Poured in Place Play Surfacing 2. No tile surfacing will be accepted. Only poured in place surfacing will be approved. 1.2 REFERENCES A. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM): 1. Critical Height: Standard measure of shock attenuation. According to CPSC No. 325, this means "the fall height below which a life-threatening head injury would not be expected to occur." B. SBR: Styrene-butadiene rubber. 1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Impact Attenuation: According to ASTM F 1292. B. Accessibility of Surface Systems: According to ASTM F 1951. C. Minimum Characteristics for Organic Loose-Fill Surfaces: According to ASTM F 2075. 1.5 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated including installation instructions, standard color chart and filter fabric. B. Shop Drawings: Show the following: 1. Installation details for all surfacing materials and accessories. 2. Colors and pattern of surfaces. 3. Location of wear mats in organic loose-fill surfaces. 4. Location of drainage accessories. C. Samples for Initial Selection: For each type of playground surface system indicated. 1. Include similar Samples of playground surface system and accessories involving color selection. 2. Samples of 9” x 9” minimum for the poured in place playground surfacing. D. Samples for Verification: For each type of playground surface system indicated. 1. Minimum 1-quart loose-fill surface sealed in a container. E. Qualification Data: 1. Manufacturer approved installer certification 2. Testing agency qualifications F. Material Test Reports: For the following, from a qualified testing agency, indicating compliance with requirements: 1. Unitary synthetic seamless surface. 2. Organic loose-fill surface. 3. Inorganic loose-fill surface. G. Material Certificates: For each playground surface system product, signed by manufacturers. H. Field quality-control test reports. Maintenance Data: For playground surface system to include in maintenance manuals. J. Warranty: 10-year warranty. K. Provide documentation from the manufacturer that demonstrates surfaces have an initial solar reflectance (SR) value of 0.33 or 3-year aged SR value of at least 0.28. L. LEED Submittals: 1. Provide manufacturers’ product documentation that includes recycled content claims for the products contributing towards compliance. Claims must conform to the definition in ISO 14021-1999, Environmental Labels and Declarations, Self-Declared Environmental Claims. 2. Complete "LEED Materials Documentation Sheet" with MRc3 Option 2 information for products with recycled content installed in the building. 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: An employer of workers trained and approved by manufacturer. Installer shall have at least five (5) years of experience and at least ten (10) completed projects located in New England installing playground surfacing materials. B. Testing Agency Qualifications: An independent agency qualified according to ANSI Z34.1 for testing indicated. C. Source Limitations: Obtain playground surface system materials, including primers and binders, through one source from a single manufacturer. 1. Provide secondary materials including adhesives, primers, geosynthetics, and repair materials of type and from source recommended by manufacturer of playground surface system materials. 1.7 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Weather Limitations: Proceed with installation only when existing and forecasted weather conditions permit playground surface system installation to be performed according to manufacturers' written instructions and warranty requirements. B. When the ambient air temperature is forecasted to change greater than 30 degrees over a 24-hour period pouring of the base coat and top coat shall not occur. Installation of surfacing system shall occur when minimum ambient temperature is 40 degrees F and a maximum ambient temperature is 90 degrees F. Installation shall not occur in steady or heavy rain. 1.8 COORDINATION A. Coordinate installation of playground surface systems with installation of playground equipment specified in Section 11 68 10 if applicable. Special Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of playground surface system that fails in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period. 1. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following: a. Reduction in impact attenuation. b. Deterioration of surface and other materials beyond normal weathering. 2. Warranty Period: Ten (10) years from date of Substantial Completion. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. In Part 2 Article 2.3 where titles introduce lists, the following requirements apply to product selection: 1. Available Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, products specified. 2. Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide one of the products specified. 3. Basis-of-Design Product: The design for each product is based on the product named. Subject to compliance with requirements, provide either the named product or a comparable product by one of the other manufacturers specified. 2.2 CRUSHED STONE BASE A. Stone Base Course for Seamless Play Surface: Provide clean, washed, crushed stone base course material conforming to ASTM C 33 and gradation requirements of ASTM D 448 No. 67 as per below. AASHTO No. 67 Sieve Size Percent Passing 1 in (25 mm) 100 ¾” (19mm) 90 to 100 3/8 in (9.5 mm) 20 to 55 No. 4 (4.75 mm) 0 to 10 No. 8 (2.36 mm) 0 to 5 2.3 PLAY SURFACE A. Seamless Surface: Dual-density, poured-in-place system with wearing course over cushion course. Provide thickness for each layer as shown on the Plans, tested for impact attenuation according to ASTM F 1292 and for accessibility according to ASTM F 1951. 1. Products: a. Surface America Incorporated; Poured-in-Place (preferred). Child Safe Products, Inc.; Safety Surface. c. GameTime; GT Impax Poured. d. No Fault Industries, Inc.; SAF DEK. e. Or approved equivalent. 2. Flammability (ASTM D2859): Pass. 3. Tensile Strength (ASTM D412): 60 psi (413 kPa). 4. Tear Resistance (ASTM D624): 140%. 5. Water Permeability: 0.4 gal/yd2/second.Top Surface: EPDM rubber particles and polyurethane. 6. Base Material: Formulation of SBR particles and polyurethane, site mixed and applied. 7. Binder: Aliphatic Binder. Weather-resistant, UV-stabilized, flexible, non- hardening, 100 percent solids polyurethane complying with requirements of authorities having jurisdiction for nontoxic and low VOC content. 8. Critical Fall Height: Shall be determined by each piece of Play Equipment and their associated fall zones approved. 9. Overall Thickness: Within the safety zones, thickness must meet or exceed a Head Injury Criterion) HIC value of 800 for the highest critical height on equipment indicated above. All other areas outside of Safety Zones may meet the minimum required thickness. 10. Primer/Adhesive: Manufacturer's standard primer and weather-resistant, moisture-cured polyurethane adhesive suitable for unit, substrate, and location indicated. 11. Top Surface: Color mixes shall be as shown on the Plans using manufacturer’s standard color chart. 12. Filler/Sealant: Manufacturer's standard clear silicone or polyurethane filler/sealant suitable for exterior use. B. Leveling and Patching Material: Portland cement-based grout or epoxy- or polyurethane-based formulation suitable for exterior use and approved by playground surface system manufacturer. C. Provide products with the maximum recycled content possible. Minimum recycled content 20% 2.4 EDGE CONDITIONS A. Edging shall be concrete sidewalk or asphalt court pavement. Concrete sidewalk shall be haunched. 2.5 LEED Requirements 1. Wood products that are not reused, salvaged, or recycled must be certi- fied to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council. 2. Provide products manufactured and extracted within 100 miles of the project site whenever possible. General: Prepare substrates to receive surfacing products according to playground surface system manufacturer's written instructions. Verify that substrates are sound and without high spots, ridges, holes, and depressions. B. Subgrade: Provide sound surface free of laitance, efflorescence, curing compounds, and other contaminants incompatible with playground surface system. 1. Repair unsatisfactory surfaces and fill holes and depressions. 2. Subgrade shall be graded and compacted to a 95% Standard Proctor Compaction. C. Crushed Stone Base: The Contractor shall compact the stone base to 95% Standard Proctor Compaction. The base shall be graded to a tolerance of ¼” in 10 feet. The Contractor shall obtain approval from the Owner’s Representative prior to installing the playground surface system. 3.2 INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. General: Comply with playground surface system manufacturer's written installation instructions. Install playground surface system over area and in thickness indicated on the drawings. B. Review project plans and verify that equipment’s use zones, clearances, and reach ranges complies with ASTM F1487 and 1951 and with CAN/CSA-Z614 C. Install playground surfacing after the installation of the relocated play equipment. D. If the ambient air temperature is forecasted to fluctuate greater than 30 degrees in a 24 hour period, the Contractor shall halt pouring of the play surfacing until the fluctuation in ambient air temperature is less than 30 degrees. E. All edge conditions including sidewalks, curbs and other edging as indicated on the plans shall be installed prior to installation of play surface. 3.3 INSTALLATION OF SEAMLESS PLAYGROUND SURFACE SYSTEMS A. Seamless Surface: Mix and apply components of playground surface system according to manufacturer's written instructions. 1. Substrate Primer: Apply over prepared substrate at manufacturer's standard spreading rate for type of substrate. 2. Cushion Course: Spread evenly over primed substrate to form a uniform layer applied at manufacturer's standard spreading rate in one continuous operation, with a minimum of cold joints. 3. Intercoat Primer: Over cured cushion course, apply primer at manufacturer's standard spreading rate. 4. Finish surface to produce manufacturer's standard wearing- surface texture. 5. Edge Treatment: As indicated on drawings. 3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Testing Agency: Engage a qualified independent testing and inspecting agency to perform field tests and inspections and prepare test reports. B. Testing Services: Testing and inspecting of completed applications of playground surface system shall take place according to ASTM F 1292. C. Remove and replace applications of playground surface system where test results indicate that it does not comply with requirements. D. Additional testing and inspecting, at Contractor's expense, will be performed to determine compliance of replaced or additional work with requirements. 3.5 PROTECTION A. Seamless Systems: Contractor shall be responsible for protecting the play surfacing from any type of traffic over system for a minimum of 48 hours after installation.
