Section includes supplying wood casework; countertops; casework hardware, epoxy resin sinks and epoxy resin windowsills. B. Plumbing Subcontractor shall install all sinks, faucets, strainers, tailpieces, traps, bubblers, gas cocks and valves and trim if furnished by the casework supplier; Plumbing Subcontractor shall provide all labor to interconnect these items and connect these items to building systems. C. Electrical Subcontractor shall install electrical equipment if furnished by the casework supplier as specified. Electrical Subcontractor shall provide all labor to interconnect these items with the building systems. Electrical boxes, plates and wiring devices shall be provided by the Electrical Subcontractor. The casework contractor will provide the appropriate cutouts as noted on the approved shop drawings. D. HVAC Subcontractor shall install all mechanical devices if furnished by the casework supplier as specified. HVAC Subcontractor shall provide all labor to interconnect these items to the building systems. E. The HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical Subcontractors shall extend building utilities to and connect appliances. F. Work shall be conducted in accordance with General Conditions, Supplementary Conditions, Division 1 and the requirements of this Section. G. Related Sections: 1. Manufacturers shall be members of AWI, have established quality control criteria B. Casework shall meet or exceed load tests as outlined in ANSI A161.1. C. Manufacturers shall comply, per architect’s specification, with special requirements related to the Americans with Disabilities Act, 28 CFR Part 36, ADA Standards for Accessible Design. D. Sustainable Design Intent: Comply with project requirements intended to achieve sustainable design, measured and documented according to the LEED V4 Green Building Rating System, of the US Green Building Council. Refer to 018113.23 SUSTAINABLE DESIGN REQUIREMENTS - LEED FOR SCHOOLS for certification level and certification requirements. E. Items shall suit space conditions and where equipment is intended to occupy fixed locations, the physical conditions and roughing‐in of the building are to control the absolute sizes and arrangements. F. Project Standard: 1. Stock numbers of items of equipment, as indicated on Equipment Schedules, have been selected from one manufacturer’s catalog for design purposes only. 2. Items of equipment by approved manufacturers (other than the Project Standard) need not be identical to the items indicated, however, they must satisfy the same requirements, provide the same facilities and fulfill the same functions as the specified items. 3. Where items of equipment by approved manufacturers (other than Project Standard) are not of the same lengths as the items indicated, adjust equipment layouts as follows: a. Where items of equipment are against the wall and confined by walls at both ends. 1) Add a filler panel, and/or 2) Increase the length of one or more units, and/or 3) Add an additional item of equipment. b. Where items of equipment are freestanding or are not confined by walls at both ends, adjust as above, except that overall length need only be approximate. 4. It is intended that wood dowels shall secure cabinet body components and glue, but the use of concealed interlocking mechanical fasteners conforming to AWI 1600B‐S‐ 4.A especially designed for use with particleboard shall be acceptable. 6. Where items of equipment by approved manufacturers (other than the Project Standard) necessitate changes in mechanical or electrical services, said changes shall be the Contractor’s responsibility and shall be coordinated and accomplished at no additional cost to the Owner. 1.04 SUBMITTALS A. Section 01600 ‐ Product Requirements: Submittal requirements. B. Shop Drawings: 1. Indicate casework locations, large‐scale plans, elevations, cross sections, rough in and anchor placement dimensions, tolerances and clearances required. 2. Include utility rough‐in dimensions. C. Product Data: 1. Submit component dimensions, configurations, construction details, joint details, and attachments, utility and service requirements and locations. 2. Include associated components, including grommets, sink, sink fittings, appliances, fume hoods and other items as indicated on drawings. 3. Include manufacturer’s literature. D. Samples (per architect’s request): 1. Wood samples 2. Finish samples 3. Edge banding 4. Hinges 5. Pulls 6. Catches 7. Louvers 8. Grommets E. Sample Unit: 1. When requested by the Architect, submit full‐size cabinet, as herein specified. 2. Submitted cabinets may be used in the Project. F. Coordination Submittals: 1. Copy same submittals to other trades and other Prime Contractors who have connecting or adjacent Work for coordination review and for locating their Work connected to or adjacent to the equipment specified herein. Qualifications: 1. Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing products specified in this Section with minimum ten years’ experience. B. Mockup (per architect’s request): 1. Section 01400 ‐ Quality Requirements: Mockup requirements. 2. Construct full size mockup including base and upper cabinet, complete with drawers, door and adjustable shelf. 3. Locate where directed by Architect. 4. Incorporate accepted mockup as part of Work. 1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Provide warranty for manufactured product. B. Accept casework on site; inspect on arrival for damage. C. Store and handle casework in manner to prevent damage and deterioration. D. Provide packaging such as cardboard or other containers, separators, banding, spreaders and paper wrappings to protect metal items. E. Store casework in a protected dry area, provided by the owner, away from direct sunlight, with temperature 70 degrees F (+/‐ 10) and relative humidity of 25–50%. Casework shall be stored elevated above moisture contact. Storage area must be isolated from outside weather conditions. Casework shall be installed only in areas where temperature and humidity are maintained within the above‐stated range. Storage and installations in conditions other than those stated above will void all product warranties. F. All cabinets to be complete with hardware attached (or provided loose where not practical to ship attached) with all necessary scribes, fillers and molding; all items to be marked on outside of packaging for identification. G. Protect exposed finish surfaces by suitable means. H. Coordinate size of access and route to place of installation. 1.07 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING A. Coordinate casework installation with location and installation of service utilities. B. The manufacturer shall guarantee the casework against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of three years from date of acceptance. B. Warranty shall cover the repair or replacement, at the manufacturer’s discretion of defective material. C. Non‐manufactured components and accessories, such as faucets, fittings and fume hoods, shall be covered by the specific manufacturer’s warranty. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 Manufacturers A. Project Standard: Drawings and standards for casework and equipment are based on wood casework as manufactured by CiF Lab Solutions, 53 Courtland Avenue, Vaughan, ON, Canada L4K3T2 B. The specifications outline a quality standard necessary for required performance. Only products, which meet or exceed these standards, shall be considered acceptable. C. Acceptance of a bid for the required materials does not indicate product acceptance. All manufacturers must meet minimum construction requirements, must submit necessary materials and documentation for approved substitution and must revise their construction as necessary to meet the standards set forth herein. D. Approved Equals: Manufacturer’s that are listed as basis of design or approved are still obligated to hold ALL specification requirements as called out in this document. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS in materials or fabrication permitted that have not been requested in writing and responded to with approval, during an RFI period prior to bid. 1. Wood‐Metal Industries, 100 East Sherman Street, Selinsgrove, PA 17870 2. Stevens Industries, 704 West Main Street | Teutopolis, IL 62467 2.02 Materials A. Wood veneer shall be specifically hand selected by area (within reasonable visual range) prior to fabrication for uniformity of color and grain. The resulting selection shall provide a pleasing uniform color with natural characteristics selected to not interfere with the overall aesthetic appearance of the casework. B. Solid Lumber Used: All hardwoods shall be carefully and thoroughly air‐dried, and then kiln dried to a moisture content of 6‐9 percent before use. C. Edge Banding 1. All banded edges (cabinet faces, frames, end panels, tops, bottoms and shelving to be 5mm rolled maple hardwood edge banding. E. Exposed Surfaces 1. Veneer used for exterior surfaces exposed to view after installation, and the exposed interior ends, tops and bottoms of open cases shall be construction of Grade AA White Maple, Plain Sliced, slipped matched of at least 1/45 inch thick veneer. Manufacturer shall follow the verbiage in ANSI Standard HP‐1‐2004 paragraph 3.3.3. a. All Doors and Drawer Fronts will be vertically matched within the same cabinet. F. Semi‐Exposed Veneer 1. Veneer faces used for semi‐exposed areas shall be constructed of White Maple Plain Sliced grade 1 of the same species as the exposed veneer. 2. Interior shelves shall be banded with 5mm rolled hardwood edge banding of the same species G. Unexposed Surfaces 1. Veneer of any species H. Plywood Core Construction for Casework Body, Interior shelving and Doors/Drawer Heads: 1. All ¾”plywood panels used for cabinet sides shall be constructed as 7 ply veneer core plywood. 1” panels shall be constructed as 9 ply hardwood plywood. Panels must be produced from North American sources, import panels are not allowed. All panels shall be manufactured without the use of urea formaldehyde if NAUF required on project. Plywood used for shelving shall be ¾” veneer core plywood up to 36” in width, over 36” shall be 9‐ply 1” thick. 2. Door/Drawer heads to be manufactured using ¾” 3 ply particle core plywood panels (STANDARD). Panels must be produced from North American sources, import panels are not allowed. All panels shall be manufactured without the use of urea formaldehyde if NAUF required on project. 2.03 Hardware A. Hinges 1. Standard hinges for wall cabinets, base cabinets and tall cabinet doors shall be of the heavy‐duty, wrap around, institutional type with five‐knuckles, non‐removable pin and rounded ends. Hinges for overlay door construction shall be 2‐¾” high by .095” thick and hinges for lipped Radius construction shall be 2‐½” high by .072 thick. Hinge swing shall be 270 degrees. Offset kitchen cabinet type, plain butt hinges or hinges with removable pins will not be acceptable. 3. Hinge screws shall be concealed when door is closed. 4. Doors less than 40‐¼” high shall have 2 hinges and those 40‐¼” high and over shall have three hinges. B. Pulls 1. Standard pulls shall be satin aluminum bent wire style with 4” centers. 2. Optional extruded aluminum and plated wire pulls with 4” centers shall be available. 3. Sliding doors shall have a brushed steel recessed pull. C. Drawer Slides 1. Drawer slides shall be full extension, ball bearing type equal to Accuride model #3832, full extension series. File drawer slides shall be equal to the Accuride model #4034, 150lb, full extension D. Catches 1. Magnetic catches with door‐mounted strike plate. 2. 1‐catch mounted at top and bottom of tall case doors. E. Adjustable Shelf supports 1. Shelf supports shall be twin‐pin design with anti‐tip up shelf restraints for both ¾” and provide slot to mechanically fasten shelf to clip. Load rating shall be minimum 300 pounds per shelf support. F. Locks 1. Locks shall be of a removable core design with 5‐disk tumbler. Cabinets to be keyed alike per room, each room keyed differently and master‐keyed, unless otherwise noted on drawings. 2. Two keys shall be provided per lock. 3. Six master keys shall be provided. 4. Provide locks on all doors and drawers on base cabinets, wall cabinets, tall storage and wardrobe units. Keyed alike per room and mastered key. 2.04 Miscellaneous Components A. Louvers and grills shall be provided as specified on the drawings. Manufacturer’s standard grills shall be installed on both sides of door openings to provide a uniform appearance. Punched metal louvers with exposed sharp edges shall not be permitted. B. Grommets with covers shall be provided where shown on drawings. C. Base molding is to be provided by Section 096500 – RESILIENT FLOORING. D. Sliding Porcelain Enamel Markerboard units: Basis of design: Claridge Products and Equipment, Inc. manufactured in accordance with Porcelain Enamel Institute’s specification. Trim shall be 6063 alloy grade aluminum. Two track series with top mounted panels. Provide Horizontal Sliding Units with all corners reinforced with angles to strengthen frame. Nylon ball bearing rollers at top of unit and nylon guide rollers at bottom of unit to be of sufficient size and number to eliminate vibration and provide smooth and quiet operation of the panels. F. Goggle Cabinet. Basis of design: Fisher Scientific, EISCO Goggle Sanitizer Cabinet or equal. Provide with 35 goggles. G. Wardrobe Rod and Mirror 1. Wardrobe rod and flanges to be 1 1/16” inch chrome rod supported by chrome flanges. I. Rod: Knape & Vogt #750 1 or equal. II. Flange: Knape & Vogt #632 or equal. 2. At all wardrobe cabinet, provide an 1/8” thick 12” wide x 18” high break and impact resistant acrylic mirror with a shelf on a rod side door. H. Standards and brackets for adjustable shelving: Basis of design: Knape & Vogt Manufacturing Company, 82 Series Standard and 182 Series Bracket, heavy‐duty, double‐ track standard and bracket system. 2.05 Construction A. General Construction 1. This specification is based on an industry‐standard maple cabinet construction. 2. Top and intermediate rails, fixed partitions and fixed shelves where applicable to be glued, doweled and screwed to cabinet sides. Cabinets shall be clamped under pressure to insure joint integrity and unit squareness. B. Counter Tops 1. Plastic Laminate exposed surface and edges are horizontal grade, high pressure, plastic laminate applied to particleboard core. Finished top is 1 inch (25 mm) thick, and the curb is 4 inches (102 mm) high. A phenolic backing sheet is applied to the bottom surface. Selected from Wilsonart, Formica, Nevamar or equals’ full range of standard laminates. 2. Solid Surface Countertops and Curbs – REFERENCE 123661.19 - RECYLCED GLASS COUNTERTOPS a. Provide products with LEED V4 compliant Material Ingredient Reporting. b. Material: Homogenous-filled plastic resin complying with ICPA SS-1 C. Fabricate tops in largest pieces possible with shop applied backsplash and edges unless otherwise indicated on drawings. Form field joints using manufacturer’s recommended adhesive, with joints inconspicuous in finished work. Comply with solid surface material manufacturer’s recommendations for adhesives, sealers, fabrication and finishing. Reference Section 064020 for product use. d. Substrate: medium density moisture resistant fiberboard. b. Joint Adhesive: Manufacturer’s standard one or two-part adhesive kit to create inconspicuous, non-porous joints. c. Reinforce joints with strip of polymer material. Provide holes and cutouts indicated on approved shop drawings. Rout cutouts and complete by sanding all edges smooth. d. Solid-Surfacing Material, Quartz-Agglomerate Type: Solid sheets consisting of quartz aggregates bound together with a matrix of filled plastic resin complying with ANSI SS-1 and ISSFA-2. e. Available Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) CaesarStone 2) Cosentino USA; Silestone. 3) Dal-Tile; ONE Quartz Surfaces. 4) E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company; Zodiaq. 5) LG Hausys; Viatera Quartz Surface 3. Epoxy Resin Worksurfaces/Sinks: a. Thickness: 1 inch (25 mm) unless otherwise indicated. Variation in thickness: plus or minus 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) from corner to corner. Maximum allowable warpage: 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) in 36 inch (900 mm) span or 3/16 inch (4.5 mm) in 96 inch (2400 mm) span. b. Fabrication: Shop fabricate in longest practical lengths. Bond joints with highly chemical resistant cement with properties and color similar to base material. Provide 1/8 inch (3 mm) drip groove at underside of exposed edges, set back 1/2 inch (13 mm) from face. Finish exposed edges. Edge treatment: Standard 1/8 inch (2 mm) chamfered edge. Corner treatment: exposed corners shall be eased slightly for safety. c. Back and end splashes: Supplied loose for field installation. Same material and thickness as worksurfaces. Top‐mounted end splash where worksurfaces abut adjacent construction at and locations indicated on Drawings. d. Joints: Maximum 1/8 inch (2 mm), bonded with epoxy grout. Make joints between two benches level. Locate joints away from sinks and over or near supports e. Epoxy Resin Sinks: Mold sinks from thermosetting epoxy resin. Mold interior corners to radius. Slope sink base to drain outlet. Provide 1‐1/2 inch (38 mm) outlet with open ended standpipe; standpipe overflow 2 inches (50 mm) shorter than depth of sink. Unless otherwise indicated, fabricate sinks of drop‐in design supported by upper flange from worksurface. Color: To match adjacent worksurface. 2.06 FABRICATION A. Base Units 1. Cabinet ends shall be banded on all exposed surfaces. 2. Front top horizontal rails shall be ¾’’ x 3 ¾’’ veneer core plywood with edge banding and fastened to cabinet ends with fluted dowels. b. Rear top vertical support rail to be ¾” x the drawer height plus 2” on cabinets with a drawer and ¾” x 3 ¾” on cupboard door cabinets. Rear bottom vertical support rail to be ¾” x 3 ¾” on all cabinets. All rear support rails to be fastened to cabinet ends with fluted dowels. 3. Toe space rail shall be ¾’’ x 3‐3/4” and fastened to cabinet ends with fluted dowels to form a 3‐3/4” high x 2" deep toe space. 4. Cabinet bottoms shall be banded on the front exposed edge. It shall be set flush and fastened to cabinet ends with fluted dowels. 5. Cabinet backs in semi‐exposed cabinets shall be fabricated of one‐piece ¼” tempered hardboard with white coated face. (Drawer units will not have a back panel, unless specified). 6. Cabinet backs on open cabinets will be one‐piece ¼” MDF core plywood, with matching cabinet veneer. 7. All base cabinet backs shall be removable without the need to remove the top drawer. 8. Vertical dividers (full height and half height) shall be a minimum 3/4” material of matching species and grade as cabinet body. Dividers shall be secured to bottom, front top rail and rear top rail with dowels and screws. Exposed edges shall be edge banded matching cabinet body species. 9. Adjustable shelves shall be adjustable at 1¼’’ spacing. Front edges of shelves shall be edge banded. Shelves shall be full depth in standard cupboards and in open units. Adjustable shelves on base cabinets 36’’ and smaller shall be ¾’’ thick. Adjustable shelves on cabinets over 36’’ wide shall be 1’’ thick. All shelving in open cabinets shall be 1” thick (regardless of cabinet size) 10. Drawer Construction: Drawer box back, front and sides to be of ½’’ Baltic Birch, 9 ply hardwood plywood and shall be finished with the same laboratory grade finish as applied to the cabinet. Use dovetail joinery on all four joints. Drawer bottom shall be ¼’’ white thermo‐fused melamine faced MDF and shall be grooved into all four sides of the drawer box and glued into position. Drawer body will be affixed to drawer front by screws. 11. Drawer Construction: Drawer box back, front and sides to be of ½’’ Baltic Birch, 9 ply hardwood plywood and shall be finished with the same laboratory grade finish as applied to the cabinet. Use dovetail joinery on all four joints. Drawer bottom shall be ½” Baltic Birch, 9 ply hardwood plywood and shall be grooved into all four sides of the drawer box and glued into position. Drawer bottoms shall be finished using the same laboratory grade finish as applied to the cabinet. 12. Doors and drawer fronts shall be ¾’’ 3 ply particle core plywood and edge banded. Construction shall be Reveal overlay. Grain direction on doors and drawer fronts shall be vertically matched. B. Wall and tall cases 1. Case ends shall be ¾” veneer core plywood edge banded on exposed edges. 2. Bottoms of wall cases shall be 1’’ thick veneer core plywood, edge banded on exposed edge, set flush and fastened to cabinet ends with fluted dowels. 4. Bottoms of tall cases shall be ¾’’ thick and edge banded on exposed edges, fastened to cabinet with fluted dowels 5. Backs of semi‐exposed wall cabinets shall be ¼” hardboard with white coated face. Backs of semi‐exposed tall cabinets shall be 1/2” thick white thermally‐fused melamine. Backs will be captured on ends and glued, screwed and stapled into the top and bottom. Rear rails will be applied to rear exterior of the cabinet. 6. Backs of open wall cabinets shall be ¼” MDF plywood, with veneer matching that of the cabinet body. Back of open tall cabinets shall be ½” plywood, with veneer and core matching that of the cabinet body. Backs will be captured on the ends and will be glued, screwed and stapled into the top and bottom. Rear rails will be applied to rear exterior of the cabinet. 7. Fixed center shelves on tall cases shall be 1’’ thick with matching edge band on exposed edges on all open, hinged and sliding door cabinets. Fixed center shelves shall be fastened to ends with fluted dowels. 8. Adjustable shelves shall be set on double pin, seismic plastic locking shelf supports at 1¼’’ spacing. Front edges of shelves shall be edge banded. Shelves shall be full depth in standard cupboards and full depth in open units. Adjustable shelves on cabinets 36’’ and smaller shall be ¾’’ thick. Adjustable shelves on cabinets over 36’’ wide shall be 1’’ thick. All shelving in open cabinets shall be 1” thick (regardless of cabinet size) C. Solid Doors 1. Reveal Overlay construction doors shall be fabricated of ¾” 3 ply particle core plywood, with veneers matching the cabinet body. Provide edge banding on all edges. 2. Hinged doors for Reveal overlay construction shall be fabricated of ¾” x 2 ¾” solid hardwood, using stile and rail construction. 2. Casework finish shall meet AWI Quality Standards Eighth Edition for Specialty Finishes – Premium Catalyzed Vinyl and SEFA 8‐1999 CHEMICAL RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS. Manufacturers are to provide documentation to the architect of their finishes’ compliance to the above. 3. Apply a coat of sealer and two finish coats to surfaces. Thoroughly sand surfaces between coats. Maximum film build is 6 wet mils and (2.9‐3.3) mils dry. 4. Solids content to be minimum 35% by weight. 5. Prior to finishing sand surfaces smooth, ensuring that they are free of dirt, defects, chatter and machine marks. 6. Apply sealer and finish coats to all exposed and semi‐exposed casework surfaces. 7. Finish coat shall leave a smooth, clear, satin finish with consistent coloration. 8. Finishes must pass the following tests or they will be rejected. a. 20 cycle Cold Check Test. b. Print Test ASTM D2091 c. Moisture Resistance Test d. Impact Resistance Test e. Hot Water Test f. Chemical Resistance Test – ASTM D1308 2.01 PLUMBING FIXTURES A. Epoxy Resin Sinks and Miscellaneous Fittings: 1. Project Standard: Sinks and fittings are based upon products manufactured by The Durcon Company, Inc., 1255 South Mill Street, Plymouth, Michigan 48170. 2. Provide sinks in the quantity and sizes indicated on the drawings. Provide epoxy resin sink covers for a quantity of 50% of epoxy resin sinks being supplied. 3. The specifications outline minimum material and construction standards. 4. Only products meeting or exceeding this minimum standard shall be acceptable. 5. Selected by the architect from the manufacturer’s standard color selection. Color selection shall include no less than ten standard colors. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 INSTALLATION A. Install casework, components and accessories under manufacturer representative’s supervision whenever possible, using skilled labor especially trained for this work. Cabinets are to be installed in a professional and industry‐accepted manner, including all scribes, moldings and necessary trim, complete and in operating condition according to outlined plans and specifications. B. Set casework items plumb and square, securely anchored to building structure. C. Furnish casework complete with trim strips, fillers and backs as may be required; all cutouts required for trim, sinks, equipment, shall be made by the casework supplier. D. Unless noted otherwise, furnish all sinks, faucets, bubblers, baskets, tailpieces, traps and gas cocks as shown on approved shop drawings for installation and hook‐up by Plumbing Subcontractor. E. Fume hoods and exhaust booths shall be pre‐plumbed and pre‐wired. F. The HVAC Subcontractor shall provide exhaust fans and motors. G. Field touch‐up blemishes to original finish. H. Discard or remove and replace damaged members. 3.02 ADJUSTING A. Adjust doors, drawers, hardware and other moving or operating parts to function smoothly. B. Adjustable shelves shall be installed consistent with the shop drawings. 3.03 CLEANING A. All packaging material and installation‐related debris shall be placed in an owner‐provided dumpster on the construction site. The work area shall be left broom clean. B. Installer shall remove all pencil marks, adhesive and sawdust resulting from this work. C.
