cooked perfectly. The Hollandaise sauce was light and fresh. Instead of home fries, he ordered home -fried cauliflower (an additional $1.25). Small bits of seasoned cauliflower were sauteed on the grill until golden. Service was excellent and friendly. Even though it was our first visit, we felt right at home. The Route 28 Diner more than exceeded our expectations. It's easy to see why it would be anyone's favorite place for breakfast or lunch. We will definitely go back.
