ENTRANCE FLOOR GRILLES
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section includes recessed floor grilles and frames (MAT-01).
B. Related Requirements:
1. Section 03 3000 "Cast-in-Place Concrete" for slab depression grouting and filling for
recessed foot grilles and frames.
2. Section 12 4813 "Entrance Floor Mats and Frames" for flexible floor mats and frames.
1.3 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate size and location of recesses in concrete to receive floor grilles and frames.
1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Make Submittals in accordance with Section 01 3300 “Submittal Procedures.”
B. Product Data: For each type of product.
1. Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of individual components
and profiles, and finishes for entrance floor grilles and frames.
C. Sustainable Design Submittals:
1. Recycled Content: Provide manufacturers’ product documentation that includes recycled
content claims for the products contributing towards compliance. Claims must conform to
the definition in ISO 14021-1999, Environmental Labels and Declarations, Self-Declared
Environmental Claims.
a. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc3 Option 2 information
for products with recycled content installed in the building.
2. Flooring Systems: Provide manufacturers' or third-party certification of testing to and
compliance with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard method
v1.2-2017 that includes the following information:
a. The exposure scenario used to determine compliance.
b. The range of total VOCs after 14 days, measured as specified in the CDPH
Standard Method v1.2:
1) 0.5 mg/m^3 or less;
2) Between 0.5 and 5.0 mg/m^3; or
3) 5.0 mg/m^3 or more.
c. Laboratory accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025.

d. Claims of compliance for wet-applied products must state the amount applied in
mass per surface area.
e. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with IEQc2 information for
flooring systems installed within the waterproofing membrane.
D. Shop Drawings:
1. Items penetrating floor grilles and frames, including door control devices.
2. Divisions between grille sections.
3. Perimeter floor moldings.
E. Samples: For the following products, in manufacturer's standard sizes:
1. Floor Grille: Assembled section of floor grille.
2. Frame Members: Sample of each type and color.
1.5 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS
A. Maintenance Data: For floor grilles and frames to include in maintenance manuals.
1.6 FIELD CONDITIONS
A. Field Measurements: Indicate measurements on Shop Drawings.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 LEED REQUIREMENTS
A. Recycled Content: Provide products with the maximum recycled content possible. Minimum
recycled content 20 percent.
B. Flooring Systems: Flooring products must be tested and determined compliant in accordance
with California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method v1.2-2017, using the
applicable exposure scenario. The default scenario if the private office scenario.
2.2 ENTRANCE FLOOR GRILLES, GENERAL
A. Structural Performance: Provide floor grilles and frames capable of withstanding the following
loads and stresses within limits and under conditions indicated:
1. Uniform floor load of 300 lbf/sq. ft.
2. Wheel load of 350 lb per wheel.
B. Accessibility Requirements: Comply with applicable requirements of Commonwealth of
Massachusetts Regulation 521 CMR, Architectural Access Board, as amended.
2.3 FLOOR GRILLES (MAT-01)
A. Provide manufacturer's standard floor-grille assemblies consisting of treads of type and profile
indicated, interlocked or joined together by cross members, and with support legs and other
components needed to produce a complete installation.

1. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Design Dual
Track foot grilles by Mats, Inc. or a comparable product by one of the following or equal:
a. C/S Group.
b. American Floor Mats, Inc.
c. Reese Enterprises, Inc.
B. Aluminum Floor Grilles: Provide manufacturer's standard floor grilles with extruded members,
top-surfaced tread rails, and as follows:
1. Construction: Bolt-thru design with individual aluminum spacers. Swedge, welded and
key lock fastening of rails is not allowed.
2. Material: Aluminum Alloy type 6061-T6. Soft Aluminum alloy (such as 6063-T52) is not
allowed
3. Drying Insert: Drying inserts to be Nylon material with 5 percent post-consumer recycled
content.
3. Tread Rails: Extruded-aluminum tread rails.
a. Aluminum Color: Mill finish.
4. Blades: T-Shaped blades, 1-5/16 by 1/8 by 1-1/2 inch size, combined with T shaped
blades 11/16 by 1/8 inch with anti-slip polymer C9065 insert. Spacing between blades
shall not exceed 3/16 inch.
4. Blades: T-Shaped blades, 3/8 by 1/8 by 1 inch size. Spacing between blades shall not
exceed 3/16 inch.
5. Dimension: Grille depth shall be 1-1/2 inch, with frame 1-1/81-5/8 inch.
6. Panels: Foot Grille shall be supplied in panels not to exceed 48 inch by 42 inch. One
piece design not allowed. All grille panels shall be supplied with individual, pre-
fabricated, factory-assembled frames.
7. Grille Size: As indicated on Drawings.
2.4 FRAMES
A. Provide manufacturer's standard frames of size and style for grille type, for permanent recessed
installation in subfloor, complete with installation anchorages and accessories. Unless
otherwise indicated, fabricate frame of same material and finish as grilles.
1. Recessed Frame Integral with Concrete Substrate: Inverted "T" shape, Model "VV" by
Mats Inc. or equal. Aluminum frames shall be pre-assembled at factory incorporating
welded construction for all joints.
2.5 SUPPORT SYSTEM
A. Drainage Pit Applications: Provide manufacturer's special deep-pit frame and support extrusion
system with intermediate support beams, sized and spaced as recommended by manufacturer
for indicated spans and equipped with vinyl support cushions.
2.6 MATERIALS
A. Metallic-Coated Steel Sheet: ASTM A653/A653M, Commercial Steel (CS), Type B, with A60
zinc-iron-alloy (galvannealed) coating or with G60 mill-phosphatized zinc coating; stretcher-
leveled standard of flatness; with minimum thickness indicated representing specified thickness
according to ASTM A924/A924M.

B. Extruded Aluminum: ASTM B221, Alloy 6061-T6 or Alloy 6063-T5, T6, or T52 as standard with
manufacturer.
2.7 FABRICATION
A. Shop fabricate floor grilles to greatest extent possible in sizes as indicated. Unless otherwise
indicated, provide each grille as a single unit; do not exceed manufacturer's recommended
maximum sizes for units that are removed for maintenance and cleaning. Where joints in grilles
are necessary, space symmetrically and away from normal traffic lanes.
B. Fabricate frame members in single lengths or, where frame dimensions exceed maximum
available lengths, provide minimum number of pieces possible, with hairline joints equally
spaced and pieces spliced together by straight connecting pins.
2.8 ALUMINUM FINISHES
A. Mill finish.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates and floor conditions for compliance with requirements for location, size,
minimum recess depth, and other conditions affecting installation of floor grilles and frames.
B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Install recessed floor grilles and frames to comply with manufacturer's written instructions at
locations indicated and with top of floor grilles and frames in relationship to one another and to
adjoining finished flooring as recommended by manufacturer. Set floor-grille tops at height for
most effective cleaning action. Coordinate top of floor-grille surfaces with doors that swing
across grilles to provide clearance under door.
3.3 PROTECTION
A. After completing frame installations, provide temporary filler of plywood or fiberboard in floor-
grille recesses and cover frames with plywood protective flooring. Maintain protection until
construction traffic has ended and Project is near Substantial Completion.
