MONITORING REPORT -ANNUAL
September 13, 2022
Project Address: 4 Marsh Point
DEP File No: 83-2223
Date of Issuance: March 13, 2020
Report #: 3 (2022)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The scope of this project includes 11,620 square feet of vegetation management to remove invasive phragmites
(Phragmites australis) and any additional non-native, invasive, and aggressive plant species from the Bordering
Vegetated Wetland (BVW) and associated upland area. Removal of the invasive plant species will release the
existing native plant species and native seed bank to revegetate the project area.
ACTIVITIES TO DATE:
Spring - Fall 2020:
• Initial mowing of the phragmites and treatment of the invasives in the BVW and associated upland areas
was completed in May.
• Initial treatment of the phragmites occurred in July and follow-up treatment of phragmites occurred in
August and October.
Summer - Fall 2021:
• Follow-up treatment of phragmites and invasives in the BVW and associated upland areas occurred in July,
August, and September.
• Planting of native shrubs and swamp rose-mallow.
Summer - Fall 2022:
• Follow-up treatment of phragmites and invasives in the BVW and associated upland areas occurred in June
and September.
RESTORATION CONDITIONS:
During a site visit on September 8th, we monitored the project area for the targeted invasive plant species and
the recolonization of the native species. Natives such as seaside goldenrod, high-tide bush, wool grass, swamp
rose-mallow, rushes, jewelweed, salt marsh fleabane, glasswort and cattail are colonizing the phragmites
management area. The salt marsh beyond the project area also appeared very healthy. The upland portion of the
management area has begun to re-vegetate with a variety of native grasses like red fescue, broom sedge, crinkle
hair grass, and little bluestem. The recently planted native shrubs, were in good health. Very minimal English
ivy was found in the upland invasive management area and some phragmites re sprouts were observed. These
invasive and non-native were managed during a follow-up management visit on September 9th and any follow-up
visits later in the season.
2023 ANTICIPATED ACTIVITIES:
• Conduct follow-up treatment of invasive, non-native and aggressive plants as necessary to control the
targeted species.
• Seed any remaining bare soils with a native grass mix, as needed.
• Request a Certificate of Compliance with an on-going condition for continued management of the targeted
non-native and invasive plant species.
