Dear Sirs:
RECEIVED
MAY 0 9 2023
YARMOUTH
BOARD OF APPEALS
I am opposed to the planned go-kart racetrack at #228 Rte 28 in Yarmouth for the reasons listed below. -
On May 4th the applicant told me she expects the noise level of her go-cart track to be 70-75 decibels -- "like a lawn
mower." She described the sound of a go-kart racetrack as being "like a continuous lawnmower." She said there can
be 8 go-karts on the track at one time. She would like her racetrack to be able to stay open longer than just summertime --
unlike the other go-kart racetrack in Yarmouth (Bass River Sports)(next to the Stop & Shop). She hopes her racetrack
could be open 10-10 in summer and 3-7 or dark in the off-season.
Cape Cod's Beauty
What I treasure about Cape Cod is its natural beauty. Bird song is a beautiful thing. Shore birds and bats and frogs and
other wetland creatures need to hear each other in order to interact and think and thrive. So do people.
Yarmouth's History & Identity
The Yarmouth Zoning Bylaw says: "The Town of Yarmouth is an historic seaside village. Many of the attributes
associated with Old Cape Cod have been overlooked in the course of developing the town's business zones."
The Town of Yarmouth has a strong identity as a coastal community, directly linked to its natural resources. Natural
resources are a primary driver for Yarmouth's tourism economy.
The track_(with its noise and fumes) is too close to residential neighborhoods. Noise pollution is a health hazard. Many
studies have tied constant traffic noise to higher blood pressure, increased stress, and cardiac and mental health effects.
From my patio, I hear the seasonal weekend night music from The Cove Resort and occasional sirens. But thankfully,
they are intermittent, not like "a continuous lawnmower."
The track (with its noise and fumes and light pollution) is too close to fragile wetlands. The site is 1100 feet from the
estuary areas of The Cove, Mill Creek and Chase Brook. These marsh ecosystems are critical habitat for species of birds
and fish that are increasingly stressed and rare. The site abuts forested woodland. Light pollution can disrupt the habits of
animals such as birds and moths, and nocturnal mammals who rely on the daily cycles of light and darkness to regulate
their internal clock, navigate, and source food.
I don't think we need another go-kart racetrack in Yarmouth near residential neighborhoods. A racetrack is not like a
mini -golf course which is quiet, with soil and landscaping, more in keeping with CAPE COD's fragile natural
environment.
While Go-karts can be an alternative entertainment to hiking, running, swimming, fishing and biking in Yarmouth, it
should be in a more industrial area.
Thank you for your time.
Respectfully,
Marilyn Lucht, 481 Buck Island Rd 7E, West Yarmouth, MA 02673
