HomeMy WebLinkAbout5019 228 Route 28 Letter of Opposition 11481 Buck Island Road, Unit 15 B West Yarmouth, MA 02673 May 9, 2023 Dolores Fallon Office Administrator, Zoning Board of Appeals Town of Yarmouth 1146 Route 28, South Yarmouth, MA 02664 RE: PETITION 5019, Maria Curtis dba Lightning Speed Go Karts, Seeking Special Permit RECEIVED MAY 0 9 2023 YARMOUTH BOARD OF APPEALS I am an abutter to the above -captioned proposed go-kart track location, as a resident of Buck Island Village Condominiums. There are 117 condo units here housing 117 individuals and families, many of whom are retired elderly. Every resident I have spoken to VEHEMENTLY OPPOSES the above -referenced special permit per 301.2 from buffer trees requirement to install a seasonal go kart racetrack. This residential community ALREADY ENDURES a great deal of noise pollution from several directions. We are directly below a frequently utilized flight path from Barnstable Airport, which causes us to experience loud airplane engine noise emitted at low altitudes, directly overhead, many times a day on a daily basis, with increased incidents from Thursdays through Mondays in the summer months from early morning until late evening. In addition, we are located .9 (nine -tenths) of a mile from Yarmouth Police Headquarters, which means we experience frequent police siren noise, especially on busy weekends in the summer. We also are located .1 (one tenth) of a mile from the West Yarmouth Fire Station, which means we experience siren noise EVERY TIME an emergency vehicle is dispatched from this station, which is located directly across the street from our complex. In addition, we are located just over a mile from Cape Cod Hospital which means we experience very loud siren noise many times a day from multiple ambulances coming from all over the mid and lower Cape towns, all of which must approach the hospital via Route 28 or via Willow and Camp Streets which is a nearly constant nuisance. ALL OF THESE SOURCES OF NOISE are theoretically buffered from our property by many, many trees, with the exception of Route 28. Even so, the emergency response vehicle siren noise is very loud on three sides, and even louder as they travel behind us on Route 28. Finally, there is already a go kart track suitably located farther down on Route 28 in South Yarmouth, and another in the next town, South Dennis. A third one is obviously redundant, especially in a residential area that deserves a break on additional noise. I therefore find it to be irresponsible and unconscionable for the ZBA to grant the above captioned request for a special permit which will place an unacceptable, additional noise burden on our large residential community. I also adamantly oppose any permit which allows the petitioner to move forward subject to planting any amount of trees as a "buffer zone", which planting has already proven to be completely ineffective in actually buffering noise from the above -mentioned 4 sources which we currently endure. Go kart traffic will produce CONSTANT DAYTIME NOISE seasonally, many decibels ABOVE any and all the sirens and airplane engine noise we currently endure herf. Thank you in advance for your consideration and good judgement. Sincerely Marilyn Manter✓: 2
