This property was once the home of the Pawkunnawkut, of the South Sea
Indigenous Peoples who lived on the east and west of Bass River. The Town
during the Division of Common Lands in 1713, set aside 16o acres bordered
by Bass River, Station Avenue, Long Pond, and present day Pond and Crosby
Streets. This reservation divided up into ten lots and was dissolved by the
Town in January 1779.
Members of the Society of Friends accounted for leasing 95% of this property
in 999 — year leases. The Packet Landing area was represented as Lot number
Nine, which is where 331 Union Street now stands. Isaac Taylor was the first
leaser of Lot number Nine. In 1785 Taylor transferred the lease of this
property to Thomas Greenough a Nobscusset Indigenous person who was
born on the reservation. He in turn leased two acres on the north side by
Route 28 to David Killey in 1790. Greenough leased five acres, or the balance
of this property to David Killey in 1797.
The age of Union Street is one of the oldest in Friends Village. David Killey's
son Zeno built the Grapevine House (319 Union St.) in the year he got
married which was 1797. David Killey deeded all the property between and
including Union Street, Bridge Street, Old Main Street and Bass River to his
sons and sons-in-law in 1810.
The lot below Capt. Benjamin Tripp's house was owned by Zeno Killey and
his brother Seth, who combined all their assets by deed in 1808. Capt. Tripp
settled in South Yarmouth about 1793 and it is believed his original house at
327 Union Street was among the first to be built here ca.1797.
Charles Baker was a Cooper, and in 1841 Zeno Killey sells him the property
at 331 Union Street with the Cooper Shop already there. It is probable that
Charles Baker was leasing the Cooper shop for some time and estimate a
183o date on the building.
