Subject: Rezoning Petition for 33 - 37 Seaside Village OCT 11 2022
Road
YARMOUTH
BOARD OF APPEALS
To: Zoning Board of Appeals.
Good evening we are John and Candice Flaherty and we
live at 122 Seaview Ave which is at the intersection of
Parkwood and Seaview. We are writing this letter to
state our opposition to the proposed rezoning of 33-37
Seaside Village Road, Petition 49-79. We are both in our
70s, owned our home for 20 years and 14 years ago we
retired and moved here year-round. We have seven
young grandchildren that come and visit us on their
family vacations and for weekend excursions.
As a family, we would walk down Parkwood to Parker's
River Beach. Until this year, it was a very safe walk for
our grandkids who all love this beach and refer to it as
Swing Set Beach. They love climbing on the bars and
swinging on the swings. It was more of a family beach as
compared to Smugglers which always had a much
younger, party crowd. This past summer, it all changed
for the worse. The number of speeding cars driving up
and down Parkwood increased substantially. We bought
three signs that disappeared from our house that read
Slow Down, drive like your kids lived here. Where
Parkwood meets Shore Road, cars owned by workers
staying in the hotel were parked on both sides of the
road reducing visibility which made pedestrian traffic
treacherous. These parked cars were the same speeding
cars going up and down Parkwood. The drinking of
alcohol on the beach, with loud music blasting was
terrible.
After dinner we all would walk down to the Skipper for
an ice cream. This year, to the disappointment of the
kids we had to stop this tradition as it was too
dangerous to walk at dusk with the speeding cars.
This proposal not only affects the abutters of33-37
Seaside Village Road, but it extends all the way up
Seaview as well. I have an office that looks out on
Seaview and I see families with lots of little children all
summer long walking down Seaview and turning onto
Parkwood heading to Parker River Beach.
I sympathize with the resort owners needing places for
their workers to stay.On Route 28 there are numerous
vacant motels that can and should be turned into year
round employee housing. Let the owner of all these
properties turn them into year round residences and
preserve the residential atmosphere of our home. All of
the motels/resorts and restaurants on Shore Road are
closed for the winter so why is a year round zoning
change needed or is this just the first step of some long
term plan?
Please reject this proposal and suggest that other sites
on Route 28 be explored.
