BOARD OF APPEALS
My wife and I are long time residents at 163 Ocean Ave, in South Yarmouth and I write today in strong
opposition to Petition 4979.
Over the last forty years we have watched our neighborhood expand and revitalize as new and old
residents continue to invest and improve their homes along Ocean Avenue and Seaside Village Road.
The one exception has been the Village Green Motel on Seaside Village Road. Over the years it has
slowly deteriorated due to the lack of interested ownership but never as quickly or as badly as over this
past season.
The sham attempt to "improve the property" has instead become a neighborhood eyesore. Even the
exterior painting with its "multi-colored paint job" only further exemplifies the lack of interest in truly
improving the property.
But even more troublesome is the increase in speeding traffic on Ocean Avenue and Seaside Village
Road due to the many trips per day of the "Red Jacket Worker Shuttle" picking up and dropping off
workers at the motel.
This increase in speeding traffic is further aggravated by the workers improperly housed in the motel
speeding along the very busy pedestrian roads of Ocean Avenue and Seaside Village Road. It is only a
matter of time before a pedestrian walking to the beach is struck by a speeding car, van or truck with
the Town of Yarmouth likely being sued if this wholly inappropriate waiver is approved by the ZBA.
Additionally, it has clearly been demonstrated over this past season that the motel has become a"party
house" for the workers housed there. Gangs of workers congregate smoking, drinking, playing loud
music and on occasion verbally harassing passersby. There is no supervision on site and no vested
interest by the workers in maintaining the property and to act as "good neighbors"while they are here.
Both the police and fire departments have been called to the property a number of times over the last
season.
Finally, there is no financial gain for the town via increased taxes, etc but rather only increased expense
due to higher incidents of required police intervention and fire department calls.
We urge you to remember the original purpose of the Village Green was and should be as a motel(or at
the very most owner occupied condos). Please do not allow the damaging change proposed by the
requested petition to prevail.
