PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes:
1. Wall sheathing.
2. Parapet sheathing.
3. Combination subfloor-underlayment.

1. Section 01 3113.23 “Air Barrier System Coordination" for administrative and procedural
requirements for accomplishing an airtight building enclosure that controls infiltration or

1.3 PREINSTALLATION MEETINGS
A. Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site.
1. Review air-barrier and water-resistant glass-mat gypsum sheathing requirements and
installation, special details, transitions, mockups, air-leakage testing, protection, and work
scheduling that covers air-barrier and water-resistant glass-mat gypsum sheathing.
1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Make Submittals in accordance with Section 01 3300 “Submittal Procedures.”
B. Product Data: For each type of process and factory-fabricated product. Indicate component
materials and dimensions and include construction and application details.

1. Include data for wood-preservative treatment from chemical treatment manufacturer and
certification by treating plant that treated plywood complies with requirements. Indicate
type of preservative used and net amount of preservative retained.
2. Include data for fire-retardant treatment from chemical treatment manufacturer and
certification by treating plant that treated plywood complies with requirements. Include
physical properties of treated materials.
3. For fire-retardant treatments, include physical properties of treated plywood both before
and after exposure to elevated temperatures, based on testing by a qualified independent
testing agency according to ASTM D5516.
4. For products receiving waterborne treatment, include statement that moisture content of
treated materials was reduced to levels specified before shipment to Project site.
5. For air-barrier and water-resistant glass-mat gypsum sheathing, include manufacturer's
technical data and tested physical and performance properties of products.
C. Sustainable Design Submittals:
1. Environmental Product Declaration (EPD): Provide manufacturers’ product
documentation for each product having an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
a. Documentation should confirm EPD conforms with ISO 14205 EN 15804 or ISO
21930.
b. EPD shall have at least Cradle to Gate scope.
c. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc2 information for each
product having an EPD.
2. Certified Wood: Document FSC Certification for all wood products that contribute to
credit achievement by providing the following:
a. Itemized vendor invoices for FSC-certified products.
b. Chain-of-Custody (COC) certificates. Every entity that processes or trades FSC-
certified material before it is shipped to the project site must have FSC CoC
certification. On-site installers of FSC-certified products must have CoC
certification only if they modify the products off the project site.
c. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc3 Option 2 information
for wood products installed in the building.
3. Adhesives And Sealants: Provide manufacturers' or third-party certification of testing to
and compliance with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard
method v1.2-2017, that includes the following information:
a. The exposure scenario used to determine compliance.
b. The range of total VOCs after 14 days, measured as specified in the CDPH
Standard Method v1.2:
1) 0.5 mg/m^3 or less;
2) Between 0.5 and 5.0 mg/m^3; or
3) 5.0 mg/m^3 or more.
c. Laboratory accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025.
d. Claims of compliance for wet-applied products must state the amount applied in
mass per surface area.
e. Provide MSDS or other manufacturer documentation with disclosure of VOC
content for all wet-applied products.
f. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with IEQc2 information for
adhesives/sealants installed within the waterproofing membrane.
4. Flooring Systems: Provide manufacturers' or third-party certification of testing to and
compliance with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard method
v1.2-2017 that includes the following information:
a. The exposure scenario used to determine compliance.
b. The range of total VOCs after 14 days, measured as specified in the CDPH
Standard Method v1.2:
1) 0.5 mg/m^3 or less;

5. Composite Wood: Provide manufacturers’ product data confirming that the composite
wood products in the building have low formaldehyde emissions that meet the California
Air Resources Board ATCM for formaldehyde requirements for ultra-low-emitting
formaldehyde (ULEF) resins or no added formaldehyde resins.
a. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with IEQc2 information for
composite wood products installed within the waterproofing membrane.
1.5 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS
A. Evaluation Reports: For the following, from ICC-ES:
1. Wood-preservative-treated plywood.
2. Fire-retardant-treated plywood.
1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Mockups: Build mockups to set quality standards for materials and execution and for
preconstruction testing.
1. Provide sheathing for construction of the integrated exterior wall mockups specified in
Section 01 4339 “Mockups.”
a. Coordinate construction of mockups to permit inspection and testing of sheathing
before external insulation and cladding are installed.
2. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract
Documents contained in mockups unless Architect specifically approves such deviations
in writing.
B. Manufacturer Qualifications: A qualified manufacturer that is certified for chain of custody by an
FSC-accredited certification body.
1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Stack panels flat with spacers beneath and between each bundle to provide air circulation.
Protect sheathing from weather by covering with waterproof sheeting, securely anchored.
Provide for air circulation around stacks and under coverings.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 LEED REQUIREMENTS
A. Environmental Product Declaration (EPD): Provide products with Third Party Environmental
Product Declaration (EPD) whenever available.
B. Certified Wood: Wood products that are not reused, salvaged, or recycled must be certified to
the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council.

1. Provide products manufactured and extracted within 100 miles of the project site
whenever possible.
C. Adhesives And Sealants: For field applications that are inside the weatherproofing membrane:
Adhesives/sealants must be tested and determined compliant in accordance with California
Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2-2017, using the applicable
exposure scenario. The default scenario is the private office scenario.
1. All adhesives/sealants wet-applied on site must meet the applicable chemical content
requirements of SCAQMD Rule 1168, October 6, 2017, Adhesive and Sealant
Applications, as analyzed by the methods specified in Rule 1168. The provisions of
SCAQMD Rule 1168 do not apply to adhesives and sealants subject to state or federal
consumer product VOC regulations.
D. Flooring Systems: Flooring products must be tested and determined compliant in accordance
with California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2-2017, using the
applicable exposure scenario. The default scenario if the private office scenario.
E. Composite Wood: Composite wood, as defined by the California Air Resources Board, Airborne
Toxic Measure to Reduce Formaldehyde Emissions from Composite Wood Products
Regulation, must be documented to have low formaldehyde emissions that meet the California
Air Resources Board ATCM for formaldehyde requirements for ultra-low-emitting formaldehyde
(ULEF) resins or no added formaldehyde resins.
2.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Fire-Resistance Ratings: As tested according to ASTM E119; testing by a qualified testing
agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency.
1. Fire-Resistance Ratings: Indicated by design designations from UL's "Fire Resistance
Directory" or from the listings of another qualified testing agency.
2.3 WOOD PANEL PRODUCTS
A. Certified Wood: The following wood products shall be certified as "FSC Pure" or "FSC Mixed
Credit" according to FSC STD-01-00 and FSC STD-40-004.
1. Plywood.
B. Thickness: As needed to comply with requirements specified, but not less than thickness
indicated.
C. Factory mark panels to indicate compliance with applicable standard.
2.4 FIRE-RETARDANT-TREATED PLYWOOD
A. Where fire-retardant-treated materials are indicated, use materials complying with requirements
in this article that are acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction and with fire-test-response
characteristics specified as determined by testing identical products per test method indicated
by a qualified testing agency.
B. Fire-Retardant-Treated Plywood by Pressure Process: Products with a flame-spread index of
25 or less when tested according to ASTM E84, and with no evidence of significant progressive

combustion when the test is extended an additional 20 minutes, and with the flame front not
extending more than 10.5 feet beyond the centerline of the burners at any time during the test.
1. Use treatment that does not promote corrosion of metal fasteners.
2. Interior Type A: Treated materials shall have a moisture content of 28 percent or less
when tested according to ASTM D3201/D3201M at 92 percent relative humidity. Use
where exterior type is not indicated.
3. Design Value Adjustment Factors: Treated lumber plywood shall be tested according to
ASTM D5516 and design value adjustment factors shall be calculated according to
ASTM D6305. Span ratings after treatment shall be not less than span ratings specified.
C. Kiln-dry material after treatment to a maximum moisture content of 15 percent. Do not use
material that is warped or does not comply with requirements for untreated material.
D. Identify fire-retardant-treated plywood with appropriate classification marking of qualified testing
agency.
E. Application: Treat all plywood unless otherwise indicated.
2.5 WALL SHEATHING
A. Glass-Mat Gypsum Sheathing: ASTM C1177/C1177M.
1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering
products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to the
following or equal:
a. CertainTeed Corporation.
b. Continental Building Products, LLC.
c. Georgia-Pacific Gypsum LLC.
d. National Gypsum Company.
e. USG Corporation.
2. Type and Thickness: Type X, 5/8 inch thick.
2.6 PARAPET SHEATHING
A. Plywood Sheathing: DOC PS 1, Exterior sheathing.
1. Nominal Thickness: Not less than 1/2 inch.
2.7 SUBFLOORING AND UNDERLAYMENT
A. Plywood Combination Subfloor-Underlayment: DOC PS 1, Exterior, C-C Plugged single-floor
panels.
1. Nominal Thickness: Not less than 23/32 inch.
2. Edge Detail: Tongue and groove.
3. Surface Finish: Fully sanded face.
B. Plywood Subflooring: DOC PS 1, Exterior single-floor panels or sheathing.
1. Nominal Thickness: Not less than 23/32 inch.
C. Underlayment: Provide underlayment in nominal thicknesses indicated.
1. Plywood Underlayment for Tempered Hardboard Flooring: DOC PS 1, Exterior, C-C
Plugged, 1/2-inch nominal thickness.

2.8 FASTENERS
A. Provide fasteners of size and type indicated that comply with requirements specified in this
article for material and manufacture.
1. For wall sheathing, provide fasteners with organic-polymer or other corrosion-protective
coating having a salt-spray resistance of more than 800 hours according to ASTM B117.
B. Nails, Brads, and Staples: ASTM F1667.
C. Power-Driven Fasteners: Fastener systems with an evaluation report acceptable to authorities
having jurisdiction, based on ICC-ES AC70.
D. Screws for Fastening Sheathing to Wood Framing: ASTM C1002.
E. Screws for Fastening Wood Structural Panels to Cold-Formed Metal Framing: ASTM C954,
except with wafer heads and reamer wings, length as recommended by screw manufacturer for
material being fastened.
F. Screws for Fastening Gypsum Sheathing to Cold-Formed Metal Framing: Steel drill screws, in
length recommended by sheathing manufacturer for thickness of sheathing to be attached.
1. For steel framing less than 0.0329 inch thick, use screws that comply with ASTM C1002.
2. For steel framing from 0.033 to 0.112 inch thick, use screws that comply with
ASTM C954.
2.9 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS
A. Adhesives for Field Gluing Panels to Wood Framing: Formulation complying with APA AFG-01
that is approved for use with type of construction panel indicated by manufacturers of both
adhesives and panels.
1. Adhesive shall have a VOC content of 50 g/L or less.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION, GENERAL
A. Do not use materials with defects that impair quality of sheathing or pieces that are too small to
use with minimum number of joints or optimum joint arrangement. Arrange joints so that pieces
do not span between fewer than three support members.
B. Cut panels at penetrations, edges, and other obstructions of work; fit tightly against abutting
construction unless otherwise indicated.
C. Securely attach to substrate by fastening as indicated, complying with the following:
1. Table 2304.9.1, "Fastening Schedule," in the ICC's International Building Code.
2. ICC-ES evaluation report for fastener.
D. Select fasteners of size that will not fully penetrate members where opposite side will be
exposed to view or will receive finish materials. Make tight connections. Install fasteners
without splitting wood.

E. Coordinate wall sheathing installation with flashing and joint-sealant installation so these
materials are installed in sequence and manner that prevent exterior moisture from passing
through completed assembly.
F. Do not bridge building expansion joints; cut and space edges of panels to match spacing of
structural support elements.
G. Coordinate sheathing installation with installation of materials installed over sheathing so
sheathing is not exposed to precipitation or left exposed at end of the workday when rain is
forecast.
3.2 WOOD STRUCTURAL PANEL INSTALLATION
A. General: Comply with applicable recommendations in APA Form No. E30, "Engineered Wood
Construction Guide," for types of structural-use panels and applications indicated.
B. Fastening Methods: Fasten panels as indicated below:
1. Combination Subfloor-Underlayment:
a. Glue and nail to wood framing.
b. Screw to cold-formed metal framing.
c. Space panels 1/8 inch apart at edges and ends.
2. Subflooring:
a. Glue and nail to wood framing.
b. Screw to cold-formed metal framing.
c. Space panels 1/8 inch apart at edges and ends.
d. Install fasteners 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch from panel edges.
e. Space fasteners 6 inches on centers on supported edges (4-foot ends), and 12
inches on centers at intermediate support locations.
f. Penetrate wood framing members at least 1 inch.
3. Underlayment:
a. Nail to subflooring.
b. Space panels 1/32 inch apart at edges and ends.
c. Fill and sand edge joints of underlayment receiving resilient flooring immediately
before installing flooring.
3.3 GYPSUM SHEATHING INSTALLATION
A. Comply with GA-253 and with manufacturer's written instructions.
1. Fasten gypsum sheathing to cold-formed metal framing with screws.
2. Install panels with a 3/8-inch gap where non-load-bearing construction abuts structural
elements.
3. Install panels with a 1/4-inch gap where they abut masonry or similar materials that might
retain moisture, to prevent wicking.
B. Apply fasteners so heads bear tightly against face of sheathing, but do not cut into facing.
C. Vertical Installation: Install vertical edges centered over studs. Abut ends and edges with those
of adjacent panels. Attach at perimeter and within field of panel to each stud.
1. Space fasteners approximately 8 inches o.c. and set back a minimum of 3/8 inch from
edges and ends of panels.
