The Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) has converted this paper record to digital format as part of ongoing
projects to scan records of the Inventory of Historic Assets of the Commonwealth and National Register of Historic
Places nominations for Massachusetts. Efforts are ongoing and not all inventory or National Register records related to
this resource may be available in digital format at this time.
The MACRIS database and scanned files are highly dynamic; new information is added daily and both database
records and related scanned files may be updated as new information is incorporated into MMC files. Users should
note that there may be a considerable lag time between the receipt of new or updated records by MHC and the
appearance of related information in MACRIS. Users should also note that not all source materials for the MACRIS
database are made available as scanned images. Users may consult the records, files and maps available in MHC's
public research area at its offices at the State Archives Building, 220 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, open M -F, 9-5.

9. Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above)
Although the exact date and original spot from, which it came are not
known it is thought that this old red house was moved to its present site
sometime after the mid 19th century. The property on which it now sits
was owned, in 18581 by Joseph B. Honer and there is a house depicted on
the map of that _near. However, between that date and 1350 the Brown
family, represented by a Mrs. Brown on the Barnstable Atlas, acquired
the property and held on.
This Mrs. Brown was the wife of William Henry Brown who died in 1874 and
it is probably in this house that the couple raised their family. Their
children included William Jr., Allen, Alfred and John Picket
The last sore, John Pickett, seems to have been the one to inherit the
house from his widowed mother who in turn had obtained ownershiv via
William Henry's will. The will signed with a very shake hand gave the
wire, whom he obviously respected, full control of the estate.
Son John Pickett became :postmaster and harbormaster and it •ias during
his tenure that this house served as the post office for the Lower Villacr
Captain John ( for he was also the master of the tow boat "Blue Jay") died
in 1935, but his house, with all its numerous additions, continued as it
had for all of the last two centuries.
Where it came from, when and who moved it may never be known, but the
house has enough history at its present site to interest us.
