Hi Kelly,
In order to close out the final open OOC (SE 83-1454; attached) for 8 channel point we need to densely plant indigenous
species within 15’ of the top of the coastal bank; no maintained lawn within 15’ of the top of the bank. Kieran Healy was
at the last conservation hearing and he told me that the commission agreed that the area needs to be densely planted
with indigenous spcies within 15’ of where the top of the coastal bank was when the OOC was issued in 1990. The bank
has eroded slightly in some areas so that the bank is ~2’ closer to the house now than it was in 1990 when the OOC was
issued. Regardless, BSC will stake out the area that needs to be planted; 15’ from the top of the bank in 1990.
So I’ve met with the client and their landscaper to discuss planting indigenous vegetation along the top of the coastal
bank so that there is no maintained lawn within 15’ of the top of the bank from 1990. If you are facing the house from
the water, there is an area of ~975 sf (13’ x 75’) to the right of the pier that we need to fill with indigenous vegetation,
and there is an area of ~628 sf (13’ x 48’) to the left of the pier that we’ll need to fill in.
The client would like to fill in these areas with…
1. Beach plum – Prunus maritima
2. Sweet pepper bush – Clethra alnifolia
3. Bayberry – Myrica pensylvanica
1
4. Virginia rose – Rosa virginiana
5. Ink berry – Ilex glabra
The OOC did not require a specific planting plan it just states that the area within 15’ of the top of the coastal bank shall
be “Densely planted with indigenous species, and no maintained lawn within 15’ of the top of the bank”. The landscaper
is working to plan the number of each species and where spatially these plants will go but he is well aware the area
needs to be “densely planted with indigenous species”.
So as long as the area within 15’ of the top of the bank (from 1990) is densely planted with the above listed species then
we should be able to close out the OOC SE 83-1454 next year? Once the areas have been planted we will photograph
this and wait one growing season to ensure the plants establish themselves and then apply for the COC. Does this all
sound good to you? Just wanted your “OK” before the landscaper gets to work. Let me know, thank you Kelly!
Best,
