SECTION 08 3113
ACCESS DOORS AND FRAMES
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Products furnished, but not installed, under this Section include the following:
1. Access doors and frames installed in gypsum board construction.
2. Access doors and frames installed in masonry construction.
B. Related Requirements:
1. Section 01 8113 “Sustainable Design Requirements” for general requirements and
procedures for compliance with certain USGBC LEED prerequisites and credits.
2. Section 04 2000 “Unit Masonry" for installing access doors and frames in masonry.
3. Section 08 7100 “Door Hardware” for lock cylinders.
4. Section 09 2216 “Non-Structural Metal Framing" for framing openings for the installation
of access doors and frames in gypsum board partitions and ceilings.
5. Section 09 2900 “Gypsum Board" for installing access doors and frames in gypsum
board partitions and ceilings.
6. Division 21 Sections “Fire Protection" for funishing access doors and frames required for
access to fire protection work.
7. Division 22 Sections “Plumbing" for funishing access doors and frames required for
access to plumbing work.
8. Division 23 Sections "Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning" for heating and air-
conditioning duct access doors, and for funishing access doors and frames required for
access to HVAC work.
1.3 COORDINATION
A. Verification: Determine specific locations and sizes for access doors needed to gain access to
concealed plumbing, mechanical, or other concealed work, and indicate in the schedule
specified in "Informational Submittals" Article.
1. Size Variations: Obtain Architect's acceptance of manufacturer's standard-size units,
which may vary slightly from sizes indicated.
1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Make Submittals in accordance with Section 01 3300 “Submittal Procedures.”
B. Product Data: For each type of product.
1. Include construction details, fire ratings, materials, individual components and profiles,
and finishes.

C. Sustainable Design Submittals:
1. Recycled Content: Provide manufacturers’ product documentation that includes recycled
content claims for the products contributing towards compliance. Claims must conform to
the definition in ISO 14021-1999, Environmental Labels and Declarations, Self-Declared
Environmental Claims.
a. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc3 Option 2 information
for products with recycled content installed in the building.
D. Shop Drawings:
1. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work.
2. Detail fabrication and installation of access doors and frames for each type of substrate.
3. Ceiling Coordination Drawings: Reflected ceiling plans, drawn to scale, on which ceiling-
mounted items including access doors and frames, lighting fixtures, diffusers, grilles,
speakers, sprinklers, and special trim are shown and coordinated with each other.
E. Samples: For each door face material, at least 3 by 5 inches in size, in specified finish.
F. Product Schedule: Provide complete access door and frame schedule, including types,
locations, sizes, latching or locking provisions, and other data pertinent to installation.
G. Coordination: Determine specific locations and sizes for access doors needed to gain access to
concealed plumbing, mechanical, and other concealed work, and indicate in Product Schedule
and Shop Drawings.
1.5 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS
A. Qualification Data: For testing and inspecting agency.
1. Submit copy of DHI Fire and Egress Door Assembly Inspector (FDAI) certificate.
B. Field Quality-Control Reports: Submit field quality-control reports.
1.6 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS
A. Record Documents: For fire-rated doors, list of applicable room name and number in which
access door is located.
1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Fire-Rated Door Inspector Qualifications: Inspector for field quality control inspections of fire-
rated door assemblies shall meet the qualifications set forth in NFPA 80, section 5.2.3.1 and the
following:
1. Door and Hardware Institute Fire and Egress Door Assembly Inspector (FDAI)
certification.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering products that
may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to the following or equal:

B. Source Limitations: Obtain each type of access door and frame from single source from single
manufacturer.
2.2 LEED REQUIREMENTS
A. Recycled Content: Provide products with the maximum recycled content possible. Minimum
recycled content 20 percent.
2.3 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Fire-Rated Access Doors and Frames: Assemblies complying with NFPA 80 that are listed and
labeled by a qualified testing agency, for fire-protection and temperature-rise limit ratings
indicated, according to NFPA 252 or UL 10B.
1. NFPA 288 for fire-rated access door assemblies installed horizontally.
2.4 ACCESS DOORS AND FRAMES
A. Flush Access Doors with Exposed Flanges:
1. Assembly Description: Fabricate door to fit flush to frame. Provide manufacturer's
standard-width exposed flange, proportional to door size.
2. Locations: Masonry wall.
3. Metallic-Coated Steel Sheet for Door: Nominal 0.064 inch, 16 gage.
a. Finish: Factory prime.
4. Stainless-Steel Sheet for Door (where installed in Kitchen, Toilet Rooms, and other wet
locations): Nominal 0.062 inch, 16 gage.
a. Finish: No. 4.
5. Frame Material: Same material, thickness, and finish as door.
6. Hinges: Manufacturer's standard.
7. Hardware: Lock.
B. Flush Access Doors with Concealed Flanges:
1. Assembly Description: Fabricate door to fit flush to frame. Provide frame with gypsum
board beads for concealed flange installation.
2. Locations: Gypsum board wall and ceiling.
3. Metallic-Coated Steel Sheet for Door: Nominal 0.064 inch, 16 gage.
a. Finish: Factory prime.
4. Stainless-Steel Sheet for Door (where installed in Kitchen, Toilet Rooms, and other wet
locations): Nominal 0.062 inch, 16 gage.
a. Finish: No. 4.
5. Frame Material: Same material and thickness as door.

2.5 FIRE-RATED ACCESS DOORS AND FRAMES
A. Fire-Rated, Flush Access Doors with Exposed Flanges:
1. Assembly Description: Fabricate door to fit flush to frame, uninsulated. Provide self-
latching door with automatic closer and interior latch release. Provide manufacturer's
standard-width exposed flange, proportional to door size.
2. Locations: Wall.
3. Fire-Resistance Rating: Not less than that of adjacent construction.
4. Metallic-Coated Steel Sheet for Door (where installed in masonry): Nominal 0.040 inch,
20 gage.
a. Finish: Factory prime.
5. Stainless-Steel Sheet for Door (where installed in ceramic tile): Nominal 0.038 inch, 20
gage.
a. Finish: No. 4.
6. Frame Material: Same material, thickness, and finish as door.
7. Hinges: Manufacturer's standard.
8. Hardware: Lock.
B. Fire-Rated, Flush Access Doors with Concealed Flanges:
1. Assembly Description: Fabricate door to fit flush to frame, uninsulated. Provide self-
latching door with automatic closer and interior latch release. Provide frame with gypsum
board beads for concealed flange installation.
2. Locations: Gypsum board wall.
3. Fire-Resistance Rating: Not less than that of adjacent construction.

2.6 MATERIALS
A. Recycled Content of Steel Products: Postconsumer recycled content plus one-half of
preconsumer recycled content not less than 25 percent.
B. Steel Sheet: Uncoated or electrolytic zinc coated, ASTM A 879, with cold-rolled steel sheet
substrate complying with ASTM A 1008, Commercial Steel (CS), exposed.
C. Metallic-Coated Steel Sheet: ASTM A 653, Commercial Steel (CS), Type B; with minimum G60
or A60 metallic coating.
D. Stainless-Steel Sheet, Strip, Plate, and Flat Bars: ASTM A 666, Type 304. Remove tool and
die marks and stretch lines or blend into finish.
E. Frame Anchors: Same type as door face.
F. Inserts, Bolts, and Anchor Fasteners: Hot-dip galvanized steel according to ASTM A 153 or
ASTM F 2329.
2.7 FABRICATION
A. Provide access door and frame assemblies manufactured as integral units ready for installation.

B. Metal Surfaces: For metal surfaces exposed to view in the completed Work, provide materials
with smooth, flat surfaces without blemishes. Do not use materials with exposed pitting, seam
marks, roller marks, rolled trade names, or roughness.
C. Doors and Frames: Grind exposed welds smooth and flush with adjacent surfaces. Furnish
mounting holes, attachment devices and fasteners of type required to secure access doors to
types of supports indicated.
1. For concealed flanges with drywall bead, provide edge trim for gypsum panels securely
attached to perimeter of frames.
D. Latch and Lock Hardware:
1. Mortise Cylinder Preparation: Where indicated, prepare door panel to accept cylinder
specified in Section 08 7100 "Door Hardware."
2.8 FINISHES
A. Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal Products" for
recommendations for applying and designating finishes.
B. Protect mechanical finishes on exposed surfaces from damage by applying a strippable,
temporary protective covering before shipping.
C. Appearance of Finished Work: Noticeable variations in same piece are not acceptable.
Variations in appearance of adjoining components are acceptable if they are within the range of
approved Samples and are assembled or installed to minimize contrast.
D. Steel and Metallic-Coated-Steel Finishes:
1. Factory Prime: Apply manufacturer's standard, fast-curing, lead- and chromate-free,
universal primer immediately after surface preparation and pretreatment.
E. Stainless-Steel Finishes:
1. Surface Preparation: Remove tool and die marks and stretch lines, or blend into finish.
2. Polished Finishes: Grind and polish surfaces to produce uniform finish, free of cross
scratches.
a. Run grain of directional finishes with long dimension of each piece.
b. When polishing is completed, passivate and rinse surfaces. Remove embedded
foreign matter and leave surfaces chemically clean.
c. Directional Satin Finish: No. 4.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other
conditions affecting performance of the Work.
B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions for installing access doors and frames.

B. Set frames accurately in position and attach securely to supports with plane of face panels
aligned with adjacent finish surfaces.
C. Install doors flush and level with adjacent finish surfaces or recessed to receive finish material.
3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Inspection Agency: Engage a qualified inspector to perform inspections and to furnish reports
to Architect.
B. Inspections:
1. Fire-Rated Door Inspections: Inspect each fire-rated access door in accordance with
NFPA 80, section 5.2.
C. Repair or remove and replace installations where inspections indicate that they do not comply
with specified requirements.
D. Reinspect repaired or replaced installations to determine if replaced or repaired door assembly
installations comply with specified requirements.
E. Prepare and submit separate inspection report for each fire-rated access door indicating
compliance with each item listed in NFPA 80.
3.4 ADJUSTING
A. Adjust doors and hardware, after installation, for proper operation.
B. Remove and replace doors and frames that are warped, bowed, or otherwise damaged.
