HISTORICAL COMMITTEE
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mark Grylls, Building Commissioner
FROM: Beth Vozella, Yarmouth Historical Commission Office Administrator
DATE: May 1, 2017
SUBJECT: 170 Pleasant St., South Yarmouth: Demolition
On April 18, 2017, the Yarmouth Historical Commission received a demolition request for the main
house located at the above referenced address. In accordance with Chapter 92: Historical Properties, of
Yarmouth's Town Bylaws, on April 27 at 10:00am, the members conducted a site visit to determine
whether or not this structure is significant to the architectural, cultural, or historical heritage of Yarmouth.
The Commission would like to note that while the structure (which is in poor shape) is not significant,
there are elements that are very much worth salvaging, such as wide floorboards, door/cabinet hardware,
bricks and ceramic tiles. The owner's agent has assured the Commission members that the intent is to
salvage and incorporate as much as possible into the new home such as reconstituting some of the wide
floorboards to be used in the rebuild as window seating. The Commission is confident that this salvaging
will be done and they also support the rebuild plans that were presented.
Therefore, on Thursday April 27, 2017 with a quorum present, the Commission voted unanimously to
allow the demolition/rebuild of this structure to move forward.
