MONITORING REPORT -ANNUAL
November 4, 2021
Project Address: 4 Marsh Point
DEP File No: 83-2223
Date of Issuance: March 13, 2020
Report #: 2 (2021)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The scope of this project includes 11,620 square feet of vegetation management to remove invasive phragmites
(Phragmites australis) and any additional non-native, invasive, and aggressive plant species from the Bordering
Vegetated Wetland (BVW) and associated upland area. Removal of the invasive plant species will release the
existing native plant species and native seed bank to revegetate the project area.
ACTIVITIES TO DATE:
Spring - Fall 2020:
• Initial mowing of the phragmites and treatment of the invasives in the BVW and associated upland areas
was completed in May.
• Initial treatment of the phragmites occurred in July and follow-up treatment of phragmites occurred in
August and October.
Summer - Fall 2021:
• Follow-up treatment of phragmites and invasives in the BVW and associated upland areas occurred in July,
August, and September.
• Planting of native shrubs and swamp rose-mallow.
RESTORATION CONDITIONS:
During a site visit on November 3rd, we monitored the project area for the targeted invasive plant species
following the second season of management and the recolonization of the native species. Natives such as
seaside goldenrod, high-tide bush, swamp rose-mallow, rushes, jewelweed, salt marsh fleabane, and cattail are
some species colonizing the phragmites management area. The upland portion of the management area has
begun to re-vegetate with native grasses along with saplings of black cherry. The recently planted native shrubs
and swamp rose-mallow were all healthy as they enter dormancy into winter. No English ivy was found in the
upland invasive management area and only two very small stems of phragmites were observed. Any persistent
phragmites will be removed during follow-up management visits during the 2022 season.
2022 ANTICIPATED ACTIVITIES:
• Conduct follow-up treatment of invasive, non-native and aggressive plants as necessary to control the
targeted species.
• Seed any remaining bare soils with a native grass mix, as needed.
