MONITORING REPORT -ANNUAL
December 14, 2020
Project Address: 10 Marsh Point
DEP File No: 83-2224
Date of Issuance: March 13, 2020
Time Period: April 2020 - December 2020
Report #: 1 (2020)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The proposed project at 10 Marsh Point includes 7,115 square feet of vegetation management to remove
invasive phragmites (Phragmites australis) and any additional non-native, invasive, and aggressive plant
species from the Bordering Vegetated Wetland (BVW). No planting was proposed as removal of the invasive and
non-native plant species will release the existing native seed bank to revegetate the project area.
ACTIVITIES TO DATE:
Spring - Fall 2020:
• Initial hand cutting of the phragmites and treatment of the invasives in the BVW and associated upland
areas was completed in May.
• Initial treatment of the phragmites occurred in July and follow-up treatment of phragmites occurred in
August and October.
RESTORATION CONDITIONS:
During a site visit on December 11th, the project area was monitored for response of the targeted invasive plant
species following the first season of management, and the recolonization of the native species. No dormant
phragmites stalks were observed within the salt marsh vegetation at the time of the site visit. The remaining
treated dead stalks of phramites will began to break down, providing additional nutrients for the recolonization
of native plant species during the 2021 growing season. Grey willow, one of the targeted non-native species,
was not observed. The existing cedars at the edge of the management area were in very good health, as was the
groundsel bush along the edge of the marsh.
2021 ANTICIPATED ACTIVITIES:
• Conduct follow-up treatment of invasive, non-native and aggressive plants as necessary to control the
targeted species
