Current Site Conditions
It is our observation that landward causeway plant material comprises typical coastal barren vegetation with Pitch and Scrub Pine, Scrub Oak and Eastern Red Cedar making up the primary
canopy vegetation, Bayberry, and Beach Plum round out the remaining population of woody plant material. The seaward road edge of the coastal bank nourished over the winter are showing
emerging Rugosa Rose and remnant Juniper. Nourished areas presently present a stable picture of what will likely last through the growing season without the impact of coastal storms
or severe weather events.
Nourishment Stabilization
We would look to secure for the near future the nourishment materials with the use of coir matting products. Our plan would be to utilize a 900- or 1000-gram coir matting locked in at
both the toe and top of bank with a lock in trench. Once either end of the matting has been secured along the face of the nourishment, we would further stabilize the area utilizing
no less than1”x1”x2’ oak stakes at 2’ intervals and driven to hold matting in place. Coir twine would be employed and attached to the stakes driven in further holding sediment in place.
Nourishment Planting
For such an area we would suggest that American Beachgrass be utilized to add stabilization, planted through the coir matting. Bare root beachgrass would be our selected planting type
planned for 2-3 culms per hole 12” on center. Current availability and time of year dictates that bare root Beachgrass installation occurs later winter/early spring, typically best
management practices call out March as the ideal planting window in which to install beachgrass (March 2024). In the upper flatter sections to the east, we would look to further stabilize
with vegetation that is suckering in habit by installing 1 to 3-gallon Eastern Bayberry, Carolina Rose, Groundsel Bush, (25) Plants 4’ to 8’ on center. All container plant material
would receive at installation natural rooting enhancement, compost, and water retention products.
