RE: 915A Rt. 6A, Yarmouthport, MA Barnstable County Mutual Insurance
Dear Chairman,
The office administrator suggested we submit an exemption form for the proposed work. The proposed work
involves removing existing Kousa Dogwoods that have been in the ground approximately 7 years and they are
failing. They are failing due to their sensitivity to poor drainage and resulting disease. Our plan calls to replace
them with a hardy species of Flowering Pear. See attached arborist report on the Dogwoods.
In the replanting we will organize the trees in a more pleasing manner, rather than be planted haphazardly. At
maturity, the canopy to Rt. 6A will be much improved with the Pears over Dogwoods. We have planned to
replace one Dogwood with a Dogwood by the front door.
Best regards,
(ef,

PROPERTY LOCATION: 912 Main St Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts
ASSIGNMENT: Evaluate the health and condition of the dogwoods located at the front of the
property.
PLANT HEALTH CARE (PHC) OBSERVATIONS:
The dogwoods are showing signs of weak incremental growth. Dogwoods grown in full sun
often grow extremely slowly to defend against the hot conditions. Dogwoods prefer a partially
shaded site and dogwoods are native to these shade locations.
Also evident is the very heavy, poorly drained soil. Dogwood prefers a well drained, cool,
loamy soil for optimum growth.
Probing the soil revealed that the small hair roots that are responsible for picking up water and
nutrients were low in population.

This site is not ideal for dogwood growth. These is evident from the poor root and shoot
growth these trees are providing. Although these trees are "existing"at this site they will never
thrive here as the site conditions will not allow for this.
I observed a photo of a dogwood that fell over at this site and there were no signs of healthy
root growth.
A better long term solution for this site would be to remove the dogwoods and replant with a
species better suited for the sun and soil conditions that exist here.

Attempting to maintain these trees at this site will likely involve chemical intervention in
attempt to maintain these trees existence. Removal and replacement is the best way to avoid the
need for regular chemical treatments.
Please call if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Co.
