Attention is directed to the Contract and General Conditions and all Sections within Division 01 – General Requirements which are hereby made a part of this Section of the Specifications. B. Examine all other Sections of the Specifications for requirements which affect work of this Section whether or not such work is specifically mentioned in this Section. C. Coordinate work with trades affecting, or affected by, work of this Section. Cooperate with such trades to assure the steady progress of all work under the Contract. D. Contractor shall register with “Dig Safe” 72 hours prior to construction. It is the Contractor’s responsibility to maintain “Dig Safe” registrations and “Dig Safe” markings. Contractor shall comply fully with applicable utility company requirements. 1.02 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: 1. Furnishing and installing traffic and parking signs and posts, and appurtenant work, complete as indicated, specified, and as directed. B. Related Sections include the following: 1. Section 03 3000 Cast-In-Place Concrete 2. Section 31 0000 Earth Moving 3. Section 31 2500 Erosion and Sedimentation Controls 1.03 REFERENCED STANDARDS A. Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), “Standard Specification for Highways and Bridges.” 2020 Edition, Supplemental Specifications dated June 30, 2020. (“Standard Specifications”). B. Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Works “Standard Drawings for Signs and Supports” 1990. C. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), “Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices” (MUTCD) 2009 with Massachusetts Amendments and Standard Municipal Traffic Code, January 2012. 1.04 SUBMITTALS A. Shop Drawings and manufacturers’ descriptive literature showing sign legend and posts, and amount of each item. Materials and other details shall be submitted for each item to be furnished for the project. The work under this item shall conform to the relevant provisions of Sections 828 and 840 of the Standard Specifications, the MUTCD, and the following: 1. This work shall include furnishing and installing of retroreflective sign panels of aluminum type A (minimum thickness 0.08-inch) within the site and along Station Avenue in accordance with the plans and as directed by the Engineer. 2. This work shall include furnishing and installing of P-5 sign posts for all traffic and parking signs within the site and along Station Avenue in accordance with the plans and as directed by the Engineer. a. P-5 sign posts may be either the square tube post or U channel type at the Contractor’s option. b. Breakaway capabilities shall be maintained via the use of a lap splice or slip base system. Signs with two posts shall be installed as per manufacturer's specifications, except that the sign post anchor shall be embedded at least 4-feet below ground surface. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 PREPARATION AND INSTALLATION A. The work under this item shall conform to the relevant provisions of Sections 828 and 840 of the Standard Specifications, the MUTCD, and the following: 1. Field verify underground utilities prior to sign installation. Primary utilities of concern of shallow depths are lawn sprinkler systems, electric, telephone, fiber optic, cable and gas. 2. Traffic sign installation shall be in accordance with the Standard Drawings for Signs and Supports and the following: Sign Size* Square Tube Amount – Post Size Sign Size* U-Channel Post Amount 7.5 SF and Under 1 – 2¼” x 2¼” 10 SF and Under Single Post Over 7.5 SF up to 15 SF 2 – 2¼” x 2¼” Over 10 SF up to 20 SF Two Posts Over 15 SF up to 20 SF 2 – 2½” x 2½” *Sign with a width of 4’ or greater requires two posts. 3. All signs shall be installed per the MUTCD and shall provide minimum horizontal clearance per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) when installed adjacent to walking paths. MUTCD requires the minimum height of 7-feet for sign installations above sidewalks (measured vertically from the bottom of the sign to the sidewalk). All vertical sign supports shall be erected plumb. 4. Patching and repairing of the disturbed roadway, sidewalks, grass islands, etc. to match the surrounding surfaces shall also be included under this item. END OF SECTION
