SMOKE- AND FIRE-RATED PARTITION SIGNAGE
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section includes smoke- and fire-rated partition identification signage.
B. Related Requirements:
1. Section 01 8113 “Sustainable Design Requirements” for general requirements and
procedures for compliance with certain USGBC LEED prerequisites and credits.
2. Section 07 8413 “Penetration Firestopping” for metal or plastic labels for penetration
firestopping identification.
3. Section 07 8443 “Joint Firestopping.”
4. Section 10 1423 "Panel Signage" for panel signs.
5. Section 14 0001 "Elevators" for code-required conveying equipment signage.
6. Divison 22 Sections "Plumbing" for labels, tags, and nameplates for plumbing systems
and equipment.
7. Divison 23 Sections "Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning" for labels, tags, and
nameplates for HVAC systems and equipment.
8. Divison 26 Sections "Electrical" for labels, tags, and nameplates for electrical equipment
and for illuminated, self-luminous, and photoluminescent exit sign units.
1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Make Submittals in accordance with Section 01 3300 “Submittal Procedures.”
B. Product Data: For each type of product.
C. Sustainable Design Submittals:
1. Adhesives And Sealants: Provide manufacturers' or third-party certification of testing to
and compliance with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard
method v1.2-2017, that includes the following information:
a. The exposure scenario used to determine compliance.
b. The range of total VOCs after 14 days, measured as specified in the CDPH
Standard Method v1.2:
1) 0.5 mg/m^3 or less;
2) Between 0.5 and 5.0 mg/m^3; or
3) 5.0 mg/m^3 or more.
c. Laboratory accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025.
d. Claims of compliance for wet-applied products must state the amount applied in
mass per surface area.

e. Provide MSDS or other manufacturer documentation with disclosure of VOC
content for all wet-applied products.
f. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with IEQc2 information for
adhesives/sealants installed within the waterproofing membrane.
2. Show sign mounting heights and locations.
3. Show message list, typestyles, graphic elements, and layout for each sign at full size.
D. Samples for Verification: For each type of sign assembly showing all components and with the
required finishes, in manufacturer's standard size unless otherwise indicated and as follows:
1. Partition Identification Signs: Full-size Sample.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering products that
may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to the following or equal:

2.2 LEED REQUIREMENTS
A. Adhesives And Sealants: For field applications that are inside the weatherproofing membrane:
Adhesives/sealants must be tested and determined compliant in accordance with California
Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2-2017, using the applicable
exposure scenario. The default scenario is the private office scenario.
1. All adhesives/sealants wet-applied on site must meet the applicable chemical content
requirements of SCAQMD Rule 1168, October 6, 2017, Adhesive and Sealant
Applications, as analyzed by the methods specified in Rule 1168. The provisions of
SCAQMD Rule 1168 do not apply to adhesives and sealants subject to state or federal
consumer product VOC regulations.
2.3 RATED PARTITION IDENTIFICATION SIGNS
A. Partition Identification Signage: Provide signage with smooth, uniform surfaces; with message
and characters having uniform faces, sharp corners, and precisely formed lines and profiles.
1. Options: At Contractors option, provide one of the following:
a. Preprinted vinyl signs.
b. Preprinted continuous vinyl tape.
c. Stenciling.
B. Preprinted Vinyl Signs:
1. Size: Minimum 10 by 14 inches.
2. Copy Color: Red or black with contrasting background color.
3. Letter Style: Helvetica regular, upper case; minimum 1 inch high.
4. Mounting Method: Pressure-sensitive, permanent adhesive with release liner on the
back.
C. Preprinted Continuous Vinyl Tape Signs:

1. Tape Adhesive: Permanent bond, self adhesive.
2. Tape Height: 2 inches.
3. Tape (Background) Color: Red.
4. Copy Color: White.
5. Letter Style: 1 inch high, Helvetica regular, upper and lower case.
D. Stenciling:
1. Provide heavy-duty, 14 mil polyester plastic, die-cut stencils for field-applied stenciled
signage.
2. Paint Type: Acrylic, semi-gloss, roller applied.
3. Maximum VOC: 150 grams per liter.
4. Letter Color: Safety red.
5. Letter Size and Style: 2 inches high, Helvetica regular, upper and lower case.
E. Copy: Provide the following copy for partition identification signs. Coordinate with each wall,
barrier, and partition type.
1. "1 Hour Rated Fire Wall - Protect All Openings and Penetrations"
2. "2 Hour Rated Fire Wall - Protect All Openings and Penetrations"
3. "3 Hour Rated Fire Wall - Protect All Openings and Penetrations"
4. "1 Hour Smoke Barrier - Protect All Openings and Penetrations"
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with
requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of signage
work.
B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Install signage using mounting methods indicated and according to manufacturer's written
instructions.
1. Install signage level, plumb, true to line, and at locations and heights indicated, with sign
surfaces free of distortion and other defects in appearance.
2. Before installation, verify that surfaces are clean and free of materials or debris that
would impair installation.
B. Partition Identification Signs: Install partition identification signage on both sides of fire-rated
partitions and smoke barrier partitions, according to Code. Confirm sign locations and height
prior to installation.
1. Install signs on both faces of partitions above suspended ceilings and below access
flooring.
2. Install at least one sign on both sides of each partition of less than 30 feet. Install signs
at not more than 30 feet on centers and not more than 15 feet from any wall corner or
angle.
C. Preprinted Vinyl Signs: Align signs in final position before removing release liner. Remove
release liner in stages, and apply and firmly press sign into final position. Press from the middle
outward to obtain good bond without blisters or fishmouths.

D. Preprinted Continuous Vinyl Tape Signage: Install continuous tape signage securely. Burnish
or hand roll tape after initial placement. Test and confirm permanent adhesion.
E. Apply stenciled signage with paint roller. Provide full paint coverage with no voids or holidays.
3.3 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING
A. Remove and replace damaged or deformed signs and signs that do not comply with specified
requirements. Replace signs with damaged or deteriorated finishes.
