The proposed gas maintenance project is being conducted to improve customer reliability of local natural gas utility services. The project includes the replacement of approximately 315 linear feet of steel gas line with plastic gas line. The existing gas lines will be capped and abandoned in place and the replacement gas lines will be installed adjacent to the abandoned gas line. The utility maintenance activity will be located within the 100-foot buffer zone to coastal resources and Land Subject to Coastal Storm Flowage (LSCSF). The project will not impact wetland resource areas and all proposed work will occur within the roadway. Best Management Practices (BMPs) will be implemented during the proposed project, as needed (please see example BMPs attached). During construction, a 3±-foot wide trench will be excavated to install the gas line with the precise location of the trench and gas line determined in the field so that existing utility and drainage structures can be avoided. Work as proposed will be temporary in nature and following work, pre-existing conditions (e.g., grades, vegetation, and pavement) will be restored. According to the Wetlands Protection Act, activities conducted to maintain, repair or replace, but not substantially change or enlarge, an existing and lawfully located structure or facility used in the service of the public and used to provide electric or gas services are exempt from regulation under MGL 131, 40, provided said work utilizes the best practical measures to avoid or minimize impacts to wetland resource areas outside the footprint of said structure or facility (310 CMR 10.02(2)(a)(2)). Please refer to the attached Site Maps for the approximate project location and do not hesitate to contact me at 978-551-1156 if you have any questions or require further information.
