8th floor
Boston, MA
The purpose of the Site Observation Report is to record general observations of the work in progress at the time of the Architect’s visit.
WORK IN PROGRESS:
1) Underground plumbing work in Area C.
2) Underground electrical work in Area D link
3) Insulating and Backfilling foundations at Area C
4) Concrete placement at Area A
5) Setting forms and re-bar in preparation for future concrete placement at Area A
6) Ongoing survey and layout work
7) Fenagh is on site for 3rd party rebar inspections and compaction testing
FIELD OBSERVATIONS:
PE visited the site to review ongoing progress with the site work, underground utilities and foundation installation.
1. On Monday RBO completed subgrade prep for the elevator pit in Area B, as well as for the remainder of the
interior footings at the music wing area (Area A), and today was continuing to prepare interior footings subgrade
in the central part of B (specifically on line L on B17 to B21 and also on lines M and M.5). see photo. Also see
GPI report for more detail.
2. RBO is preparing subgrade for transformer pad (see photo).
3. UG plumbing and electrical work at area D is substantially complete, and RBO has loaded crushed stone into at
the Area D future slab on grade so that final preparations can be made for the subgrade for the slab (see photo)
4. Harold Bros. is currently trenching for underground plumbing at Area C (see photo).
5. Foundation insulation has been placed and walls backfilled at most of area C, including the courtyard and the C-D
links
6. In the early morning Marguerite placed the central foundation wall along the north side of Areas B and extending
into A—i.e. on line B12.3 up to line K, and on line K up to B1; they also placed concrete for knee wall footings at
the auditorium ‘lower bowl’ area (see photos).
7. Forms have already been set for the music wing south wall, and around to the auditorium (lines W/A.1). It was
sprinkling lightly at the time of observation, and Marguerite was in the process of tying rebar and setting forms for
interior column footings at Area A, and for the continuation of the foundation wall on line A2 (auditorium West).
8. PE had a discussion with Commodore about the extent of structural foundation wall detail 3/S201, which was not
dimensioned in plan on the drawings; PE provided a clarifying sketch and also walked Commodore through
clarifications that the design team provided on the loading dock area rebar shop drawings.
9. Commodore said that Marguerite protected the work that was placed today in preparation for expected rain.
10. Brennan is doing ongoing ‘as built’ surveying of anchor bolts for Norgate (area B).

FOOTING PREPARATION:
THE SEQUENCE OF PROCEDURES ARE IDENTICAL FOR ALL INSTANCES OF PREPARATION, AND ARE AS FOLLOWS:
Excavate to six inches below proposed Bottom of Footing Elevation
Compact the exposed subgrade, Piers now revealed – with a heavy vibratory plate compactor
Place six inches of 3/4” Crushed Stone upon the Prepared Subgrade
Compact said Crushed Stone
Crushed Stone Base now ready for Footing installation
Activity for Tuesday, August 31st, 2021 AREA “A “
Footing Subgrade Compaction / Preparation Detail :
The soil matrix encountered at subgrade elevation largely consists of uniform sands and fine sands with scant traces of
non‐plastic silt. Therefore, the proper in‐situ compaction of this material is largely dependent on the relative moisture
content of the soil. Since the encountered materials are of native, (natural) deposition the water content can vary from
location to location. Each situation must be evaluated to determine that the proper soil compaction techniques are
utilized vis‐à‐vis the moisture content of the soil. In other words, it may be necessary to moisten some areas with
supplied water in order to certify proper compaction in these circumstances.
