The Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) has converted this paper record to digital format as part of ongoing projects to scan
records of the Inventory of Historic Assets of the Commonwealth and National Register of Historic Places nominations for
Massachusetts. Efforts are ongoing and not all inventory or National Register records related to this resource may be available in
digital format at this time.
The MACRIS database and scanned files are highly dynamic; new information is added daily and both database records and
related scanned files may be updated as new information is incorporated into MHC files. Users should note that there may be a
considerable lag time between the receipt of new or updated records by MHC and the appearance of related information in
MACRIS. Users should also note that not all source materials for the MACRIS database are made available as scanned images.
Users may consult the records, files and maps available in MHC's public research area at its offices at the State Archives Building,

9. Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above)
Between 1858 and 1880, "Friends' Village", grew so that more
houses and roads connecting them had to be built. As Ear down as Crosby Street
things were stirring. One could of course go further in 1880 and arrive at
the lower village, but here near the center of life, the Quaker Meeting House,
there was most definitly limits to growth. The growth was small indeed but
present none—the—less. "Cat Alley", became ming Avenue and a chole new road
running from main to the river was constructed.
The house surveyed here_. lies on Main between Wing Avenue
and the other road already mentioned, now called Homer Avenue. In fact the
maxi, Isaiah Homer from whom the street gets its name, owned a large porti.nn
of the land in the surrounding area.
A previously surveyed house makes reference to the purchase
of property by George A. Loring from the said Isaiah Homer. In 1875 boring
sold some of this property, unused in the construction of his own home, to the
builder of this place, Manton H. Crowell. Shortly after, or at least before
1880, Crowell built his house and became the next door neighbor to G.H, Loring.
A short distance from his new home Manton Crowell went into
business with his brother Gideon T.. Together they took over Albert H. Bassetts'
blacksmith and wheelwright shop on Bridge Street. Eventually Manton acquired
the whole business and expanded into the shop next door after its owner John
Larkin died and left his shoe and hat trade unattended. Crowell converted
Larkin's shop into a carriage painting establishment of which reference was
made as late as 1915.
