To whom it may concern,
I have been asked to provide my professional opinion as to the current and future
health and safety concerns of the large Silver Maple. The tree is located in the
southwest corner of the lnn. Just above the great lawn on the lower of two
terraces. You can't miss it.
As I review the current condition, there is an immediate safety concern. A large
split branch, which occurred in the recent past still capa ble of , and likely to come
down. This is of concern to outdoor customers and possible damage to the lnn,
itself.
The evidence of internal decay can be easily seen by all who view the tree.
Numerous open decay areas and bark cankering from trunk to crown is obvious.
To that point, there is evidence of animal bark scaring up and down the base of
the maple, likely raccoons using the tree cavities and hollows as a den currently.
You also see water sprouts/sucker branching, known as epicormics branching.
This is a further indicator and evidence of tree stress and decline.
Healthy tree bark should be straight and uniform in pattern, from ground to
crown, with little bark differentiation. This is not the case here. When we tap on
and around the trunk to judge how sound the trunk is. We hear tone variations,
noting levels of internal wood decay and health. There is considerable heart rot,
which has impacted the tree for many years, resulting in the conditions we view
today.
There is a cable from a utility pole across 64 to the Maple. Along with what
seems to be other electrical wiring. I have no idea what's going on (grounding??)
here, other than to say - that's wrong !!
The location of the Maple is a bit precarious, having grown to this size on rather a
small and narrow terrace. Surface roots damage is evident and lend to future
disease entry and tree decline. This surface rooting is also of concern for
customers as a trip and fall hazard.

We don't have to think hard to realize the impact this tree may have, if it comes
down. Both tree health and perhaps more importantly root health, structure and
stability. Going forward we should all understand the risks and plan accordingly
going into the future.
That being said, this long lived Maple is currently considered to be a Hazard Tree.
The future of this old tree is not bright and the tree should be considered for
removal. Replacement plantings can be suggested, going forward if need be, I
suggest, review of the Barnstable county extension, tree recommendations for
the Cape in your selection process.
