The GC, Commodore, is in the process of procuring the two required fire extinguishers for these rooms, and they will be installed next week. The school staff who will teach in the rooms report that the range/ovens will be utilized for instruction on “life scope” or “basic life skills,” i.e. they will occasionally be used for cooking basic items including mac & cheese, pancakes, brownies, cakes and cookies. In order to allow exemption from the requirement for commercial kitchen hoods in NFPA 96, section 1.1.4 requires that the following four criteria be met: (1) Only residential equipment is being used. (2) Fire Extinguishers are located in all kitchen areas in accordance with NFPA 10 . . . (3) The facility is not an assembly occupancy. (4) The AHJ has approved the installation. The classrooms in question are in the area of the building that is an educational (E) occupancy. We trust that the uses of the range ovens will be as stated by the District and Staff per this memo. Therefore, once the fire extinguishers are installed, and pending your acceptance of this recommendation, it is our opinion that these spaces will be fully in compliance with the requirements of NFPA 96.
