HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019 May 19 - Cape Cod Times Article: "The Hillock offers serenity along 6A"REAL ESTATE CAPE HOUSE HUNT `The Hiflock'oners serenity along 6A By Marina Davalos Contributing writer YARMOUTH PORT— What do custom-built plantation shutters, a custom head- board shower stall (indoors) and a ceiling fresco have in common? We're not sure if it's a real fresco, as that term implies painting on fresh plas- ter, but it is a ceiling painting nonetheless — playfully painted to look old:-- where the chandelier hangs in the dining room. The sellers of this home have put in a variety of artful touches such as these, and yes, you did read correctly — plan- tation shutters in the living room and upstairs are custom made. The upstairs bath- room is a special space, large enough for a sitting area and an extra bonus: the claw-foot bathtub has been enclosed by beadboard, with its own little door — a private sanctuary. The Greek Revival -style home was built in 1835 by Capt. Thomas Ryder, and is part of the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth's Captain's Mile, a walking tour of some 60 private homes. The histori- cal society says Ryder was a member of the Boston Marine Society, which is the oldest association of sea captains in the world, according to its website, having been estab- lished in 1742. With the house being situated on a hill, it is interesting to note that the stone staircase leading up to the front door is inscribed with the words "The Hillock." The property features a sizeable manicured yard, with lighted side gardens. A sepa- rate converted shed is a perfect man cave or she shed; a free- standing two -car garage has a huge storage loft. Enter the main home through the front side porch and into the beautifully updated kitchen, with granite countertops, stainless steel gas stove and hidden refrig- erator. A copper farm sink is a unique upscale touch, and a bathroom off the kitchen leads outside to.a walkway where you'll find a unique outdoor shower area. The kitchen leads into the frescoed formal dining room, which boasts a wood -burning fireplace. The living room with its custom plantation shutters, has a large fireplace as well. The upstairs has a nice flow, and built- ins in the bedrooms include shelves, drawers and even a jewelry armoire. No detail has gone unnoticed in this home. You even have hurricane -force shutters that block out the chatter of the outside world. — Marina Davalos is a free- lance writer who lives in Cotuit. Follow her on Twitter at @Marina Davalosl.
