WOOD FLOORING
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section includes field-finished wood flooring.
B. Related Requirements:
1. Section 01 8113 “Sustainable Design Requirements” for general requirements and
procedures for compliance with certain USGBC LEED prerequisites and credits.
2. Section 06 1600 "Sheathing” for subflooring.
3. Section 09 6421 “Tempered Hardboard Flooring” for tempered hardboard flooring and
resilient pads.
4. Section 09 6513 "Resilient Base and Accessories" for resilient wall base and accessories
installed with flooring.
5. Section 09 6516 "Resilient Sheet Flooring" for rubber sheet flooring (RBF-03).
6. Section 09 6566 “Resilient Athletic Flooring” for rubber floor tile (RBF-01).
7. Section 09 6466 "Wood Athletic Flooring" for wood resilient systems used in sports-
activity areas.
1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Make Submittals in accordance with Section 01 3300 “Submittal Procedures.”
B. Product Data: For each type of product.
C. Sustainable Design Submittals:
1. Environmental Product Declaration (EPD): Provide manufacturers’ product
documentation for each product having an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
a. Documentation should confirm EPD conforms with ISO 14205 EN 15804 or ISO
21930.
b. EPD shall have at least Cradle to Gate scope.
c. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc2 information for each
product having an EPD.
2. Recycled Content: Provide manufacturers’ product documentation that includes recycled
content claims for the products contributing towards compliance. Claims must conform to
the definition in ISO 14021-1999, Environmental Labels and Declarations, Self-Declared
Environmental Claims.
a. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc3 Option 2 information
for products with recycled content installed in the building.
3. Certified Wood: Document FSC Certification for all wood products that contribute to
credit achievement by providing the following:

a. Itemized vendor invoices for FSC-certified products.
b. Chain-of-Custody (COC) certificates. Every entity that processes or trades FSC-
certified material before it is shipped to the project site must have FSC CoC
certification. On-site installers of FSC-certified products must have CoC
certification only if they modify the products off the project site.
c. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc3 Option 2 information
for wood products installed in the building.
4. Adhesives And Sealants: Provide manufacturers' or third-party certification of testing to
and compliance with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard
method v1.2-2017, that includes the following information:
a. The exposure scenario used to determine compliance.
b. The range of total VOCs after 14 days, measured as specified in the CDPH
Standard Method v1.2:
1) 0.5 mg/m^3 or less;
2) Between 0.5 and 5.0 mg/m^3; or
3) 5.0 mg/m^3 or more.
c. Laboratory accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025.
d. Claims of compliance for wet-applied products must state the amount applied in
mass per surface area.
e. Provide MSDS or other manufacturer documentation with disclosure of VOC
content for all wet-applied products.
f. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with IEQc2 information for
adhesives/sealants installed within the waterproofing membrane.
5. Paints And Coatings: Provide manufacturers' or third-party certification of testing to and
compliance with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard method
v1.2-2017 that includes the following information:
a. The exposure scenario used to determine compliance.
b. The range of total VOCs after 14 days, measured as specified in the CDPH
Standard Method v1.2:
1) 0.5 mg/m^3 or less;
2) Between 0.5 and 5.0 mg/m^3; or
3) 5.0 mg/m^3 or more.

D. Shop Drawings: For each type of floor assembly and accessory. Include plans, sections, and
attachment details. Include expansion provisions and trim details.
E. Samples for Verification: For each type of wood flooring and accessory, with stain color and
finish required, approximately 12 inches long and of same thickness and material indicated for
the Work and showing the full range of normal color and texture variations expected.
1.4 MAINTENANCE MATERIAL SUBMITTALS
A. Furnish extra materials that match products installed and that are packaged with protective
covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents.
1. Wood Flooring: Equal to 1 percent of amount installed for each type, color, and finish of
wood flooring indicated.
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturer Qualifications: A qualified manufacturer that is certified for chain of custody by an
FSC-accredited certification body.
B. Vendor Qualifications: A vendor that is certified for chain of custody by an FSC-accredited
certification body.
C. Mockups: Build mockups to verify selections made under Sample submittals, to demonstrate
aesthetic effects, and to set quality standards for materials and execution.
1. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract
Documents contained in mockups unless Architect specifically approves such deviations
in writing.
2. Subject to compliance with requirements, approved mockups may become part of the
completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion.
1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Deliver wood flooring materials in unopened cartons or bundles.
B. Protect wood flooring from exposure to moisture. Do not deliver wood flooring until after
concrete, masonry, plaster, ceramic tile, and similar wet-work is complete and dry.
C. Store wood flooring materials in a dry, warm, ventilated, weathertight location.
1.7 FIELD CONDITIONS
A. Conditioning period begins not less than seven days before wood flooring installation, is
continuous through installation, and continues not less than seven days after wood flooring
installation.
1. Environmental Conditioning: Maintain ambient temperature between 65 and 75 deg F
and relative humidity planned for building occupants in spaces to receive wood flooring
during the conditioning period.
2. Wood Flooring Conditioning: Move wood flooring into spaces where it will be installed,
no later than the beginning of the conditioning period.

a. Do not install flooring until it adjusts to relative humidity of, and is at same
temperature as, space where it is to be installed.
b. Open sealed packages to allow wood flooring to acclimatize immediately on
moving flooring into spaces in which it will be installed.
B. After conditioning period, maintain relative humidity and ambient temperature planned for
building occupants.
C. Install factory-finished wood flooring after other finishing operations, including painting, have
been completed.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 LEED REQUIREMENTS
A. Environmental Product Declaration (EPD): Provide products with Third Party Environmental
Product Declaration (EPD) whenever available.
B. Recycled Content: Provide products with the maximum recycled content possible. Minimum
recycled content 20 percent.
C. Certified Wood: Wood products that are not reused, salvaged, or recycled must be certified to
the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council.
1. Provide products manufactured and extracted within 100 miles of the project site
whenever possible.
D. Adhesives And Sealants: For field applications that are inside the weatherproofing membrane:
Adhesives/sealants must be tested and determined compliant in accordance with California
Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2-2017, using the applicable
exposure scenario. The default scenario is the private office scenario.
1. All adhesives/sealants wet-applied on site must meet the applicable chemical content
requirements of SCAQMD Rule 1168, October 6, 2017, Adhesive and Sealant
Applications, as analyzed by the methods specified in Rule 1168. The provisions of
SCAQMD Rule 1168 do not apply to adhesives and sealants subject to state or federal
consumer product VOC regulations.
E. Paints And Coatings: For field applications that are inside the weatherproofing membrane:
Paints and Coatings must be tested and determined compliant in accordance with California
Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2-2017, using the applicable
exposure scenario. The default scenario if the private office scenario.
1. All paints and coatings wet-applied on site must meet the applicable VOC limits of the
California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2007, Suggested Control Measure (SCM) for
Architectural Coatings, or the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD)
Rule 1113, effective February 5, 2016.
F. Flooring Systems: Flooring products must be tested and determined compliant in accordance
with California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2-2017, using the
applicable exposure scenario. The default scenario if the private office scenario.
2.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Maple Flooring: Comply with applicable MFMA grading rules for species, grade, and cut.

1. Certification: Provide flooring that carries MFMA mark on each bundle or piece.
2.3 FIELD-FINISHED WOOD FLOORING
A. Solid-Wood Flooring: Kiln dried to 6 to 9 percent maximum moisture content, tongue and
groove and end matched, and with backs channeled.
1. Species and Grade: MFMA-RL First Grade hard maple.
2. Cut: Edge grain.
3. Thickness: 25/32 inch.
4. Face Width: 2-1/4 inches.
5. Lengths: Random-length strips complying with applicable grading rules.
B. Urethane Finish System: Complete water-based system of compatible components that is
recommended by finish manufacturer for application indicated.
1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering
products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the
following or equal:
a. Basic Coatings, Inc.
b. BonaKemi USA Inc.
c. Dura Seal, Sherwin-Williams Company (The).
d. Hillyard, Inc.
e. Polo-Plaz Coatings; National Coatings Company.
2. VOC Content: When calculated according to 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24),
as follows:
a. Finish Coats and Floor Sealers: Not more than 350 g/L.
b. Stains: Not more than 250 g/L.
3. Finish system materials shall comply with the testing and product requirements of the
California Department of Public Health's "Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation
of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental
Chambers."
4. Stain: Penetrating and nonfading type.
a. Color: As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range.
5. Floor Sealer: Pliable, penetrating type.
6. Finish Coats: Formulated for multicoat application on wood flooring.
2.4 ACCESSORY MATERIALS
A. Wood Sleepers and Subfloor: As specified in Section 06 1000 "Rough Carpentry" and
Section 06 1600 "Sheathing."
B. Vapor Retarder: ASTM D4397, polyethylene sheet not less than 8.0 mils thick.
C. Asphalt-Saturated Felt: ASTM D4869/D4869M, Type II.
D. Fasteners: As recommended by manufacturer, but not less than that recommended in NWFA's
"Installation Guidelines."
E. Thresholds and Saddles: To match wood flooring. Tapered on each side.
F. Reducer Strips: To match wood flooring. 2 inches wide, tapered, and in thickness required to
match height of flooring.

G. Cork Expansion Strip: Composition cork strip.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with
requirements for maximum moisture content, installation tolerances, and other conditions
affecting performance of wood flooring.
B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 PREINSTALLATION TESTING OF CONCRETE SLABS
A. Concrete Slabs: Verify that concrete substrates are dry and moisture-vapor emissions are
within acceptable levels according to manufacturer's written instructions.
1. Moisture Testing: Perform tests so that each test area does not exceed 200 sq. ft., and
perform no fewer than three tests in each installation area and with test areas evenly
spaced in installation areas.
a. Anhydrous Calcium Chloride Test: ASTM F1869. Proceed with installation only
after substrates have maximum moisture-vapor-emission rate of 3 lb of water/1000
sq. ft. in 24 hours.
b. Relative Humidity Test: Using in situ probes, ASTM F2170. Proceed with
installation only after substrates have a maximum 75 percent relative humidity
level measurement.
c. Perform additional moisture tests recommended by manufacturer. Proceed with
installation only after substrates pass testing.
3.3 PREPARATION
A. Broom or vacuum clean substrates to be covered immediately before product installation. After
cleaning, examine substrates for moisture, alkaline salts, carbonation, or dust. Proceed with
installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.4 INSTALLATION
A. Comply with flooring manufacturer's written installation instructions, but not less than applicable
recommendations in NWFA's "Installation Guidelines."
B. Provide expansion space at walls and other obstructions and terminations of flooring as
indicated on Drawings but not less than 3/4 inch.
C. Vapor Retarder: Comply with the following for vapor retarder installation:
1. Wood Flooring Nailed to Wood Subfloor: Install flooring over a layer of asphalt-saturated
felt.
D. Solid-Wood Flooring: Blind nail or staple flooring to substrate.

3.5 FIELD FINISHING
A. Machine-sand flooring to remove offsets, ridges, cups, and sanding-machine marks that are
noticeable after finishing. Vacuum and tack with a clean cloth immediately before applying
finish.
1. Comply with applicable recommendations in NWFA's "Installation Guidelines."
B. Fill and repair wood flooring defects.
C. Apply floor-finish materials in number of coats recommended by finish manufacturer for
application indicated, but not less than one coat of floor sealer and three finish coats.
1. Apply stains to achieve an even color distribution matching approved Samples.
2. For water-based finishes, use finishing methods recommended by finish manufacturer to
minimize grain raise.
D. Cover wood flooring before finishing.
E. Do not cover wood flooring after finishing until finish reaches full cure, and not before seven
days after applying last finish coat.
3.6 PROTECTION
A. Protect installed wood flooring during remainder of construction period with covering of heavy
kraft paper or other suitable material. Do not use plastic sheet or film that might cause
condensation.
1. Do not move heavy and sharp objects directly over kraft-paper-covered wood flooring.
Protect flooring with plywood or hardboard panels to prevent damage from storing or
moving objects over flooring.
