RECYCLED GLASS COUNTERTOPS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section includes recycled glass surfacing for countertops.
B. Related Requirements:
1. Section 01 8113 “Sustainable Design Requirements” for general requirements and
procedures for compliance with certain USGBC LEED prerequisites and credits.
2. Section 06 4000 “Architectural Woodwork" for custom base cabinets and for solid
surfacing material classroom portals.
3. Section 11 3013 “Residential Appliances.”
4. Section 12 3000 “Manufactured Casework" for base cabinets.
5. Section 12 3653.16 “Solid Phenolic Compact Surfacing Countertops" for solid phenolic
compact (SPC) surfacing suitable for use on countertops and backsplashes.
6. Division 22 Sections "Plumbing" for sinks and plumbing fittings.
1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Make Submittals in accordance with Section 01 3300 “Submittal Procedures.”
B. Product Data: For countertop materials.
C. Sustainable Design Submittals:
1. Environmental Product Declaration (EPD): Provide manufacturers’ product
documentation for each product having an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
a. Documentation should confirm EPD conforms with ISO 14205 EN 15804 or ISO
21930.
b. EPD shall have at least Cradle to Gate scope.
c. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc2 information for each
product having an EPD.
2. Recycled Content: Provide manufacturers’ product documentation that includes recycled
content claims for the products contributing towards compliance. Claims must conform to
the definition in ISO 14021-1999, Environmental Labels and Declarations, Self-Declared
Environmental Claims.
a. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc3 Option 2 information
for products with recycled content installed in the building.
3. Health Product Declaration (HPD): Provide manufacturers’ product documentation for
each product having a publically available material inventory down to at least 0.1 percent
or 1000 ppm.
a. Documentation should be in the form of one of the following:

1) A publically available inventory of all ingredients identified by name and
Chemical Abstract Service Registration Number (CASRN).
2) A published, complete Health Product Declaration in compliance with the
Health Product Declaration open Standard.
3) Material Health Certificate or Cradle to Cradle Certification under standard
version 3 or later with a Material Health Achievement level at the Bronze
level or higher.
4) A Declare product label indicating that all ingredients have been evaluated
and disclosed down to 1000 ppm.
5) Cradle to Cradle Material Health Certificate at the Bronze Level or higher.
b. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc2 information for each
product having an EPD.
4. Adhesives And Sealants: Provide manufacturers' or third-party certification of testing to
and compliance with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard
method v1.2-2017, that includes the following information:
a. The exposure scenario used to determine compliance.
b. The range of total VOCs after 14 days, measured as specified in the CDPH
Standard Method v1.2:
1) 0.5 mg/m^3 or less;
2) Between 0.5 and 5.0 mg/m^3; or
3) 5.0 mg/m^3 or more.
c. Laboratory accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025.
d. Claims of compliance for wet-applied products must state the amount applied in
mass per surface area.
e. Provide MSDS or other manufacturer documentation with disclosure of VOC
content for all wet-applied products.
f. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with IEQc2 information for
adhesives/sealants installed within the waterproofing membrane.
D. Shop Drawings: For countertops. Show materials, finishes, edge and backsplash profiles,
methods of joining, and cutouts for plumbing fixtures.
1. Show locations and details of joints.
2. Show direction of directional pattern, if any.
E. Samples for Verification: For the following products:
1. Countertop material, 6 inches square.
2. One full-size recycled glass countertop, with front edge and backsplash, 8 by 10 inches,
of construction and in configuration specified.
1.4 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS
A. Qualification Data: For fabricator.
1.5 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS
A. Maintenance Data: For recycled glass countertops to include in maintenance manuals. Include
Product Data for care products used or recommended by Installer and names, addresses, and
telephone numbers of local sources for products.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Fabricator Qualifications: Shop that employs skilled workers who custom-fabricate countertops
similar to that required for this Project, and whose products have a record of successful in-
service performance.
1. Firm shall have experience fabricating natural or engineered stone and be equipped with
standard stone fabricating equipment. Firm shall be evaluated and certified by
manufacturer.
B. Installer Qualifications: Fabricator of countertops.
C. Mockups: Build mockups to demonstrate aesthetic effects and to set quality standards for
fabrication and execution.
1. Build mockup of typical countertop as shown on Drawings.
2. Subject to compliance with requirements, approved mockups may become part of the
completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion.
1.7 FIELD CONDITIONS
A. Field Measurements: Verify dimensions of countertops by field measurements after base
cabinets are installed but before countertop fabrication is complete.
1.8 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate locations of utilities that will penetrate countertops.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 LEED REQUIREMENTS
A. Environmental Product Declaration (EPD): Provide products with Third Party Environmental
Product Declaration (EPD) whenever available.
B. Recycled Content: Provide products with the maximum recycled content possible. Minimum
recycled content 20 percent.
C. Health Product Declaration (HPD): Provide products with publically available material
inventories whenever available.
D. Adhesives And Sealants: For field applications that are inside the weatherproofing membrane:
Adhesives/sealants must be tested and determined compliant in accordance with California
Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2-2017, using the applicable
exposure scenario. The default scenario is the private office scenario.
1. All adhesives/sealants wet-applied on site must meet the applicable chemical content
requirements of SCAQMD Rule 1168, October 6, 2017, Adhesive and Sealant
Applications, as analyzed by the methods specified in Rule 1168. The provisions of
SCAQMD Rule 1168 do not apply to adhesives and sealants subject to state or federal
consumer product VOC regulations.

2.2 MANUFACTURERS
A. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide IceStone recycled
glass slabs by IceStone, LLC, Brooklyn, NY, or a comparable product by one of the following or
equal:
1. Caesarstone.
2. Curava Corporation.
2.3 RECYCLED GLASS SLAB MATERIALS
A. Composition: 100 percent recycled glass aggregate combined with Portland cement and color
pigments formed into flat slabs. Petroleum based resins not permitted.
B. Weight and Size:
1. Weight: 16.3 pounds per square foot at 1-1/4 inches thick.
2. Maximum Slab Size: 52-1/2 inches wide, 96 inches long and 1-1/4 inches thick.
3. Finished Thickness: 1-1/4 inch.
C. Total recycled content by weight: 70 percent post-industrial.
D. Colors and Finish: Provide colors indicated on Drawing AF-0.01, Finish Legend.
1. Finish: Polished.
E. Exposed Edges and Corners
1. Edges: Pencil.
2. Outside Corners: Shape to 1/8 inch radius.
3. Inside Corners: Shape to 1/4 inch radius.
4. Mitered or 90 Degree Corners: No radius needed.
F. Physical Performance Characteristics:
1. Compressive Strength: 13,000 psi, in accordance with ASTM C 109.
2. Flexural Strength: 890 psi, in accordance with ASTM C 293.
3. Specific Gravity: 2.31, in accordance with ASTM C 97.
4. Porosity/Absorption: 0.18 percent, unsealed, in accordance with ASTM C 642.
5. Chemical Durability: 0.05 percent expansion, in accordance with ASTM C 1260 for ASR
Reactivity.
6. Freeze Thaw: 0.49 percent expansion, 300 cycles, in accordance with ASTM C666.
7. Fire Rating: Class 1 (A), in accordance with ASTM E 84. Flame spread index: 0. Fuel
contribution: 0. Smoke density index: 0
8. Finish Level, Performance: Polished finish, with coefficient of static friction of 0.69 (dry);
0.61 (wet), ASTM C 1028.
9. Finish Level, Performance: Honed finish, with coefficient of static friction of 0.71 (dry);
0.62 (wet), ASTM C 1028.
10. Finish Level, Performance: Sandblasted finish, with coefficient of static friction of 0.85
(dry);

12. Food Safety: NSF/ANSI 51, NSF splash zone certified.
2.4 INSTALLATION MATERIALS
A. Mounting Adhesives: Provide clear 100 percent silicone adhesive as recommended by
manufacturer.

B. Joint Sealants: Provide color matched two-part polyester, epoxy or acrylic joint adhesive as
recommended by manufacturer.
1. Acceptable Product: Tenax Rivo 50 A & B Part Knife Grade Epoxy tinted to match Tenax
Tepox Epoxy colors.
C. Sealer: Provide sealer as recommended by manufacturer in care and maintenance guidelines.
1. Acceptable Products:
a. DuPont StoneTech Professional BulletProof Stone Sealer (water-based).
b. Miracle 511 H20 Plus (water-based).
c. Tenax Protex (solvent-based).
D. Wax: Provide wax as recommended by manufacturer in care and maintenance guidelines to
help protect surface and sealer.
1. Acceptable Products: CHENG Concrete Countertop Wax.
E. Cleaner: Provide a pH neutral cleaner as recommended by manufacturer in care and
maintenance guidelines.
1. Acceptable Products:
a. Seventh Generation All Purpose Cleaner- Free & Clear.
b. Method All Purpose Cleaner- Lavender.
c. Method Daily Granite Cleaner.
2.5 COUNTERTOP FABRICATION
A. Fabricate countertops according to recycled glass manufacturer's written instructions.
B. Shop Assembly: Fabricate using standard stone fabricating equipment in accordance with
manufacturer's fabrication guidelines.
C. Configuration:
1. Front: Straight, slightly eased at top.
2. Backsplash: Straight, slightly eased at corner.
3. End Splash: Matching backsplash.
D. Joints: Fabricate countertops without joints unless unavoidable.
1. Fabricate countertops in sections for joining in field, with joints at locations indicated.
a. Joint Locations: Not within 18 inches of a sink and not where a countertop section
less than 36 inches long would result, unless unavoidable.
E. Cutouts and Holes: Provide factory cutouts for plumbing fittings and bath accessories as
indicated on approved shop drawings.
1. All rough and finished openings shall be supported with reinforcing rods. Support cutouts
with 1/8 by 1/2 inch fiberglass strips set vertically in 3/16 inch wide by 5/8 inch deep saw
blade kerf positioned in the center of both the front and back bridge to extend a minimum
of 6 inches beyond the opening to the left and to the right. Encapsulate the
reinforcement "rod" with Tenax Micto VOC Free 2 Part Epoxy.
2. Cutouts shall have 1/4 inch minimum inside radius.
3. All exposed edges shall be polished.
F. Aprons and Built up Edges: All visible built up edges and aprons shall be mitered to avoid the
visual effect of segregation.

1. Clean surfacing back side and joints with acetone.
2. Apply sealer to entire finished surface following the manufacturer’s instructions to help
protect against staining.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates to receive recycled glass countertops and conditions under which
countertops will be installed, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for
installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of countertops.
B. Verify that substrates are plumb, level and flat and that necessary supports and blocking are in
place.
1. Four-Sided Perimeter Support: If a four-sided perimeter frame exists, additional
substrate is not required. Provide front-to-back support every 36 inches, in addition to
the strong perimeter support.
2. Three-Sided Perimeter Support: For structures that have perimeter support on three
sides require additional support. Installations with a depth of less than 26 inches require
supports every 24 inches. Installations with depths of over 26 inches require supports
every 18 inches.
3. Cantilevers: Cantilevers less than 9 inches do not require additional support. Cantilevers
greater than 9 inches require corbels, legs, columns or reinforcing rods every 24 inches.
C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Install countertops level to a tolerance of 1/8 inch in 8 feet, 1/4 inch maximum. Do not exceed
1/64-inch difference between planes of adjacent units.
B. Secure countertops to subtops with silicone adhesive according to recycled glass countertop
manufacturer's written instructions. Align adjacent surfaces and, using adhesive in color to
match countertop, form seams to comply with recycled glass countertop manufacturer's written
instructions. Carefully dress joints smooth, remove surface scratches, and clean entire surface.
C. Joints:
1. Joints between adjacent pieces of composite surfacing.
a. All joints shall be clean, flush, and level.
b. All joints shall be tight fitting, spacing shall not exceed 1/16 inch.
c. Seal joints with a color matched two-part polyester, epoxy or acrylic joint adhesive.
2. Joints between composite surfacing and backsplashes: Seal joints with clear 100
percent silicone adhesive.
3.3 WAXING AND CLEANING
A. Waxing: Apply CHENG Concrete Countertop Wax to composite surfacing for added protection.
Follow the product manufacturer’s instructions for application.
B. Clean: Clean exposed surfaces with non-abrasive pH neutral cleaner.

3.4 PROTECTION
A. Protect installed products until completion of the project.
B. Touch-up, repair, or replace damaged materials in a satisfactory manner.
