YARMOUTH HISTORICAL. COMMISSION
March 29, 2010
Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Coleman
10 Hidden Brick Road
Hopkinton, MA 01748
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Coleman:
Thank you for appearing before the Commission last Tuesday to discuss your plans for
the buildings at 214 Pleasant Street, South Yarmouth, MA. The Historical Commission
appreciates your cooperation in reviewing the property for its potential historical,
architectural, or cultural significance to the Town of Yarmouth.
On Saturday, March 27, the Historical Commission members, along with your architect
and builder, met at the property and conducted a site visit. After examining the wide
plank flooring, wood paneling on the fireplace wails, hand-hewn ceiling beams, doors,
hardware, fireplace bricks, and windows of the oldest area of the house, the Commission
members unanimously voted that the property is a significant structure that enhances
the history, architecture, and culture of Yarmouth. In making that determination, the
Commission has begun the demolition delay process. The next step is a public hearing
to discuss the issue of whether the demolition would be detrimental.
Town ordinance requires that the legal ad for the hearing be published two times in The
Register. Since The Register is a weekly newspaper, the ads will run on April 8 and April
15. The hearing will be held on.Tuesday, April 20, at 3:00 pm in the Hearing Room at
Town Hall.
Based on the results of that meeting, the Commission will have 10 days in which to
notify you whether or not the demolition of the antique portion of the existing house
would be detrimental to the history, architecture, or culture of Yarmouth. If we find it to
be detrimental, the 60 -day demolition delay period will begin on the date the
determination is made.
At their March 27 meeting, the Commission also discussed your request to remove the
garage immediately. Based on the age of the garage and its location relative to the
antique section of the house, the Commission voted unanimously to allow the removal of
the garage at your convenience. Our only requirement is that you use care in removing
that section so that the structural integrity of the historic part of the house is preserved.
If you wish to begin removal of the garage, you will need to file a new application with
the Building Department for that section only.
With regards to the letter received today via email, it is my understanding that you may
want to use some of the historically significant features in the remodel of the existing
guest cottage. To help us with the writing of advertisements for the remaining material,
we ask that you give us a specific list of what and how much you think you might use.
(For example, wood paneling for a 10' x 12' room with 8' ceiling.) Upon receipt of more
specific information, the Commission will consider your request for removing the
specified material before the conclusion of the demolition delay period.
Should you have any questions regarding this letter or the demolition delay process,
please contact our Colleen McLaughlin, Office Administrator, at 508-398-2231 x1292 or
by email at cmclaughlin@varmouth,ma.us.
Sincerely,
Barbara M. Beeler Chairman

Dear Yarmouth Historic Commission,
Thank you for having us at your last meeting regarding our
application for the demolition of the home located at 214 Pleasant
Street in South Yarmouth. It was a pleasure meeting you all.
As we stated during the meeting, the old part of the existing house
does not fit into our plans for the property. We do realize however
that the wide plank flooring, old fireplace wood paneling, iron fireplace
accessories, hewn ceiling beams, door and hardware as well as
some windows are of value.
We are giving some consideration to using some of these parts from
the "old house" in the renovation of the existing guest cottage on the
property, lust not sure of the feasibility of this at the present time. We
would like to donate to the Yarmouth Historical Commission the items
not used in this renovation.
We would like permission to start removing the historically significant
items from the house as soon as possible to store them safely away
in case of vandalism, which could occur when attention is publicly
drawn to our property.
Also, we would like to ask if we could have permission to demolish in
the near future the other portions of the building including the garage,
which are not deemed of historical value.
We appreciate your consideration,
Sincerely,
J

Dear Yarmouth Historic Commission,
Thank you for considering our demolition permit for the home located at 214
Pleasant Street in South Yarmouth. We are truly sorry that we are not able attend
the public meeting on Tuesday, May 4"' at 3pm. We have both had other long-
standing appointments for this time and thought we had expressed this issue to
the committee a few weeks ago. Hopefully, our builder Rich Celeste and our
architect Sara Jane Porter can attend in our place.
We are currently reviewing two options with regards to the historically significant
portion of the existing home. The first option is to use the following list to
renovate the existing guest cottage on the property and/or for the construction of
a wine cellar in the new structure.
-Approx. 450 sq. ft. of wide pine flooring
-Fireplace accessories
-Fireplace paneling
-Front door
-Nine over six windows
-All hardware
Anything not used is as previously stated in our meeting can be available to the
Town of Yarmouth.
The second option is the sale of the structure to a Cape Cod gentleman who has
done these kinds of restorations in the past. He will be viewing the structure
within the next 10 to 14 days. We will keep you advised of the situation as soon
as we know.
We appreciate your consideration.
Sincerely,
Tom and Deborah Coleman

Hello, Deborah Coleman --
Thanks for letting me know your decision and I'm glad to hear all the materials will be reused.
Should you change your mind or wish to sell a portion of the materials (floor boards, doors,
paneled walls) I'd be interested on a per piece basis.
Thanks,

Hi David -
Sorry that it has taken me so long to get back to you but we needed to mull over your offer and
speak to our builder.
We have decided to keep the historically significant portions of the house for our own use.
If we change our mind about this matter we will certainly let you know.
Regards,
Deborah Coleman
Hello, Deborah Coleman --
I took a look at the house to be demolished on 214 Pleasant St. yesterday with your builder.
Although difficult to be sure, the frame and materials do appear to be bug damaged. I have
interest in the salvage and can guarantee the antique materials will be reused. I am prepared to
offer 1,000. for the salvage and will need approximately 1 week. I have workers compensation
and liability insurance and will provide certificates naming you and/or your builder. I am licensed
as a MA Construction Supervisor and well as having the MA Home Improvement license.
Thanks,
David Ottinger

Hl Barbara and Colleen, I found someone who is interested in the 214 Pleasant St
house. He is currently working on an historic structure in Chatham and has done
restorations on Nantucket and all over New England. His name is David Ottinger
and his email is davidottinger@hotmail,com. His phone number is 617-721-1728.
He plans to drive by it to look at the exterior. He's really interested so we need to
find the people who can get him into the house . Thanks. Carol
