Reference Plan CEC Job#C129977 cia#1a COASTAL engineering co. December 27th, 2021, Project No. WHA 011.03 Board of Health Town of Yarmouth 1146 Route 28 South Yarmouth, MA 02664 Re: 2021 Annual Wastewater and Groundwater Quality Report South Yarmouth Shopping Plaza Long Pond Drive,South Yarmouth, MA Dear Board Members: Pursuant to the October 21, 1991 Yarmouth Board of Health decision relative to conditions set forth in granting a variance from "Sewage Disposal Permit Health Regulations" for the above referenced project, and has been since modified in a letter from Coastal Engineering Company Inc. dated December 6, 1995 to the Health Director, Bruce Murphy, Coastal Engineering Company, Inc. (CEC) has prepared the annual report for the above-referenced site. The annual report contains a locus plan, inspection reports, tracking of wastewater parameters, groundwater quality, summary tables, graphs, laboratory analyses, the Title 5 operation and maintenance logs, a monitoring and reporting letter, two groundwater contour plans and a sewage system location plan. The existing shopping center on the property is a mixed retail commercial use. Retail stores that occupy the main building in the plaza are the Dollar Tree Store and the Super Stop & Shop Supermarket. There is a vacant retail space next to Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness (gym establishment) and Habilitation Assistance Corporation (providing care for people with disabilities) are also part of the main building. The tenant Great Clips (hair cutting establishment) occupies the unit next to the Dollar Tree Store. There is a separate building near Route 28 that is _. occupied by Pizazz, a retail establishment that is part of the plaza. According to the Town of Yarmouth Water Department records, total water usage for the site was 2,357,000. This is more than the previous year's water usage of 1,371,000 gallons. The average daily water usage for the Super Stop & Shop and rental spaces was 6,493 gallons per day, assuming the plaza was open for 363 days during the year. There are four subsurface sewage disposal systems on site. One system is serving the Pizazz store, two systems that serve the 6 units in the main building, and one system that serves the Super Stop and Shop and two adjacent units. The first three sewage disposals systems are standard gravity feed Title 5 systems consisting of a septic tank, distribution box, and a soil absorption system. The sewage disposal system serving the Planet Fitness and two retail stores was upgraded in 2018. The Super Stop and Shop system has septic tanks, grease traps, a pump chamber, distribution boxes, and a soil absorption system. In addition to the Title 5 sewage disposal system, two Bioclere wastewater treatment units were installed in December of 1992. The Biocleres have been operating to provide secondary treatment of the septic tank effluent. An industrial waste holding tank in conjunction with a possible hairdresser for a vacant unit was installed in 2005 however has not been utilized. Refer to the enclosed sewage disposal layout plan showing the locations of the 4 systems. The two Bioclere units are configured in series with the first Bioclere unit acting as a roughing (reducing the strength of the wastewater- organic loading) filter and the second unit acting as a polishing (nitrification) unit. There is nitrogen reduction by recirculating a portion of the treated liquid back to the 260 Cranberry Highway,Orleans,MA 02653 Orleans I Sandwich I Nantucket 508.255.6511 I coastalengineeringcompany.com septic tank. No mechanical or electrical repairs were required throughout 2021. The Bioclere influent and effluent were sampled each quarter for wastewater quality. The parameters analyzed were Total Suspended Solids, BODS/CBODs, Oil 6 Grease, Nitrate-N, Ammonia-N and TKN. The Bioclere discharge characteristics were mostly below proposed target levels. The CBODs and TSS levels were below the target for samples this year. The effluent CBODs averaged 7.18 mg/L for the year. The effluent TSS levels averaged 11.08 mg/L for the year. The average Total Nitrogen levels from the test samples was above the 10 mg/L target value, but below the 25 mg/L level of treatment required by DEP in commercial applications with the average of the samples being 20.17 mg/L. This was more than the 2020 results of 12.11 mg/L. Oil 6 Grease effluent levels were well below the target level of 15 mg/L for both samples. A field inspection of the soil absorption system serving the Stop 6 Shop was made to determine its operating condition. Within the northern leaching galleries, there was 0 inches of standing liquid in both units. Within the southerly leaching galleries, there was 3 inches of standing liquid in the northern unit and 0 inches in the southern unit. Both distribution boxes were also inspected and found to be in good condition. The five groundwater monitoring wells at the site were gauged and sampled on 06/16/2021 and 11/21/2021. The enclosed plans show the groundwater contours for each sampling date. The groundwater flow direction is primarily in a westerly direction toward monitoring well DG-4. All five monitoring wells were tested semi-annually for Nitrate-N, Ammonia-N and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN). In both testing periods the monitor wells were found to have Total Nitrogen levels of 4.66 mg/L or less. The nitrogen levels are significantly below the drinking water standard of 10 mg/L for the wells. Summary tables of the results indicate nitrate levels have lessened and stabilized since the Bioclere installation. Upgradient well UG- 2 and downgradient well DG-4 were tested in November for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's). All parameters tested were found to be below reporting limits for VOC's. This year's test results again show that the Bioclere units continue to reduce organic loading and provide nitrogen removal from the Stop and Shop wastewater septic tank effluent. The low nitrogen levels found in the down gradient monitor wells also show Nitrogen attenuation even with the near maximum occupation of the plaza. The added benefit is the good condition of the leaching system after 32 years in use. The next quarterly testing period will be conducted in January 2022. Should you have any questions or comments regarding these findings or need additional information, please contact me at your convenience. Very truly yours, COASTAL ENGINEE• N John G. Schnaible, R.S.
