The work of this section shall be included in the Fire Protection Subcontractor Sub Bid. Refer to Section 21 0001: FIRE PROTECTION FILED SUB-BID SUMMARY for additional requirements. 1.02 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS A. The Conditions of the Contract and General Requirements of the Project Manual apply to this Subcontractor, material suppliers, and all other persons furnishing labor and materials under this Section. The General Conditions, and applicable parts of Division 01 are included as part of this Section. B. Examine all Project Specifications and Drawings for requirements which affect work of this Section whether or not such work is specifically mentioned in this Section. C. Coordinate work with that of all other trades affecting or affected by work of this Section. Cooperate with such trades to assure the steady progress of all work under the Contract. D. The following definitions apply to the Drawings and Specifications: 1. Furnish: The term "furnish" is used to mean "supply and deliver to the Project Site, ready for unloading, unpacking, assembly, installation, and similar operations". 2. Install: The term "install" is used to describe operations at the Project Site including actual "unloading, unpacking, assembly, erection, piecing, anchoring, applying, working to dimension, finishing, curing, protecting, cleaning, and similar operations". 3. Provide: The term "provide" is used to mean "furnish and install, complete and ready for the intended use". 4. Installer: An "installer" is the Contractor or an entity engaged by the Contractor, either as an employee, Subcontractor, or Sub-Subcontractor for performance of a particular construction activity, including installation, erection, application, and similar operations. Installers are required to be experienced in the operations they are engaged to perform. E. When open-flame or spark producing tools such as blow torches, welding equipment, and the like are required in the process of executing the work, the General Contractor shall be notified not less than twenty four (24) hours in advance of the time that the work is to begin and the location where work is to be performed. Provide fire protective covering and maintain constant non-working fire watch where work is being performed until it is completed. 1.03 DESCRIPTION OF WORK A. Provide all labor, materials, equipment, services and accessories necessary to Design, Furnish and Install the work of this Section, complete and functional, as indicated in the Contract Documents and as specified herein. The Design shall conform to the documents and shall be subject to approval by the Architect. B. In accordance with 528 CMR 11.00, the fire protection system, including hydrants and exterior underground piping, shall be performed by a Licensed Fire Protection Sprinkler Systems Contractor. The fire protection work will start after the street tap provided by the site contractor. The Fire Protection Contractor shall own the entire water loop around the building, water hydrants and piping to them, and sprinkler service into the building. The plumbing contractor will be responsible from brining in their domestic water pipe to the building from water loop. Refer to Civil drawings for extent of this work 2. A hydraulically designed combination automatic sprinkler/standpipe system to provide 100% protection for the building as noted on the Drawings. Refer to Fire Protection Criteria on the Drawings. Prepare Working Drawings for approval of the Architect, the local authority having jurisdiction, and the owner's insurance company under stamp of an independent Massachusetts Registered Professional Fire Protection Engineer. 3. Backflow Control Device 4. Fire Department Connections 5. Pipe and Fittings 6. Zone valves assemblies. Building shall be zone by floor with no more than 50,000 SF per zone. Multiple zones will be required for the first floor and second floor. 7. Valves 8. Hangers 9. Sprinkler Heads 10. Furnishing and installation of Supervisory Switches and Controls 11. Systems Identification 12. Flushing and Testing of the interior system as provided herein. Coordinate, witness, and certify the flushing and testing of the exterior system and submit certificates. The exterior installation is provided in Division 33. 13. Drilling, Coring, Cutting & Patching of holes and openings (where the largest dimension thereof does not exceed 12 inches), for Fire Protection Piping and Equipment. All such holes require sleeves. 14. Scaffolding, Rigging, and Staging required for all Fire Protection Work. Comply with Division 01 requirements. 15. Furnishing of Access Panels 16. Smoke and Firestopping Seals and sealing of all wall penetrations as detailed on the drawings. Refer to Section 07 8413 which defines the firestopping materials and methods. 17. When open-flame or spark producing tools such as blower torches, welding equipment, and the like are required in the process of executing the work, the General Contractor shall be notified not less than twenty four hours in advance of the time that the work is to begin and the location where work is to be performed. Provide fire protective covering and maintain constant non-working fire watch through the Local Fire Department where work is being performed and until it is completed. 18. It shall be the responsibility of this division 21 0001 to provide all personnel necessary to fully coordinate with the commissioning agent. The hours of training and instruction outlined in this division 21 0001 and the Testing requirements shall be in addition to those tests and requirements outlined in section 01 9113 and required to fulfill section 01 9113 commissioning obligations. 1.02 RELATED WORK A. Installation of Access Panels: SECTION 08 3113, Respective finish section. 4. Excavation and Backfill: DIVISION 31 5. Finish Painting: SECTION 09 0007 - PAINTING and 09 0007 - INTERIOR PAINTING. 6. Wiring for Supervisory Switches, Electrical Alarm, and Flow Switches, and Power Wiring: SECTION 26 00 10 - ELECTRICAL 7. Temporary Facilities: SECTION 01 5000 - TEMPORARY FACILITIES AND CONTROLS 1.03 CODES, ORDINANCES, AND PERMITS A. Perform all work in accordance with the following Codes: 1. 780 CMR: The State Building Code. 2. 527 CMR: The Fire Prevention Regulations. 3. NFPA-13-2013 and Owner's insurance company requirements. 4. All applicable Local, State, and Federal Codes, Statutes, or Regulations. 5. Town of South Yarmouth Fire Department 6. Town of South Yarmouth Building Department. B. Obtain all permits, inspections, and approvals, from the governing authorities and pay all fees and include cost in the bid, including approvals for the cross connection control device. Provide the Owner with the cross connection permit for the device in the Owner's name. 1.04 DISCREPANCIES IN DOCUMENTS A. Where Drawings or Specifications conflict or are unclear, advise Designer in writing before Award of Contract. Otherwise, Designer's interpretation of Contract Documents shall be final, and no additional compensation shall be permitted due to discrepancies or unclarities thus resolved. B. Where Drawings or Specifications do not coincide with manufacturers' recommendations, or with applicable codes and standards, alert Designer in writing before installation. Otherwise, make changes in installed work as Designer requires within Contract Price. C. If the required material, installation, or work can be interpreted differently from drawing to drawing, or between drawings and specs, this contractor shall provide that material, installation, or work which is of the higher standard. D. It is the intent of these contract documents to have the contractor provide systems and components that are fully complete and operational and fully suitable for the intended use. There may be situations in the documents where insufficient information exists to precisely describe a certain component or subsystem, or the routing of a component. In cases such as this, where the contractor has failed to notify the Designer of the situation in accordance with the paragraph above, the contractor shall provide the specific component or subsystem with all parts necessary for the intended use, fully complete and operational, and installed in workmanlike manner either concealed or exposed per the design intent. E. In cases covered by the paragraph above, where the contractor believes he needs engineering guidance, he shall submit a sketch identifying his proposed solution and the Designer shall review, note if necessary, and approve the sketch. 1.05 MODIFICATIONS IN LAYOUT A. HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection, and Electrical Drawings are diagrammatic. They indicate general arrangements of mechanical and electrical systems and other work. They do not show all offsets required for coordination nor do they show the exact routings and locations Dennis Yarmouth Intermediate Middle School January 19, 2021 Dennis Yarmouth Regional School District 100% Construction Documents Perkins Eastman DPC, project #71011 Addendum No. 3, February 19, 2021 21 0001 FIRE PROTECTION 4 of 25 needed to coordinate with structure and other trades and to meet architectural requirements. B. In all spaces, prior to installation of visible material and equipment, including access panels, review Architectural Drawings for exact locations and where not definitely indicated, request information from Designer. C. Check Contract Drawings as well as Shop Drawings of all subcontractors to verify and coordinate spaces in which work of this Section will be installed. D. Maintain maximum headroom at all locations. All piping and associated components to be as tight to underside of structure as possible. E. Make reasonable modifications in layout and components needed to prevent conflict with work of other trades and to coordinate according to Paragraphs A, B, C, D above. Systems shall be run in a rectilinear fashion. F. Where conflicts or potential conflicts exist and engineering guidance is desired, submit sketch of proposed resolution to Designer for review and approval. 1.06 RECORD DRAWINGS A. General: Refer to SECTION 01 7700 – CLOSEOUT PROCEDURES for general requirements for maintaining as-built drawings and submitting final reproducible record documents. B. The General Contractor will provide two sets of black or blue line on white Drawings to the Fire Protection Subcontractor, one set of which shall be maintained at the site and which shall, at all times, be accurate, clear, and complete, showing the actual locations of all equipment and piping as it is being installed. The Record Drawings shall be available to the Architect/Engineer's field representative at all times. C. Provide electronic AutoCAD drawings to indicate revisions to piping size and location both exterior and interior; including locations of valves and other equipment requiring periodic maintenance or repair; actual equipment locations, dimensioned from column lines; concealed equipment, dimensioned to column line; mains and branches of piping systems, with valves and control devices located and numbered, concealed unions located, and with items requiring maintenance located. D. Include in the Record Drawings any addenda, sketches, and supplementary Drawings issued during the course of construction. E. Non-availability of Record Drawings or inaccuracies therein will postpone the final inspection until they are available. F. All valves shown on these Drawings shall be numbered with numbers corresponding to those on the valve charts. G. All costs related to the foregoing requirements shall be paid by the Fire Protection Subcontractor. 1.07 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS AND MAINTENANCE MANUALS A. Provide operating instructions to the owner's designated representative with respect to operation functions and maintenance procedures for all equipment and systems installed. At the completion of the project, turn over to the Architect four (4) complete manuals in three- ring, loose-leaf binders, containing the following: 1. Complete Shop Drawings of all equipment. 2. Operation description of all systems. 3. Names, addresses, and telephone numbers of all suppliers of the system. 4. Preventive maintenance instructions for all systems. 5. Spare parts list of all system components. 6. Valve tag chart noting location of any and all valves controlling the fire protection systems Dennis Yarmouth Intermediate Middle School January 19, 2021 Dennis Yarmouth Regional School District 100% Construction Documents Perkins Eastman DPC, project #71011 Addendum No. 3, February 19, 2021 21 0001 FIRE PROTECTION 5 of 25 including main control, main drain, auxiliary drain, drum drip, inspectors test connections and any low point drains connected to these systems. 1.08 SHOP DRAWINGS AND MATERIAL SCHEDULES A. Refer to SECTION 01 3300 – SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES for substitution of equipment and submittal of Shop Drawings. If apparatus or materials are substituted for those specified, and such substitution necessitates changes in or additional connections, piping, supports or construction, same shall be provided as the responsibility, and at the expense, of the Fire Protection Subcontractor. B. Fabrication of any material or performing of any work prior to the final approval of the Submittals will be entirely at the risk of the Subcontractor. The Subcontractor is responsible for furnishing and installing materials called for in the Contract Documents, even though these materials may have been omitted from approved Submittals. C. Submit Shop Drawings for the following materials and equipment. 1. Coordinated Working Drawings and hydraulic calculations including size, type, length, temperature rating of sprinkler heads, piping and the like. Indicate flow test results, design criteria, hydraulic reference points, diffuser and light locations. 2. Access Panels and Covers 3. Sprinkler Heads 4. Control valve assemblies. 5. Hangers and Restraints 6. Pipe, Fittings, and Appurtenances 7. Systems Identification 8. Valves 9. Fire Department Connection 10. Cross Connection Devices 1.09 COORDINATION DRAWINGS A. Before materials are purchased or Work is begun, prepare and submit to the Architect, Coordination Drawings showing the size and location of all equipment and piping lines relevant to the complete system. Ensure that these Drawings are compatible and correctly annotated and cross-referenced at their interfaces. B. Coordination Drawings are for the Contractor's and the Architect's use during Construction and shall not be construed as replacing any Shop or Record Drawings required elsewhere in these Contract Documents. C. Detailed procedures for Coordination Drawings are contained in Division 01 of these Contract Documents. 1.10 GUARANTEE A. Guarantee all work under this Section free from defects in workmanship or materials for a period of one (1) year from the date of final acceptance of the building, as set forth in the Contract. B. Replace any such defective work developing during this period, unless such defects are clearly the result of bad usage of equipment by others. Where such defective work results in damage to work of other Sections of the Specifications, restore such work to its original condition by mechanics skilled in the affected trade. 1.11 DRAWINGS Dennis Yarmouth Intermediate Middle School January 19, 2021 Dennis Yarmouth Regional School District 100% Construction Documents Perkins Eastman DPC, project #71011 Addendum No. 3, February 19, 2021 21 0001 FIRE PROTECTION 6 of 25 A. All work shown on the Drawings is intended to be approximately correct to scale but shall be taken in a sense as diagrammatic. Sizes of pipes and general method of running them are shown, but it is not intended to show every offset and fitting. To carry out the true intent and purpose of the plans, furnish all necessary parts to make a complete working system ready for use. B. The Drawings and Specifications are intended to supplement each other so that any details shown on the Drawings and not mentioned in the Specifications, or vice-versa, shall be executed the same as if mentioned in the Specifications and shown on the Drawings. C. Refer to the Architectural, Structural, and Other Mechanical and Electrical Drawings which indicate the construction in which this work shall be installed. Locations shown on the plans shall be checked against the general and detailed drawings of the construction proper. All measurements must be taken at the building. 1.12 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION A. The building is to be 100% sprinklered with an automatic sprinkler system. The system shall be designed in accordance with NFPA-13-2013. B. Building is to be 100% sprinklered including all Closets, all Electric Rooms, and Emergency Electric Rooms. The Elevator Shaft and Machine rooms are not sprinklered. C. Refer to Fire Protection Criteria on the Drawings. Conform to the zoning shown on the plans. D. Locations of sprinkler heads are shown in some of the areas to be sprinklered only to establish the patterns and design intent. Major equipment and runs of piping may also be shown. Refer to reflected ceiling plan for location of all sprinkler heads. All sprinkler heads are to be installed dead center of tile. 1.13 ALARM FACILITIES A. Furnish and install all Supervisory Switches, Flow Switches, Pressure Switches, and other Alarm Devices. Install all such devices on the piping and coordinate with the Electrical Subcontractor who shall wire all such devices to the Fire Alarm System. Every shutoff valve installed on this project shall have a supervisory trouble switch wired to the Fire Alarm Panel. 1.14 PIPE MARKER IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM A. Mark all fire mains installed under this Section with a marking system in basic colors conforming to those specified in ANSI/ASME A-13.1. Markings shall indicate pipe content and direction of flow. Apply markers every 20 feet on center on piping which is exposed in mechanical or storage areas and above suspended accessible ceilings. Also, apply at all access panels, valves, tee joints, alarms, and/or controls. B. Adhesive system may be used throughout except at the mechanical rooms in which case markings shall be painted on. 1.15 VALVE TAGS A. All valves installed in the Fire Protection Contract shall be tagged. Tags shall be secured to valves with chain link and shall be marked with 3/4 inch high letters as to function. All valve tags shall indicate the Fire Zone. 1.16 IDENTIFICATION SIGNS A. All equipment and systems shall be identified with signs furnished and attached in accordance with NFPA 13. The following water supply data is included as information available to bidders. B. A hydrant flow test was performed on 12-21-20 C. Flow Test Results: 1. Static Pressure = 68 2. Residual Pressure = 65 3. Flow = 1126 1.18 BREAKDOWN A. Submit a breakdown of the contract price to aid the Architect in determining the value of the work installed as the job progresses. B. No requisition will be approved until the breakdown is delivered to the Architect. PART 2 – PRODUCTS 2.01 PIPE AND FITTINGS A. Piping shall meet applicable ANSI or ASTM standards requirements and shall have manufacturer's name and standard marked on each length. Unless specified otherwise below, joints shall meet applicable ANSI and ASTM standards requirements. Where ANSI and ASTM standard does not exist, joints and fittings shall bear UL listing and FM approval symbols. B. Underground fire protection service piping shall be ductile-iron thickness class 52, ANSI A21-51 with cement lining per ANSI A21.4. Fittings shall be ductile-iron 250 psi rating per ANSI A21.10 with cement lining per ANSI A21.4. Pipe Joints shall be push-on ANSI A21.11 with retainer glands and thrust blocks. All materials and installation shall conform to NFPA 24 as the minimum. C. Piping for all wet pipe automatic standpipe and fire sprinkler systems 2" and smaller shall be Schedule 40 black steel, 2-1/2" and larger shall be Schedule 10 Black Steel. 1. Schedule 10 black steel pipe with Victaulic Installation Ready grooved fittings may be used as an alternate on 2-1/2” and down piping. Manufactured by Victaulic, Style 101, 102 & 103 and style 104 nipples with full housing, pre-lubricated grade-E EPDM Type A gaskets. (No substitutions allowed when utilizing this method). D. Piping for all dry pipe and/or pre-action fire sprinkler systems regardless of size shall be Schedule 40 galvanized steel. Fittings for all dry pipe and/or pre-action fire sprinkler systems regardless of size and type shall be fully galvanized. E. Piping for use with grooved end fittings shall be roll grooved without metal removal or as per manufacture requirements. F. Fittings for grooved end steel pipe shall be cast of ductile iron conforming to ASTM A-536 or malleable iron conforming to ASTM A-47, or forged steel conforming to ASTM A-234 (A-106, Gr. B), with grooved or shouldered ends for direct connection into grooved piping systems with steel pipe and shall be UL listed and FM approved. Provide flush seal gaskets on dry pipe and/or pre-action system piping. 1. Rigid Type: Basis of design: “Installation Ready” rigid joints shall be Victaulic FireLock® EZ Style 009H [cULus, FM] and 107N [cULus], in Dennis Yarmouth Intermediate Middle School January 19, 2021 Dennis Yarmouth Regional School District 100% Construction Documents Perkins Eastman DPC, project #71011 Addendum No. 3, February 19, 2021 21 0001 FIRE PROTECTION 8 of 25 sizes 1-1/4”(DN32) through 12” (DN300) sizes. Designed for direct “stab” installation onto grooved pipe without prior disassembly of the coupling. Victaulic Style 009N. a. Housings shall be cast with offsetting, angle-pattern bolt pads to provide system rigidity and support and hanging in accordance with NFPA 13. b. Rigid couplings shall require visual pad-to-pad verification of complete installation. Tongue and recess type couplings which require the use of a torque wrench to achieve the exact required gap between housings are not permitted. 2. Or engineer approved equal. 3. Flexible Type: Use in seismic areas where required by NFPA 13. a. Basis of design: “Installation Ready” flexible joints shall be Victaulic Style 177N QuickVic™ [cULus, FM], in sizes 2”(DN50) through 8”(DN200), which shall be designed for direct “stab” installation onto grooved pipe without prior disassembly of the coupling. . b. Basis of design: Standard flexible couplings shall be Victaulic Style 77 [UL, ULC, FM]. 4. Or engineer approved equal. G. Mechanical tee type hole-cut branch connections, with locating collar engaging into hole and with standard pressure responsive gaskets and nuts and bolts; or outlet couplings, with outlets grooved or threaded with standard pressure responsive gaskets and bolts and nuts shall be UL listed and FM approved, and rated for 500 psi on piping 3" and larger, and 300 psi on piping under 3" in size and shall all be of one manufacture. No strap, snap and or one bolt outlet fittings will be permitted. 1. Basis of design: Branch reductions on 2"(DN50) through 8"(DN200) header piping. Bolted branch outlets shall be manufactured from ductile iron conforming to ASTM A-536, Grade 65-45-12, with synthetic rubber gasket, and heat treated carbon steel zinc plated bolts and nuts conforming to physical properties of ASTM A-183. Victaulic Style 920 / 920N. [UL, ULC, FM] 2. Or engineer approved equal. 3. Basis of design: Header connections for sprinklers, drop nipples, sprigs, gauges, and drains on 1-1/4” through 2-1/2” header piping. Outlets shall be manufactured from ductile iron conforming to ASTM A-536, Grade 65- 45-12, with synthetic rubber gasket, and heat treated carbon steel zinc plated bolts and nuts conforming to physical properties of ASTM A-183. Victaulic FireLock Outlet Tee Style 922. [UL, ULC, FM] 4. Or engineer approved equal. H. Standard cast iron black (CIB) sprinkler pattern screwed fittings shall be used on all piping 2" and smaller and may be used on larger sizes. 1. Schedule 10 black steel pipe with Victaulic Installation Ready grooved fittings may be used as an alternate on 2-1/2” and down piping. Manufactured by Victaulic, Style 101, 102 & 103 and style 104 nipples with full housing, pre-lubricated grade-E EPDM Type A gaskets. (No substitutions allowed when utilizing this method). 2. Installation-Ready™ Fittings for Fire Protection Systems: a. Fittings shall consist of a ductile iron housing conforming to ASTM A-536, Grade 65-45-12, with Installation-Ready™ ends, [orange enamel coated] [red enamel coated] [galvanized]. Fittings complete with prelubricated Grade “E” EPDM Type ‘A’ gasket; and ASTM A449 electroplated steel bolts and nuts. System shall be UL listed for a working pressure of 300 psi (2065 kPa) and FM approved for working pressure 365 psi (2517kPa). 1) Fittings shall have a shorter center-to-end dimensions for installation in tight spaces. 2) Fittings are rigid, for direct stab installation without field disassembly. 3) Installation-Ready™ Fittings shall be Victaulic FireLock® Style 101, Style 102, and style 103, which shall be designed for direct “stab” installation onto grooved pipe without prior disassembly of the fitting. 4) Fittings shall require visual pad-to-pad verification of complete installation. 5) Fitting Gaskets: Pressure-responsive, synthetic rubber listed for use with the housing. 3. No substitutions allowed when utilizing this method. I. All pipe, fittings, valves, devices and associated appurtenances shall be rated for pressures that may be developed. J. Bushings shall not be permitted where fittings of required sizes are manufactured. Care shall be taken in the design of this work to avoid piping arrangements that would require bushings. K. All close and shoulder nipples shall be of corresponding materials as the pipe and shall be extra heavy pattern. L. All pipe and fittings exposed to the weather shall be fully galvanized regardless of size and/or type. M. All water based suppression system piping shall be pitched back to toward the point of supply regardless of any requirements of any Codes and/or Standards and/or any references to the contrary. 2.02 VALVES A. With the exception of drain and trim valves, all valves shall be UL listed and FM approved and from one manufacturer. B. Shut-off and/or control valves shall be: 1. Outside screw and yoke valve. Cast iron body, bronze mounted, flanged ends, resilient wedge, 175 psi, 2 1/2" in size and up. All bronze, 175 psi, resilient wedge, threaded ends, 2" and under in size both to be electrically supervised, or 2. All valves exposed to the weather shall be fully protected to prevent corrosion regardless of size and/or type. 2.03 HANGERS AND SUPPORTS A. Hangers shall be approved adjustable clip and clevis pattern supported from structural steel and/or concrete floors above by UL listed and FM approved type clamps and supports. Spacing and hanger rod size shall be as outlined in the appropriate NFPA Standard as the minimum. All hanger components shall meet ASTM B633, SC1 or SC3 as a minimum for corrosion resistance. B. All hangers, supports, clamps and rods shall be corrosion resistant (stainless steel or electro-galvanized). C. Piping at all equipment and control valves shall be supported to prevent strains or distortions in the hangers, connected equipment and control valves. Piping at equipment shall be supported to allow for removal of equipment, valves and accessories with a minimum of dismantling and without requiring additional support after these items are removed. D. All piping installed under this section of the specification shall be independently supported from the building structure steel and/or concrete decks and not from the piping, roof decks, ductwork, rack hangers or conduit of this and/or any other trades. All supplementary steel, including factory fabricated channels, required to meet the requirements specified herein shall be furnished and installed by the Fire Protection Contractor. E. "C" clamps for hangers on pipes will not be permitted unless installed with safety straps and lock nuts. F. All vertical drops and run out pipes shall be supported by split-ring extension type hangers. G. Pipe supports, vertical and horizontal, shall not bear on sleeves. H. Protection of piping from earthquakes (seismic activity) shall be provided and installed in accordance with the State Building Code and NFPA 13. I. The Fire Protection Contractor shall provide and install any devices required to interface with the building fire alarm system. 2.06 FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION A. Storz: Fire Department connection shall be Croker #6362, or equal, 4” Storz (4x4), straight pattern large diameter chrome plated aluminum adapter connection with chrome plate name plate branded "Combination Sprinkler and Standpipe System.” B. In main line to Fire Department connection, provide approved check valve installed in horizontal position. Valve monitor switches, sprinkler flow switches, water pressure alarm, low water supply pressure and low air supply pressure switches shall be as manufactured by Potter Electric Signal Company, or equal, and shall be furnished and installed by this Contractor, but wired by the Electrical Contractor. All switches to be UL Listed and FM approved. 1. Electrical supervisory switches, or "tamper switches" with two sets of double throw, single pole contacts. 2. Water flow alarm devices, vane type, with two sets of double throw, single pole contacts and with 90 second time delay mechanism. 3. Low pressure supervisory switches with two sets of double throw, single pole contacts with adequate pressure differential to prevent false operation. 4. Electric alarm bell shall be for weatherproof operation and shall be 8". B. The Fire Protection Contractor shall prepare a typewritten list of all equipment which must connect to the building fire alarm and electrical systems. This list shall be used to coordinate the number and locations of devices to which the Electrical (Fire Alarm) Contractor shall make connections. This list shall include the electrical characteristics of each piece of equipment. This is to be done to insure items that the Fire Protection Contractor is to provide are compatible with all building electrical and fire alarm system requirements. Submit this list to the Engineer for review and coordination prior to purchasing any of this equipment. 2.09 SPRINKLER HEADS AND CABINETS A. All sprinkler heads shall be listed by Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., and approved by Factory Mutual. All sprinkler heads and associated devices are to be as manufactured by the Viking Corporation, or equal. All sprinkler heads are to be Bellville spring seal type. Sprinkler relying on O-ring type seals shall not be used. All sprinkler heads are to be fusible element type sprinklers. B. All sprinkler heads shall be provided and installed to conform to manufacturer's listing. C. All sprinkler heads shall be as scheduled on the drawings and must be completely coordinated with a final reflected ceiling plan and locations to arrive at a suitable pattern consistent with proper sprinkler head coverage. D. All sprinkler heads in mechanical rooms, storage areas and closets shall have sprinkler guards. All heads within 7' - 0" of the floor in areas without suspended ceilings shall have sprinkler guards. Finish to be as follows: 1. All sprinklers in public areas and stairs to be chrome plated. 2. All sprinklers in mechanical rooms may be standard brass finish. F. Pendant sprinkler heads in areas with ceilings shall be Viking QR fusible element concealed sprinklers as manufactured by the Viking Corporation, or equal, as indicated on the Fire Protection drawings. All sprinkler ceiling plates for concealed sprinklers to be white unless otherwise required by the Architect. G. Sprinkler heads in the Gym, Stairways and Exposed Ceiling Locker Rooms shall have sprinkler cages. H. Provide quick response type fire sprinklers in areas where quick response type sprinklers are required by NFPA Standards. I. In addition to the sprinkler heads required, furnish spare heads of each type and of each temperature rating used quantity to be per NFPA 13. 1. 6 spare sprinklers (never fewer than 6) shall be maintained on premises so that any sprinklers that have operated or been damaged in any way can be replaced promptly. 2. The spare sprinklers shall be kept in a cabinet located where the temperature at no time will exceed 100F. 3. Spare dry sprinklers are not required as long as means of putting the system back in service are furnished. 4. Stock of spare sprinklers shall be as per NFPA 13. J. Heads shall be placed in a baked enamel steel cabinet mounted as directed by the Engineer and Architect. Cabinet shall contain two (2) socket wrenches and shall be of adequate size to hold required head quantity. K. In lieu of rigid pipe offsets or return bends for sprinkler drops, the Victaulic VicFlex™ Multiple-Use Flexible Stainless Steel Sprinkler Drop System [with captured coupling Style 108] may be used to locate sprinklers by final finished ceiling tiles and walls. The drop system shall consist of a braided type 304 stainless steel flexible tube, zinc plated steel Male threaded nipple or Victaulic FireLock IGS Groove Style 108 coupling for connection to branch-line piping, and a zinc plated steel reducer with a female thread for connection to the sprinkler head. 1. Captured Coupling IGS Groove Style 108: Single-bolt, consisting of two ductile iron housings, Grade E “EPDM” gasket, and a zinc electroplated steel bolt and nut conforming to ASTM A449. The drop shall include; AH2 or AH2-CC braided hose with a bend radius to 2” to allow for proper installation in confined spaces. The hose shall be listed for [(4) bends at 31” length] [(5) bends at 36” length] [(8) bends at 48” length] [(10) bends at 60” length] [(12) bends at 72” length]. Union joints shall be provided for ease of installation. The flexible drop shall attach to the ceiling grid using a one-piece open gate Series AB1 or AB2 bracket. The bracket shall allow installation before the ceiling tile is in place. All hoses shall be factory-pressure tested to 400 psi. (2760 kPa). b. AB6 Bracket Assembly, for use in cold storage applications with Victaulic Model V36 dry sprinklers. c. Approvals: 1) FM-1637 2) UL 2443 Refer to the Victaulic I-VICFLEX installation manual and the Victaulic VicFlex™ Design Guide, as shown in product submittal 10.85 to ensure proper installation. 2. All flexible drop systems shall have a 1” hose diameter or be engineer approved equal. L. In lieu of rigid connections to dry sprinkler heads, a Victaulic VicFlex™ dry sprinkler, Model VS1, may be used. The sprinkler shall provide a vertical or horizontal flexible connection with a bend radius to 2”, and allow for up to 4 bends. 1. The sprinkler body shall be die cast brass with brass deflector, supplied [(VC- 250) (chrome plated) (white) (flat-black) coated] [plain brass], and glass bulb with glycerin solution. The product shall consist of a braided type 300 stainless steel flexible hose with a swivel type branch line threaded connection, EPDM gasket seal, with PTFE-coated Beryllium Nickel and stainless-steel spring-seal assembly. The bracket shall be [open gate] [metal strap] to provide for sprinkler placement and alignment. The flexible dry sprinkler and bracket system is UL listed for sprinkler services to 175 psi (1206 kPa). 2. No substitutions allowed when utilizing this method. 2.10 ACCESS DOORS AND PANELS A. Refer to Section 08 31 13 for additional information. B. Furnish, for installation by the designated Trade as determined by the General Contractor, all access doors in locations wherever valves and/or other devices are installed behind gypsum wallboard or masonry walls or ceilings and where such devices would be inaccessible for inspection, maintenance or servicing. Access doors and panels shall be a minimum of 12" by 12" and shall be sized to suit the access requirement to service the equipment and located in a manner approved by the Architect and to meet requirements specified here and elsewhere, for specific applications. C. Access panels shall be specifically designed for each type of wall, ceiling finish and construction with which they are used. D. Particular attention shall be exercised in the selection of panels for masonry walls in order that frame sizes used, will match the courses of brick or block. Where possible, access panels shall be located in closets, storage rooms and/or other non-public areas and shall be constructed in a workmanlike manner. Panels shall be positioned so that equipment can be easily reached. Where access panels are required in corridors, lobbies or other habitable areas, they will be located as directed by the Architect. E. Panels shall be constructed of steel with primer coat of rust inhibitive paint and shall have continuous piano hinge, as manufactured by Inland Steel Products Milcor, Walsh-Hannon or approved equal. Obtain receipt of key delivery and submit to Architect for record. F. Where installed at fire rated walls or ceilings, access panels shall be of fire-resistive construction with mineral core panel faced both sides and edges with 20 gauge sheet steel, and shall bear the UL label required to meet the fire rating of the wall. G. Where installed in surfaces finished with ceramic tile or glazed coatings, access panels shall be of stainless steel with No. 4 finish. H. Where installed in acoustical ceilings, access panels shall be of type which will accept adhesive mounted acoustical panels flush with surrounding surfaces. Coordinate size and type of panel with Acoustical Ceiling Trade. I. Where installed in gypsum wallboard walls or ceilings, access panels shall be of type with 14 gauge face panels and 16 gauge frames equipped with integral perforated, textured metal casing bead edge which will receive drywall compound for flush finishing. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 COOPERATION AND WORK PROGRESS A. The Fire Protection work shall be carried on under the usual construction conditions, in conjunction with all other work at the site. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall cooperate with the Architect, General Contractor, all other Subcontractors and equipment suppliers working at the site. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall coordinate the work and proceed in a manner so as not to delay the progress of the project. B. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall coordinate his work with the progress of the building and other Trades so that he will complete his work as soon as conditions permit and such that interruptions of the building functions will be at a minimum. Any overtime hours worked or additional costs incurred due to lack of or improper coordination with other Trades or the Owner by the Fire Protection Subcontractor, shall be assumed by him without any additional cost to the Owner. C. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall furnish information on all equipment that is furnished under this Section but installed under another Section to the installing Subcontractor as specified herein. D. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall provide all materials, equipment and workmanship to provide for adequate protection of all Fire Protection equipment during the course of construction of the project. This shall also include protection from moisture and all foreign matter. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall also be responsible for damage which he causes to the work of other Trades, and he shall remedy such injury at his own expense. E. Waste materials shall be removed promptly from the premises. All material and equipment stored on the premises shall be kept in a neat and orderly fashion. Material or equipment shall not be stored where exposed to the weather. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall be responsible for the security, safekeeping and damages, including acts of vandalism, of all material and equipment stored at the job site. F. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall be responsible for unloading all Fire Protection equipment and materials delivered to the site. Consult with the General Contractor for hoisting/crane requirements. During construction of the building, the Fire Protection Subcontractor shall provide additional protection against moisture, dust accumulation and physical damage of the main service and distribution equipment. This shall include furnishing and installing temporary heaters within these units, as approved, to evaporate excessive moisture and ventilate it from the room, as may be required. G. It shall be the responsibility of the Fire Protection Subcontractor to coordinate the delivery of the Fire Protection equipment to the project prior to the time installation of equipment will be required; but he shall also make sure such equipment is not delivered too far in advance of such required installation, to ensure that possible damage and deterioration of such equipment will not occur. Such equipment stored for an excessively long period of time (as determined in the opinion of the Architect) on the project site prior to installation may be subject to rejection by the Architect. H. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall erect and maintain, at all times, necessary safeguards for the protection of life and property of the Owner, Workmen, Staff and the Public. I. Prior to installation, the Fire Protection Subcontractor has the responsibility to coordinate the exact mounting arrangement and location of Fire Protection equipment to allow proper space requirements as indicated in the NEC. Particular attention shall be given in the field to group installations. If it is questionable that sufficient space, conflict with the work of other Subcontractors, architectural or structural obstructions will result in an arrangement which will prevent proper access, operation or maintenance of the indicated equipment, the Fire Protection Subcontractor shall immediately notify the Contractor and not proceed with this part of the Contract work until definite instructions have been given to him by the Architect. J. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall not allow any equipment or piping foreign to the Fire Protection installation to be installed or pass through any room such as electric rooms, electric closets, telephone or data closets unless serving the room. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall notify the General Contractor and Architect in writing of such violations and request immediate removal. K. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall obtain from the Electrical, Fire Alarm, Plumbing and HVAC Subcontractors copies of all shop drawing prints showing the ductwork and piping installation as they will be put in place on the project. These drawings shall be thoroughly checked by the Fire Protection Subcontractor and the routing of all piping and the installation of all Fire Protection equipment shall be coordinated with the ductwork and piping so as to prevent any installation conflict. Such coordination shall be done prior to roughing in of any Fire Protection equipment. L. Location of all sprinklers, piping, hangers and other devices shall be verified with the Architect prior to roughing. Refer to details and wall elevations on the Architectural drawings. Mounting heights indicated on these drawings and/or specific dimensional information given to the Fire Protection Subcontractor by the Architect shall take precedence over such information indicated on the Fire Protection drawings. M. Refer to all other drawings associated with this project. Any and all equipment which require a Fire Protection system connection whether indicated on the Fire Protection drawings or not, shall be furnished and installed as directed by the Architect. N. Refer to the Architectural drawings for areas in which the concrete slab is poured on grade. Penetration of the membrane, if required, shall only be made when specifically allowed by the Architect, and shall be made only at locations directed by the Architect. 3.02 INSTALLATION A. General 1. Unless specifically noted or indicated otherwise, all equipment and material specified in Division 15300 of this specification or indicated on the drawings shall be installed under this Contract whether or not specifically itemized herein. This Section covers particular installation methods and requirements peculiar to certain items and classes or material and equipment. 2. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall obtain detailed information from manufacturers of equipment as to proper methods of installation. 3. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall obtain final roughing dimensions and other information as needed for complete installation of items furnished under other Sections or furnished by the Owner. 4. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall keep fully informed of size, shape and position of openings required for material and equipment provided under this and other Sections. Ensure that openings required for work of this Section are coordinated with work of other Sections. Provide cutting and patching as necessary. 5. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall coordinate the utility service installations with Local Authorities, Owner’s Insurer, the City Building Department and the City Fire Department. 6. All miscellaneous hardware and support accessories, including support rods, nuts, bolts, screws and other such items, shall be of a galvanized or cadmium plated finish or of another approved rust-inhibiting coating. 3.03 MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP A. All materials and equipment shall be new and unused and shall meet requirements of the latest Standards of NFPA, FM Global, ASTM, ANSI and IEEE. Equipment shall have components required or recommended by OSHA, applicable NFPA documents and shall be UL listed and labeled and FM Global approved where required. B. Despite references in the specifications or on the drawings to materials or pieces of equipment by name, make or catalog number, such references shall be interpreted as establishing standards of quality for materials and performance. C. Finish of materials, components and equipment shall not be less than Industry good practice. When material or equipment is visible or subject to corrosive or atmospheric conditions, the finish shall be as approved by the Architect. D. Provide proper access to material or equipment that requires inspection, replacement, repair or service. If proper access cannot be provided, confer with the Architect as to the best method of approach to minimize effects of reduced access. All work shall be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner and shall be done in accordance with all Local and State Codes. F. The Owner will not be responsible for material, equipment or the installation of same before testing and acceptance. 3.04 CLEANING A. This Section of the specifications shall include the cleaning of all equipment on a day-to- day basis and final cleaning of all Fire Protection equipment prior to turning building over to the Owner. All necessary cleaning referred to herein shall be cleaned to the satisfaction of the Architect. B. Fire Protection Equipment 1. All Fire Protection equipment shall be completely cleaned and dried inside and out prior to initial filling and/or start up. 2. Cleaning shall consist of cleaning of all pipe, fittings, hangers and devices. After cleaning is complete, all equipment shall be wiped down. If equipment is wet or contains moisture, it shall be thoroughly dried and inspected by the manufacturer's representative before filling and/or start up. 3.05 FINAL INSPECTION A. When all Fire Protection work on the project has been completed and is ready for final inspection, such an inspection shall be made. At this time, and in addition to all other requirements in the Contract Documents, the Fire Protection Subcontractor, for the work under this Contract, shall demonstrate that the requirements of these specifications have been met to the Architect's satisfaction. 3.06 SHOP DRAWING CHECKLIST A. The following is a checklist of job specific items that shall be submitted as Shop Drawings by the Fire Protection Contractor for review and approval by Engineer, Architect and Owner. B. The shop drawing submittals shall contain all information as stated below AND as stated in each specification section. C. The following list is not all inclusive, the Fire Protection subcontractor shall be responsible to submit all required shop drawings for all materials that will be installed in the project: 1. Firestopping, fire-proofing , smoke stopping and waterproofing for all Fire Protection piping and equipment where required. 2. Hangers, supports, mechanical channels and all appurtances where required for installation of Fire Protection equipment. 3. Seismic Restraints. 4. Underground pipe connections / piping / fittings / devices. 5. Materials and equipment for complete automatic wet pipe fire sprinkler systems. 6. Materials and equipment for complete automatic dry pipe fire sprinkler systems. 7. Materials and equipment for complete automatic wet standpipe system. 8. Materials and equipment for complete automatic fire pump system. 9. Automatic sprinkler heads. 10. Sprinkler accessories. Fire stopping and smoke stopping, q. Access panels. s. Valve tags, pipe identification. 3.07 VERIFYING CONDITIONS A. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall verify all conditions and take all measurements in the field to insure that all work will fit actual conditions. Field corrections to fabricated work and adjustments to adjacent work where required for the proper installation of the work will be subject to the Architect's approval. Such corrections and adjustments will be permitted only when they will not be detrimental to the appearance and function of all the work. 3.08 TESTING AND INSPECTION A. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall obtain and pay for all the inspection and tests required for this Section of the work. Defects discovered in work, materials and/or equipment shall be replaced at no cost to the Owner, and the inspection and testing shall be repeated. When work is completed, the Fire Protection Contractor shall furnish all Certificates of Inspection and Approval to the Engineer and Owner before final payment of the Contract will be allowed. B. Test sprinkler and standpipe piping and make watertight before painting and before concealment. Make partial tests during the progress of the work. Test pre-action systems detection systems and other control systems to assure that all components are performing as an acceptable, approved system. Make partial tests during the progress of the work. All tests shall be witnessed by the Owner's representative, Authorities Having Jurisdiction and a representative of the Engineer. C. Standpipe and sprinkler system shall be tested to a hydrostatic test of 200 psi for two (2) hours in accordance with NFPA 13 as a minimum testing requirement. D. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall, with the parties noted herein, establish procedures to witness testing that are acceptable to the parties noted herein. All parties noted herein shall be notified in writing of the accepted testing procedure prior to any testing. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall notify parties designated to witness testing at least 48 hours in advance of scheduled testing. E. Conditions requiring testing in excess of the minimum requirements noted herein shall be performed in accordance with NFPA Standards and FM Data Sheets and the requirements of the Authorities Having Jurisdiction. F. Should the Owner, Architect, Engineer or any Authority Having Jurisdiction require, the Fire Protection Subcontractor shall provide factory trained, manufactures authorized representatives to perform testing on any equipment and/or devices that may be an integral part of this specification. G. Dispose of test water and wastes after tests are complete, in a manner satisfactory to Local Authorities. H. Furnish to the Architect and Engineer completely executed test certificates with signatures of those required to witness testing. Test certificate forms shall follow NFPA and FM formats as a minimum requirement. I. The Fire Protection Subcontractor for the work shall give all necessary notices, obtain and pay for all permits, pay all taxes, fees and other costs in connection with his work; file for necessary approvals with the jurisdiction under which the work is to be performed. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall obtain all Certificates of Inspection for his work and deliver same to the Architect and Engineer before request for acceptance of his portion of work is made and before final payment. All certificates and inspections shall be in accordance with NFPA Standards and FM Data Sheets as a minimum for all the fire protection work installed. J. All electrical detection and control systems, alarm devices and other control connections to other systems are to be tested in accordance with the appropriate NFPA Standards and FM Data Sheets and adjusted in conjunction with the appropriate Subcontractors (Electrical/Fire Alarm and HVAC). Testing or re-testing and adjustment of these systems and devices shall be at no additional cost to the Owner. Testing and adjustment shall be required until these systems and devices are performing as an integral part of the total fire protection system as specified in the Fire Protection Construction Documents Narrative. K. Care shall be exercised in placing the standpipe and all types of sprinkler systems in operation and/or introducing high pressure water into the fire sprinkler and/or standpipe piping systems. Open valves slowly and maintain watch for leaks in all systems for minimum of one (1) entire work day. Any leaks developed shall be repaired under this Contract, at no extra cost to the Owner. The following Contractor Certificate of Completion sheet shall be copied on to the Contractor's letterhead, filled out, Singed by the Licensed Permit Holder and sealed by an Authorized Officer of the Corporation then submitted to the Architect for Final Certificate of Occupancy. This is per 780 CMR 107.6.3. SUBCONTRACTOR’S CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION PROJECT PERMIT NO. Before nameplates and markers are applied, the equipment and piping shall be cleaned and painted. B. Name plate shall be made of black surface, white core laminated Bakelite with 1” high indented letters. Nameplates shall be minimum 5” long by 3” wide and bear the equipment name as designated in the specifications. The identification of piping shall be coordinated with the Owner and comply with OSHA and ANSI A13.1 Standards for the identification of systems. Obtain approval of Architect prior to installation. The letter size and background color shall conform to the ANSI Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems. The pipe markers shall be installed on the apparatus in full view and shall be a color that is in sharp contrast with the background. Color coding to be in accordance with the standards outlined in the American Hospital Association latest publication. O. Piping systems shall be identified with approved snap-on covers designating services and direction of flow. Location of identification covers shall be near access panels wherever possible on both sides of valves. The markers shall be as manufactured by W.H. Brady Company, Westline Products, Seton Nameplate Company or approved equal. 3.11 CORE DRILLING A. All core drilling up to and including 6” in size required for the installation of the plumbing systems is to be done by the Fire Protection Subcontractor. Contractor is to carry all costs for core drilling. The General Contractor will not be responsible for any circular penetrations up to and including 12” diameter in size required for the proper installation of the plumbing systems. Locate all required openings and prior to coring any, coordinate the opening with the General Contractor and all other trades. Thoroughly investigate the existing conditions in the vicinity of the required opening prior to coring. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall be responsible for damages to the building and its systems from the coring operations. Disturbances from coring shall be kept to a minimum. 3.12 VALVE TAGS AND CHARTS A. Provide neat circular brass valve tags of at least 1 ½” in diameter, attached with brass hook to each valve stem or handle as determined by Architect. Stamp on these valve tags, in letters as large as practical, the number of the valve and the service, such as “FP”, “SP”, “D”, for fire protection, standpipe and dry pipe. The numbers of each service shall be consecutive. Obtain approval of Architect prior to installation. B. All valves on equipment shall be numbered by 3” red metal discs with 2” high white numbers secured to stem of valves by means of brass hooks or small link brass chain. C. These numbers shall correspond to numbers indicated for valves on the Record Drawings and on (2) printed detailed lists. These printed lists shall state the numbers and locations of each valve and the equipment or system which it controls and other necessary information such as requiring the opening or closing of another valve or valves when any one valve is to be opened and closed. D. These printed lists shall be prepared in form to meet approval of the Architect and shall be framed under glass. Provide valve lists in booklet form also and submit (8) copies to the Architects. E. Tag numbers shall correspond to numbers indicated for valves on the record drawings and on three printed detailed lists. These printed lists shall state the number and location of each valve and the area which it controls and other necessary information, such as requiring the opening or closing of another valve or valves, when anyone valve is to be opened or closed. F. Valve charts shall include Fire Protection Subcontractor name and phone number, date of chart, name and telephone number of Architectural Firm, Consulting Mechanical Engineering Firm and the Owner’s Representative. 3.15 TERMINATION OF PIPING WITHIN BUILDING A. Fire protection water service piping shall be terminated within the building with a flanged end piece, as detailed on the drawings. The flange shall be set square, level and plumb. Uni-flanges or similar devices are prohibited. B. Piping passing through foundation walls and floor slabs shall pass through these surfaces square to the surfaces and plumb to the building. C. Service entrances into the building will be restrained as shown on the details on the drawings, for the developed thrust generated from the water pressure present END OF SECTION
