Dear Ms. DiRienzo,
The Conservation Committee recently approved the replacement and expansion of the deck at my home at 18 Roads End, South Yarmouth. In consideration for this approval, the Commission
requires that we take half of the waterfront lawn for planting a/k/a mitigation. This lawn area has been the backdrop of many family birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas Card pictures
since my in-laws first constructed the property in 1975. My wife’s mother designed the property with this area in mind as a safe place for her grandchildren to be by and enjoy the water.
Now that I have grandchildren of my own, I see the brilliance and necessity of her design. I would like to preserve this space that has been a gathering place for our family for almost
fifty years.
I understand and agree with the Conservation Committee’s goal in protecting Cape Cod’s fragile ecosystem. We plan on passing the house to the next generation and hope our grandchildren
can enjoy The Cape’s beautiful, unique environment for years to come.
With our joint objective of preserving The Cape in mind, I would like to propose an alternate solution to reducing our lawn and access to Long Pond. My family and I would like to provide
plantings for 500 square feet in a public wetland area of the Commission’s choosing. This alternative is close to three (3) times the space currently required for mitigation and would
be a benefit to the public, as you would use your knowledge and expertise to assist the Commission in choosing a location and plantings.
I look forward to hearing from you regarding this alternative. Thank you for your time.
