Lisa, after reading what they are really into as shown below, I would agree to allow them to "keep up
the good work".
Richard
will call them now.

Good Morning Richard,
Thanks so much, I will replace the wood with wood, if it is small sections. Joan and I love the
house and we have been working on for the past ten years that we have owned it to bring back its
character. Any replacement will not be a "hodgepodge" of materials. Our intent is to leave the
facade the same with the 4 inch exposure clapboard. I have already spoken with a lumber yard
on the Cape and a local mill shop, near our permanent home in Lunenburg about their capacity to
mill some of the wider lumber that we are going to need to replicate what is there.
You and the Commission need not worry as a retired school superintendent, married to a history
major, the work will be done with care.
We are coming down today, if you wish, feel free to give me a call at 978-340-5781 and I will be
happy to speak to you about out plans.

This house dates back to 1820 and I think it should have wood repairs
done with wood. If they did use Hardi Plank it would have the same 4"
exposure (or whatever it is) and be done all over the front as opposed to
just where the wood is rotten. Work on the trim also should not be a hodge
podge of materials.
You might want to pass this onto Cindy for her thoughts.
Also, could you update the members list for 2022 please.
Thanks
Richard

Lisa,
Thanks so much for your help! We haven't been back to the Cape,
since I wrote to you, but we will be back tomorrow and I will drop
off a signed copy of the application with the check. I have
attached a copy of our request.
If there are any questions, please feel free to call me on my cell at
978-340-5781, or send me an email.
Thanks in advance for your help and I hope that Mr. Gegenwarth
approves our repair project.

Good morning,
As you can see from the email chain, I
forwarded your questions to the chair of the
OKH committee to get a ruling on how you
need to proceed with your projects.
He indicated you would need a Certificate of
Exemption (COE) for your work. I have
attached the form that needs to be
completed, and there is a $20.00 fee. For a
COE, you would submit the paperwork and
fee, and the OKH chair would review the
COE and the supporting documentation and
make a decision based on what you have
submitted. With a COE, you do not have to
bring your request before the OKH
committee at a hearing.
I hope this helps; please let me know if you
have any questions.
Best regards,
Lisa Sherman

424 is a beautiful house. In replacing trim
with Azek it should be done so as to match
existing and be painted white as per
manufacturer's spec.
If Hardie plank is used it should match
exposure of existing wood clapboard.
If all that is done it could be approved as a
COE.

replacing some of the trim on the house with

decaying. We are not sure of the number of
damaged clapboards, but if a large number,
we may replace the front with Hardie Board,
instead of wooden clapboard as it withstands
the Cape weather. There will be no color
changes and as the facade will remain white
with the black shutters. Do I need
permission of the Board, or is this just
considered "normal maintenance"?
