RE: Restroom Building Ceiling Finish
Tom,
It is our understanding Aquatic Development Group (ADG) was notified by the Town of Yarmouth
Building Department that the ceiling of the Restroom Building at the above referenced project requires a
Class C finish, per Table 803.11 of the 9th Edition Massachusetts State Building Code. The ceiling of the
Restroom Building as submitted for permitting is indicated in the construction documents to be exposed,
painted roof framing.
It is Dembling + Dembling Architects, P.C. (DDA) opinion that the exposed wood framing and sheathing
meet the requirements of a Class C finish. Per the 9th Edition Massachusetts State Building Code, the
definition of interior wall and ceiling finish is “The exposed interior surfaces of buildings, including but
not limited to: fixed or movable walls and partitions; toilet room privacy partitions; columns; ceilings;
and interior wainscotting; paneling or other finish applied structurally or for decoration, acoustical
correction, surface insulation, structural fire resistance or similar purposes, but not including trim.” In our
case, the wood truss and sheathing being the exposed interior surface at the ceiling.
Section 801.6 of the Code permits combustible materials to be used as finish for walls, ceilings, floors,
and other interior surfaces of buildings.
The exposed surface of the ceiling is comprised of 2x4/2x6 S-P-F No. 2 wood truss members and 5/8”
(19/32” nominal thickness) CDX plywood sheathing. I have attached documentation from the American
Wood Council (Flame Spread Performance of Wood Products Used for Interior Finish (2019)) and the APA
– The Engineered Wood Association (Flame Spread Index of APA Performance-Rated Wood Structural
Panels) showing these wood products having a Class C or better rating as tested in accordance with
ASTM E84.
