Town of Yarmouth Zoning Board of Appeals,
My family and I just purchased 54 Parkwood Road in South Yarmouth for
$1,3000,00, which closed on September 30. I have just been made aware of
plans Shore Side Properties has for the property at 33-37 Seaside Village Road,
and I am compelled to express my opinion and concern.
W purchased Parkwood so that we could enjoy beautiful summer days and
evenings with our children and young grandchildren, walking to the beach, the
playground and the Skipper Restaurant. The best part of summer for us is
being outside, playing in the yard, riding bikes in the quiet neighborhood and
enjoying camaraderie with the neighbors.
Had we known what the plans were for this rundown property in disarray, we
would have bought elsewhere. With all due respect to seasonal workers, we've
been informed that this summer was far from ideal and quiet, and dare I say,
safe. Smoking, drinking, drugs, verbal altercations requiring police response
and trash spewed about do not make for the summer memories we want to
create with our families.
The property has clearly been neglected and not maintained. How can it get
much worse, but pending approval, it seems clear that the management
company has no intention to improve the building, invest in bringing it back to
a lovely family motel that adds to the value, safety and beauty of our
neighborhood.
Of course seasonal workers deserve quality, safe housing, and the Cape's
commerce depends on them. This, however, is not the place to house them,
especially where it is a distance from the amenities that that need. This does
not belong in a quiet family neighborhood. There are many vacant, abandoned
buildings along Route 28 in Yarmouth that would serve the purpose of seasonal
housing in a much more adequate, useful way.
