CLEAR CONCRETE FLOOR SEALER
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section includes liquid floor treatments for concrete floors consisting of a clear, penetrating
liquid floor sealer.
B. Related Requirements:
1. Section 01 8113 “Sustainable Design Requirements” for general requirements and
procedures for compliance with certain USGBC LEED prerequisites and credits.
2. Section 03 3000 “Cast-In-Place Concrete” for concrete work including floor curing agents.
3. Section 03 3543 “Polished Concrete Finishing.”
4. Section 09 0007 “Painting” for paints and coatings.
1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Make Submittals in accordance with Section 01 3300 “Submittal Procedures.”
B. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include manufacturer's specifications,
surface preparation and application instructions, and protection and cleaning instructions.
Include data substantiating that materials are recommended by manufacturer for applications
indicated and for comply with requirements.
C. Sustainable Design Submittals:
1. Environmental Product Declaration (EPD): Provide manufacturers’ product
documentation for each product having an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
a. Documentation should confirm EPD conforms with ISO 14205 EN 15804 or ISO
21930.
b. EPD shall have at least Cradle to Gate scope.
c. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc2 information for each
product having an EPD.
2. Health Product Declaration (HPD): Provide manufacturers’ product documentation for
each product having a publically available material inventory down to at least 0.1 percent
or 1000 ppm.
a. Documentation should be in the form of one of the following:
1) A publically available inventory of all ingredients identified by name and
Chemical Abstract Service Registration Number (CASRN).
2) A published, complete Health Product Declaration in compliance with the
Health Product Declaration open Standard.

3) Material Health Certificate or Cradle to Cradle Certification under standard
version 3 or later with a Material Health Achievement level at the Bronze
level or higher.
4) A Declare product label indicating that all ingredients have been evaluated
and disclosed down to 1000 ppm.
5) Cradle to Cradle Material Health Certificate at the Bronze Level or higher.
b. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc2 information for each
product having an EPD.
3. Paints And Coatings: Provide manufacturers' or third-party certification of testing to and
compliance with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard method
v1.2-2017 that includes the following information:
a. The exposure scenario used to determine compliance.
b. The range of total VOCs after 14 days, measured as specified in the CDPH
Standard Method v1.2:
1) 0.5 mg/m^3 or less;
2) Between 0.5 and 5.0 mg/m^3; or
3) 5.0 mg/m^3 or more.
c. Laboratory accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025.
d. Claims of compliance for wet-applied products must state the amount applied in
mass per surface area.
e. Provide MSDS or other manufacturer documentation with disclosure of VOC
content for all wet-applied products.
f. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with IEQc2 information for
paints/coatings installed within the waterproofing membrane.
4. Flooring Systems: Provide manufacturers' or third-party certification of testing to and
compliance with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard method
v1.2-2017 that includes the following information:
a. The exposure scenario used to determine compliance.
b. The range of total VOCs after 14 days, measured as specified in the CDPH
Standard Method v1.2:
1) 0.5 mg/m^3 or less;
2) Between 0.5 and 5.0 mg/m^3; or
3) 5.0 mg/m^3 or more.

1.4 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS
A. Material Test Reports: Indicate and interpret test results for compliance of floor sealer with
requirements indicated.
1.5 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Weather and Substrate Conditions: Do not proceed with application of concrete floor sealer
under any of the following conditions, except with written instruction of manufacturer:
1. Ambient temperature is less than 40 degrees F.
2. Substrate is frozen or surface temperature is less than 40 degrees F.

1.6 WARRANTY
A. Special Warranty: Submit a written warranty, executed by the applicator and water repellent
manufacturer, covering materials and labor, agreeing to replace materials that fail to provide
waterproofing and dustproofing within the specified warranty period. Warranty does not include
deterioration or failure of coating due to failure of prepared and treated substrate, formation of
new joints and cracks in excess of 1/16 inch wide, fire, vandalism, or abuse by maintenance
equipment.
1. Warranty Period: 20 years from date of Substantial Completion.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 LEED REQUIREMENTS
A. Environmental Product Declaration (EPD): Provide products with Third Party Environmental
Product Declaration (EPD) whenever available.
B. Health Product Declaration (HPD): Provide products with publically available material
inventories whenever available.
C. Paints And Coatings: For field applications that are inside the weatherproofing membrane:
Paints and Coatings must be tested and determined compliant in accordance with California
Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2-2017, using the applicable
exposure scenario. The default scenario if the private office scenario.
1. All paints and coatings wet-applied on site must meet the applicable VOC limits of the
California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2007, Suggested Control Measure (SCM) for
Architectural Coatings, or the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD)
Rule 1113, effective February 5, 2016.
D. Flooring Systems: Flooring products must be tested and determined compliant in accordance
with California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2-2017, using the
applicable exposure scenario. The default scenario if the private office scenario.
2.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Provide clear concrete floor sealer with the following properties based on testing manufacturer's
standard products, according to test methods indicated, applied to substrates simulating Project
conditions using same materials and application methods to be used for Project.
1. Abrasion (Tabor Abrasion Test): Minimum 30 percent increase in abrasion resistance.
2. Hardening:
a. ASTM C42: Minimum 38 percent increase in comparative strength over untreated
concrete.
b. ASTM C805: Minimum 13 percent increased impact resistance.
2.3 LIQUID FLOOR TREATMENTS
A. Penetrating Liquid Floor Treatment: Clear, chemically reactive, waterborne solution of inorganic
silicate or siliconate materials and proprietary components; odorless; that penetrates, hardens,
and densifies concrete surfaces.
1. Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, products that may be incorporated
into the Work include, but are not limited to the following or equal:

a. Curecrete Distribution Inc.; Ashford Formula.
b. Dayton Superior Corporation; Day-Chem Sure Hard (J-17).
c. Euclid Chemical Company (The), an RPM company; Euco Diamond Hard.
d. L&M Construction Chemicals, Inc.; Seal Hard.
e. Meadows, W. R., Inc.; LIQUI-HARD.
f. Vexcon Chemicals, Inc.; Vexcon StarSeal PS Clear.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION
A. Clean concrete floor substrate of substances that might interfere with penetration or
performance of sealer.
1. Sweep areas to be treated with a fine bristle broom, or scrub, hose off with water and let
dry, to remove surface dust, dirt, and contamination.
2. Do not apply concrete sealer to puddled areas. Sealer must not be diluted before it is
able to penetrate the floor surface.
B. Protect adjoining work from spillage or blow-over of sealer.
3.2 LIQUID FLOOR TREATMENT APPLICATION
A. Comply with manufacturer’s instructions for application of floor sealer.
B. Penetrating Liquid Floor Treatment: Prepare, apply, and finish penetrating liquid floor treatment
according to manufacturer's written instructions.
1. Remove curing compounds, sealers, oil, dirt, laitance, and other contaminants and
complete surface repairs.
2. Do not apply to concrete that is less than 28 days' old.
3. Apply liquid until surface is saturated, scrubbing into surface until a gel forms; rewet; and
repeat brooming or scrubbing. Rinse with water; remove excess material until surface is
dry. Apply a second coat in a similar manner if surface is rough or porous.
3.3 CLEANING
A. Protective Coverings: Remove protective coverings from adjacent surfaces and other protected
areas.
B. Immediately clean floor sealer from adjoining surfaces and surfaces soiled or damaged by floor
sealer application as work progresses. Repair damage caused by floor sealer application.
Comply with manufacturer's written cleaning instructions.
